Making your own DIY canvas panels is easy and it doesn't take that much time. You can make them using your favorite canvas and to any size you want. I recommend using primed canvas because it saves a step.
There are a variety of substrates that you can use to make panels from. I like using Gessobord beacuse it's already sealed and I can just glue some canvas down to it.

AMPERSAND HARDBORD
1/8 Hardbord can be used to make canvas panels. It's recommended that you seal it first with acrylic gloss medium to create a barrier between the board and the canvas. amzn.to/48t8qag
11"x14" 1/8" FLAT AMPERSAND GESSOBORD
This hardbord is sealed with Archiva Seal and then primed with gesso. This is what most of my canvas panels are made from because I like how they're already sealed.
24"x30" 1 1/2" CRADLED AMPERSAND GESSOBORD
Cradled Gessobords are reinforced with birch plywood. The panel I used in the video was 1 1/2" thick but they're also available with a 2" depth.
Here's a link to a 24x30 cardled panel on Amazon amzn.to/48Q9G7g
GOLDEN GLOSS MEDIUM
Is a general purpose medium that's easy to brush on and it's what Golden recommends for sealing hardboard.

LIQUITEX GESSO
Acrylic gesso is used to prime various substrates such as paper, wood, and canvas. In this case I also used it as an adhesive to glue the muslin to the Gessobord. This technique allows you to prime and adhere the fabric in one step.

LIQUITEX FREESTYLE PADDLE BRUSHES
I keep finding uses for these paddle brushes. Since they don't have a long handle you can grip it closer to the bristles which allows you to press down easier. It's great for applying gesso to canvas or for painting large canvases
Here's a.link to the 3" brush but they're also available in different widths. amzn.to/3HeIOlp
GAC100
This is similar to the gloss medium but it has a much thinner consistency.

CANVAS
Most of the canvas that I used in this video was from this roll of primed canvas. It's about the right thickness for panels. amzn.to/3TXwe1s
MUSLIN
Muslin is a type of canvas but it's thinner than the regular canvas that you would use for stretching canvas. It also has a texture that's more subtle than canvas and has a less regular pattern. Here's a link to the muslin that I used in the video.

GATOR BOARD
Gator Board looks like foam board but it's much more rigid. These are good for making lightweight panels for painting outdoors, especially if you plan on doing a lot of hiking.
ALUMINUM PANELS
These panels have a polystyrene core with brushed aluminum on one side and smooth on the other. They're available in a variety of sizes. amzn.to/47uPxCo
SANDING BLOCK
I like this block because it's lightweight and it fits 1/4 sheet of sandpaper well. amzn.to/4aOKuQa
ADHESIVES
GOLDEN SOFT GEL
Soft gel is recommended because it's not quite as thick as regular gel so it's easier to smooth out. amzn.to/48Qx58f
POYWHEY VARNISH
I don't like using solvents and with some research I found this varnish which is made from whey which is a byproduct leftover from cheesemaking. It's low VOC and it dries to a gloss finish.

SILICONE MAT
I use this silicone mat to protect my desk from paint and glue. Thicker layers of paint will peel off of it, and thinner layers can be scrubbed off with warm water and dish soap.
SELF HEALING CUTTING MAT
This is the black cutting mat that has the white grid with measurements. I use this to protect my desk when I cut paper and trim down canvas panels.
LINECO
Lineco is often used for bookmaking and it can also be used for making canvas panels. It has a neutral pH. amzn.to/48pQRaY
PAPER MOD PODGE
Is another PVA based adhesive. The paper version of Mod Podge is acid free according to the manufacturers website. Here's a link to their website where it says paper Mod Podge is acid free: plaidonline.com/products/mod-...
You can purchase it on Amazon: amzn.to/4aRtWqz
BRAYER: This is the brayer that I use for smoothing out the canvas. This roller is 4" wide and it's made from rubber.
BLUE PLASTIC SQUEEGEE: these squeegees are used to apply tinting film to windows but I find that they work great for smoothing the lumps out of the canvas. This one has a black felt side, I found that both sides will work. amzn.to/3SdUc7m
