Recently there was a story about an IONIQ 5 owner who had run over something and possibly damaged his battery. After checking with dealerships and insurance company, it was discovered that the price of a new Hyundai IONIQ 5 battery from the dealer was $60,000 which was more than the price of a brand new car so the owner had to make an insurance claim and the insurer who is ICBC, a government insurance company we use here in British Columbia wrote the car off leaving not only the owner of this car with a bad taste in his mouth but many EV owners. The question - Does the battery really cost $60,000? Will all our insurance premiums rise because of ill handled cases like this? As an owner of the exact same car, here's my take on the whole $60,000 replacement EV battery story. One of the original stories can be viewed on the Motormouth KZitem channel. Check it out if you haven't and want to hear the whole story behind the battery debacle.
