Just got the Ultra 2. Apparently quite a different animal. My two low power mode tests showed 112 and 110 hours with Hiking Workout used both times for only 8 and 10 hour totals. Other than that, I used the watch for time, reading notifications, and one brief phone call each test. Full power mode with similar use reduced battery life to 65 or 66. hours. Apparently background heart monitoring and unknown activity require quite a bit of battery power.

I’d be interested in seeing how it does without the workout tracking. I have a 2nd gen SE and I don’t use much of the foreground features. When I go on business trips I leave it in low power, turn it off at night and get 3 days out of it. I’d love to see how long the Ultra could last under similar circumstances. Great video though Mark. My experience of hiking with my Ultra is that is the use of the altimeter on the hiking workout which absolutely kills the battery. I now use my Garmin Fenix to track altitude and only ever use the outdoor walk workout on the Apple Watch which does not use the altimeter.

I am well invested in the Apple 'ecosystem', owning an iMac, iPad, iPhone and older iPods. But I also own an Garmin Fenix 5 plus. If someone gave me an Apple Ultra watch, I would sell it and get a Garmin Fenix 7, not that I need the newest Garmin, but because the Ultra is a complete oversell for me. The Garmin accompanies me not only everyday, but also when I go overlanding on extended trips.

Great video! Not sure if it is the constant looking for cellular or wifi signal under the hood that has drained the battery a lot more than you expected. Good thing the chap with the Garmin can tell you where you went. :) I think for everyday use it's clearly a good watch but a watch for walkers it is not - never mind the marketing suggestion it would be good for expeditions. @@MarkEllisReviews I don’t agree! I loved how Apple implemented that! Giving users two steps of battery preserving. First you gain about 50% of more battery during workouts on GPS mode without losing any data! But with a few caveats like always on display turned off and less cellular use. Then you have the Low Power Mode AND Less GPS and Heart Rate readings, which give users much more battery life but with some costs… I would never use the second step option because of the data lost during the workout, but I really appreciate Apple giving us the first step without cutting data from my workout.

I think two days is not bad at all, considering what it does. Why is everyone so obsessed with getting more battery time? It takes less than an hour to get it back up to 95%. I simply don't see the issue here. The constant comparison to Garmin is a bit weird to me, as they are so different products. That said, the stopping of some of the tracking features could be because the watch comes off the wrist every ever so slightly now and then. This happens to me when I am wearing a jacket and cycling, the sleeve or gloves lift up the watch a little bit from the wrist. That IS a bit annoying and there should be a setting for this issue, like the water lock feature. So let's hope Apple figures one out. And perhaps some more general customizing in that area as well ( there might already be but I haven't figured them out). But then again I am not tracking and quantifying everything I do anyway. I mostly got it for the coolness and the fun features of daily life. ( like controlling the music when I teach dancing! which is ûber-cool!!) SOme of those ghost touch issues, they will for sure work out in a software update. They have with the iphone over the years. I do however get that your job is to do these "tests", MARK and kudos for taking the time so we can enjoy watching 👌🏼

I have a large version of the Watch 7 and can pretty much get 2 days out of it (with 6-8 hours of walking and sleeping in it too); I expected the Ultra to smash it out of the park, but on this performance, perhaps not! I share your sentiment regarding the touch sensitivity whilst walking - it’s a real PITA but I don’t want to lock it as it then won’t let me touch-pay for stuff. I still love the watch however and thanks for your review 👍

I feel like comparing the battery life between a Garmin device and an Apple Watch is really pointless. There’s no way (with present technology) to have the display quality in an Apple Watch while have the battery life of Garmin products. Even Garmin’s own OLED watch doesn’t live up to the battery life of their other offerings. Point being that there’s always trade offs with different approaches to technology and it doesn’t mean one is inherently worse than the other. And I’m saying all this as someone who’s used Garmin products for years but also use an Apple Watch.

@@MarkEllisReviews fair enough. I watched the whole video and did enjoy the issues you highlighted while using the watch like the “ghost touches” and the east misinputs from the action button.
