Love it. Got my wife the trek rail e-bike. Now we mtb the same trails. Never look back

I got one at the end of July, brand new, for $4K. It's obviously a leftover. I'm going to be 62 next month. I started riding mountain bikes in the hills of the LA basin/high dez in the early 90's, and I've been riding the mountains of Colorado since '98. This is my first e-assist bike. I have a Specialized 29-er acoustic as well. After decades of riding/working out, I got really burned out on it, so my riding dropped off. And, once that happens, it snowballs. That said, this e-assist bike put the fun back in it. I've put 500 trail miles on it in about 7 weeks. I live in Golden, so my trails are the foothill trails of the Rockies (nothing to sneeze at). I now do 3 rides a week of about 12-18 in 60 to 90 minute rides...usually averaging about 11mph. If I start feeling burned out on riding, my next ride I just put it on Tour+, and just smash the uphills and trails, riding about 4 - 6 mph faster pretty much everywhere. I gave my background and details for anyone who might have felt that similar burnout, and am the opinion now that I wish I would've gotten an e-assist mountain bike sooner. I wouldn't have dropped into that burnout time off I took.

Just bought this bike today & pick it up at my LBS on Friday. I wanted a certain color and to make sure that I and they had time to really dial it in... besides the fact that the weather will be epic next weekend (mid-80s after rain and snow today) w/ perfect trails in Nevada City, Auburn and Folsom Lake.

Would be cool if they could figure out a way to have it regen the batteries on a downhill coast, sort of how the Prius can when slowing down or breaking or however it works. Otherwise that's a cool bike. Bit pricey for me! But I like the assist instead of the full "don't have to pedal" eBikes. Cannondale rocks! But...I'm a Specialized guy and have been for over 20 years.

Eh, for us older guys (I'm going to be 62), those harder dirt bike get-offs aren't as "appealing" as they used to be. These e-assist bikes are a quick adrenaline fix while trying to stay in shape (much tougher at this age). And, I still have my dirt bike (KTM EXC with a Rekluse)...so it isn't one or the other, for me.

I was looking at getting ebikes for me and my wife. Specifically Giant or Specialized because our local bike shop sells those two brands. I held off because winter is just around the corner and I'm so glad I waited. This week the bike shop announced it's going out of business. They struggled through the pandemic shut down last Spring and now threats of another shut down in our area (New York State) was more than they wanted to deal with a second time. I would have spent quite a bit of money and had nowhere to get them serviced/repaired if needed.

That's unfortunate. Most bike shops were thriving because of the pandemic. The ones that struggled tended to not have enough inventory to ride through. Sad to hear though.

I know this is an old review, but I'm dreaming of ebikes! This is a great review. I only rented twice, a giant stance-2, but I'd say it's comparable. But they are badass, and by no means are you kicking back on these--i got up to half of a hill I'd never go up normally, and when I went to get off (too steep!), My leg gave out from exhaustion...but I didn't expect it... that's how cool it is, your adrenaline takes over and it's non-stop fun! Now, my dilemma is if I get one, it will be the end of my current non e mtb. It's a canondale from mid 90s and I do love it. Thanks!

JD, love this content. Please do a video of why you choose to ride mountain bikes instead of dirt bikes. I’ve wondered why folks choose one over the other, since they both can cost the same once you get the higher end mountain bikes. Thanks!

I'm looking to buy the same bike. What size did you get and how tall are you? Do you still have the bike? TI noticed that you had a velcro strap around your battery. Is this to keep the battery from popping out while riding? Are the batteries prone to popping out while riding over rough terrain? Thanks for the video.

How did you get such a nice stack of spacers under the stem (ie long tube)? I go look at bikes and with seat in appropriate extension I'm leaning over because there's only one or two spacers. Really annoying. did you swap out fork? (I realize 2020 vs 2024)

Since I know nothing about e-bikes, I’ll ask what might be a dumb question. Does/can the motor act as a generator when going downhill ? Kind of like a hybrid car? Too rich for me but the ebike does make sense for long distant riding. With that heavy of a bike , it would be very bad to run out of battery before your ride is over.

Walmart bike might do the same thing 1 or 2 times (maybe).... The 3rd time it will kill you when the stem comes loose or strips, the crank fails, the derailleur breaks or bends and the wheels fold while on a cliff. I have owned many Walmart bike growing up and I would never trust one going 25mph consistently.
