Another great show + wife. Seasons greetings. Just a side comment. When answering the questions, it is necessary to address the audience watching as well. It's an inclusive function. The persons asking the questions then feel involved with the answer as the rest of us would also feel. A little practise off camera can help make the project more comfortable and intimate. It is the same as giving a lecture, then responding to the audience at question time; you always face them so they feel involved. Have a great 2020.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you Felix, Stephanie and Warhawk! On Warhawk's question about SpaceX having 2 launch points for Starship it occurs to me, they will also have 2 landing pads pretty much lined up with each other. While the Super Heavy booster will have to land on a barge at sea when launched from KSC, it might be able to land at KSC when launched from Boca Chica. Just a thought, but we know that ground landings are easier to do than sea landings on a barge.

Why would someone choose a Falcon 9 over Starship? Think about it in that way: Starship - 2 landings Falcon Heavy - 3 landings Or if you want to launch more than one FH payload capacity: 1 Starship - 2 landings 2 Falcons Heavy - 6 landings So which one would you prefer?
@odysseusrex5908
4 жыл бұрын
The customer doesn't care about the landings. he only cares about putting his payload into the correct orbit. The Falcons are proven vehicles. Starship is not. As long as Starship ultimately performs as advertised, I'm sure SpaceX will have no trouble transitioning their customers over to it, but there will be some recalcitrant troglodytes who will require some coaxing.

Rocket Lab is still selling launches at 6 times the cost of Falcon 9 rideshare. Falcon Heavy is probably cheaper than New Glenn, but Blue Origin is still getting contracts. Cost is not the only factor. Starship will absorb most of the heavy launch market, but there is still room for smaller launch vehicles. The JCSAT Falcon 9 landed the booster at sea because the second stage went on a joyride after delivering its payload. I can imagine SpaceX developing this capability even more for Starship. You get on the bus on earth, Starship delivers the bus to LEO. Then the bus goes on and delivers all of the payloads to their various orbits. The next Starship might even take the bus back to earth for reuse. While this is a cool idea, not everyone wants to ride the bus even if it is cheaper than a taxi. Starship may replace Falcon 9 and definitely Falcon Heavy, but it won't replace the likes of Electron.

The EVA suit question is a very good, and underappreciated one. EVA suits are basically mini human-capable spacecraft. Sometime in the future, SpaceX will need to go EVA outside their own vehicles, if for nothing else, unforseen emergency situations. So they will need their own EVA suits. Buying suits from ILC DOVER is not cheap for NASA. I think the guesstimate used to be $10 million a suit. Obviously from a private space point of view, there is plenty of room for cost reduction here! If you ask NASA, they will tell you when you add humans to the Spaceflight equation, you just added 85% more work to your project timeline. The Environmental Control Systems on Spacecraft are not trivial, and they are more complicated than the systems required for commercial jet aircraft for example. For instance on ISS, they have a noisy mechanical fan system that blows the CO2 exhaled by astronauts away from their faces, no matter where you are inside the station. It is possible that ISS astronauts could asphyxiate themselves in the micro-g environment without such a fan system. The Heating Venting and Air-Conditioning system required for any crewed spacecraft complicate the problem significantly, and at least roughly double the development and manufacturing timeline. Add to that the high degree of recycling required in space for water recycling, air refreshening, and CO2 removal. This may be why Elon Musk was saying: "the best part, is no part" at his September update at Boca! But at some point, people trying to colonize Mars are not going to accept this do without, "Spartan philosophy". Skylab had a shower for instance, on ISS they have gone backwards to Zero-g sponge baths! Astronauts are trained to put up with it. Colonists might want a lot more comfort! If crewed SpaceX Starships are sent to Mars in pairs, attached to mile long Zylon webbing tethers, spinning at 1 revolution per minute, you greatly reduce Coriolis Effects on the human limbic system, they can be spun up to .38-g gravity levels, like Mars has, which presumably would help colonists acclimatize to their new environment before they get there. And Mars toilets will be very similar to ones we have on Earth! Adding any amount of gravity on 3 to 9 month long trips to Mars vastly simplifies the Environmental Closed-Loop Life Support Systems required. But to date, NASA has not ever even tried artificial gravity for humans! There is still so much work ahead!

4:23 "Would NASA allow private EVA's?" I think that depends on the mission type. If the mission is all SpaceX and this is not to happen at the ISS, they would not need to ask NASA at all. Imagine a SpaceX-only moon landing with Starship. Would they just land and take off again? Surely not! So I would bet that SpaceX is either already designing EVA suits, planning EVA suits or looking into aquiring readily available suits (if such already exist at all).
@fs2728

I would recommend them to concentrate on SuperHeavy first. If that works, it could be also used as the first stage of SLS, with ICPS/EUS and Orion on top of it. Maybe in an expandable version without fins and thrusters, and only as many engines as are needed for the mission. That would be cheaper, and it would be powerful enough to reach the lunar surface without the gateway.
@johntheux9238
4 жыл бұрын
Yes. Starship should be less expensive than falcon 9 to build. So the reusability is not even needed, or at least the reusability of the second stage. The most important thing for now is ramping up raptor production and building the launchpads.

A moon base would have no problem servicing the James Webb Telescope! Another reason in addition to a many others for a large scale moon base. Felix: Wonderful dialogue. Am watching this Christmas morning 5 am! In order to expand your audience it might be good to put up the definition of "SLS" and other acronyms. Otherwise you're only speaking to the choir. I'm a big fan of a dry erase board with a few defined terms hanging on the wall behind you. You can change it on the fly and people can pause the video if they need a longer look. Maybe have two prepared boards that change out during the talks. Time is of the essence in these presentations; therefor, don't waste that wall space behind you! Use it to help you communicate. Break a leg in 2020!

If Starship is capable of going to the moon, and on interplanetary voyages, it is perfectly capable of reaching the L2 point and servicing JWST. Now, of course, when JWST was designed, nobody was expecting Starship, so , unlike Hubble, it was not explicitly designed to be serviced. I bet it would still be possible though, given Starship's capabilities.
