Take two different steel billets, stack the two together or weld them, put them in the forge, and fold continuously to mix everything. The end result of this is Damascus steel. The process of annealing and etching is what reveals the patterns which come after heat-treating and some grinding.

Are you sure the patterns on the steel are laser engraving? Isn't it the "damascus process" making those? Cheers!
