Funny thing, (well, maybe not funny). I am old, just turned 65 three days ago. I had to change the ignition switch on my 71 Monte Carlo almost 8 years ago. Was frustrated, found this vid when it was freshly posted, and saved me a bunch of grief. Fast forward to today, the steel rod that goes from the key unit to the actual ignition switch way down on the column is binding up. Went to pull the key tumbler, and I had flat-out forgot about that little tab. (Beware you young dudes, I used to be sharp as you, lol). Searched YT, first result and as soon as I heard that voice, I remembered this entire video. So thank you again Sir, for a 2nd time! Gonna crack a beer now!

Just did a 1970, and you are 100% right. You saved my column, thanks for the sacrifice. It popped right out after I busted an access hole with a flat screwdriver and hammer. But the sliver of aluminum did get it kind of hung up at first. Thanks a ton

It worked! I have a ‘72 442 and after trying to find the button to depress, I realized there’s no hole. Took a long thin standard screwdriver and hit it with the heel of my hand exactly where video shows and it punched right through! Probably just a bad design in the casting process because the portion that punched out was very thin. Thanks again and God’s blessings

Your colorful language made me laugh so much that I listened to the vid a couple times just to hear the audio. Too many people nowadays have such thin skin they can't handle a few fucking F-bombs. I loved it. Anyway, I was sorting out some old parts I had in the shed and came across a "switch housing" from a '70 Monte Carlo that I used as a donor car for my '69 El Camino build decades ago. After carefully rinsing and cleaning out the mice shit from those fucking nasty little bastards that made a nest in the box I decided to sort the stuff. So I was putting all of the locks I saved into a bag and wanted to include the ignition lock cylinder and keys. After staring at that fucking thing for about an hour, digging out an old GM service manual from 1972 (that source showed the later design that didn't require any brute force), and still not seeing the cylinder release, I gave up and went to the interwebs. I came across your post and found that my housing was a virgin that needed its little cherry popped. I poked away at the little aluminum hymen and gained access to the cavity behind it and BOOM - cylinder out. Thanks for the funny and informative video. 🤣😆😂

Glad I ran across this. I must have bad luck with lock cylinders. I gotta change mine out on my 79 firebird and I just got a 70 Chevelle that doesn't even have one. Seems like they were having the same problem and they took a drill to it. Everything SEEMS to be out of the way fine so I can just throw another one in, but I'm not sure if they fucked something up or not.

I have been working on this on a 1969 Cadillac and the shop manual actually says to punch through that thing with a screwdriver to access the switch release, just like you did. I could not figure out where they were talking about, but then I figured out someone else had already done it because there was already a hole there (someone else had already done it on a 46 year old car, go figure!). Apparently it was designed to be done that way.
