A truck camper is any RV that can be carried on or in the bed of a pickup truck. The first type of RV is the Camper shell, the second is the slide-in camper. Especially in the 1960s, the slide in truck campers made up a substantial part of the RV market, but their popularity faded as other RVs emerged, especially conversion van-based Rvs. Those van-based Rvs soon took over the market. Van RV's offered more room and could be used for many other purposes. But the truck camper’s versatility remained unmatched as the slide in camper could be easily dismounted and leaving all the versatility of a conventional pickup truck.
I thought it might be fun and interesting to look at two Greenlight offerings of slide in campers, and the legendary pick up truck's that carried them. The 1967 Dodge Winnebago Camper and the 1968 Chevy C10 Silver Streak Camper.
First let’s look at the Silver Streak slide in camper mounted on a 1968 Chevy C10 pickup truck.
In 1968 Chevy offered for the first time a larger choice of engines including a 310 Horsepower V8 engine. The most obvious design changes for 1968 were a lower silhouette that helps road holding stability, better suspension both for strength and driver comfort, the cab design lets you see more of the road ahead with big windows including a big rear window. Side marker lights were added to the fenders providing better visibility at night. Other options offered were heavy-duty springs, high-capacity tires and front stabilizers. Except for the lower silhouette the 1968 Chevrolet C10 resembled its 1967 predecessor.
The Silver Streak Trailer Co. was founded in 1949 by Frank Pollito and Kenneth Neptune, two former McDonnell Douglas employees who applied their knowledge of aerospace construction techniques to the art of building state-of-the-art travel trailers. Silver Streak’s trailers were compared favorably to the better-known Airstreams. The Silver streak trailers had a similar silhouette as the airstream trailers. When the slide in camper craze took a part of the market away from travel trailers, Silver Streak recognized what was happening and started constructing slide in campers. Using the aerodynamic designs of their travel trailers they essentially shrunk their travel trailers to fit in the bed of a pickup truck.
This Silver Streak camper is 10.5 feet long and contains an over-cab 54-inch-wide bed. It also has a full kitchen with a stove and refrigerator. To finish the creature comforts off the camper has a combination toilet and shower. The Silver Streak slide in could be compared to a studio apartment. For its time it was roomy and spacious.
The second model of a slide in camper is a Winnebago mounted on a 1967 Dodge D100 pickup truck.
By changing some features of the D series, Dodge created the 2nd generation in the D series line of trucks. In mid-1965 changes in the D Series trucks included the use of 2 headlights instead of 4, a wider tailgate, and the replacement of the A-series engines with the updated LA series engines. The second generation ended in 1971 with the introduction of the third generation D series for 1972 model year. The third Generation ended in 1980 with the introduction of the Dodge RAM for the 1981 model year.
The Dodge D 100 series was tough, well built, had a good suspension, powerful 258 horsepower engine, and many other features that made the D100 truck ideal to carry a slide in camper. Especially a Winnebago. The Winnebago slide-in campers were roomy and featured all the trimmings of home for those great road trips.
[ A side note, Winnebago is actually the name of a Native American tribe “people of the dirty water.” They lived around Wisconsin’s Fox River, known for its very muddy water.]
Winnebago industries, like Silver Streak, found the slide in camper market eating into the market share of travel trailers so they countered and began building slide in camper models to compete. They built the slide in truck camper RV through the late 50's and 60's.
