Here is the desert town of your imagination. Surrounded by sand and only the most resilient of vegetation that can sustain endless hours of extreme heat and strong winds in the Mojave Desert, Barstow, CA is located in the middle of nowhere. Yet, the spot right on the axis Las Vegas - Los Angeles is strategically well chosen. The railroads rule: Four BNSF and Union Pacific subdivisions (Mojave, Cajon, Needles, Cima) connecting the west to the east and the south to the north terminate here. Barstow is an important crew change point on the BNSF Southern Transcon and it has a relatively large yard. All Los Angeles area and port bound traffic goes through here - up to 100 BNSF, UP, and Amtrak trains in 24 hours. This video is supposed to give an idea of this always busy railroad hot spot, which is one of the "hottest" in the entire country.
