@@Snwbordr2081 the wiring is a weak point. These had the old thunderbolt ignition systems that were sometimes an issue. If yours is like mine it a type 4 (IV) CD- Pointless- Coil per cylinder. Always start with a compression test and note that you should not have more than 20 psi difference between cylinders. These are great little motors and can last just make sure you replace the water pump impeller before trying to start it.

@LivetofishOutboardRepair

Your probably talking about the automatic choke Solenoid wire. This usually activates the choke when you push in the key as you turn over the engine. This primes the carb with gas. If this isn’t working try choking the carb manually.

Randy Johnson … The repair was simple enough. I just cut a section out into the side of the switchbox with a box cutter where the wires were coming out and used the box cutter to dig out around the connections in order to expose the soldered wire connections. I just heated the old connections with a soldering gun and soldered new wires in. Finally, I used a plastic epoxy to fill in what I removed and covered it with a plastic patch. It took some time and thought people would be board watching that part of the video. I just wanted to show it was possible to make the repair.

Very similar to the ol' girl I just got but mine's a 9.8 and I believe a '77 or '78. I'm curious, one of the wires on the CDI is a bit burnt up so I'm going to change the CDI for a new one, what could be a probable cause for the wire going to the bottom connection for the lower cylinder becoming burnt? Great video, I have the exact same motor. Been great for me. I had issues with it after my son ran it without oil (lost power in forward and seemed like only running on 1 cylinder. Anyway everything is fine but my buddy did a compression test and found that the switchbox is bad this only getting 1 cylinder worth of power. I was always able to get it started. I'd like to not pay $250 for a new CDI. Any suggestions outside of the video?
@LivetofishOutboardRepair

The only advice I can share is that if you see any corroded wires leading to or from the CDI box should be replaced. Maybe it’s just a bad connection. The wires coming from the Stator and trigger are assessable on the side of the CDI but it takes a little patience using a razor knife to cut away the rubber and plastic to expose the circuit board where the wires are soldered. Once exposed you can unsolder the old wires and re-solder new wires of the same gage. Just takes time. If your Son ran the motor without oil he may have scored the cylinder walls and pistons. Was compression even and above 100 psi? Also did he overheat the engine? If so he could have cooked the CDI and you’ll have to replace it.

Basically all I had to do is cut into the side of the CDI box with an razor knife to expose the wire connections and un-solder the existing wires and solder new wires in their place. G'day mate, I just got the same motor with a little trailer sailer I bought. The fella said he'd spent $499 on a service used it once next time wouldn't start. The mechanic told him it's a CDI unit and not worth spending the money to fix it. So he took $300 off the price and gave me the motor. It's got plenty of compression and looks pretty good inside. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Antipodean33 …. You can find a new power pack online at www.marineengine.com or you could try eBay. The only problem with my power pack was the corroded wiring. I was able to trace the wiring into the power pack and replace them by cutting into it and soldering in new wires. So, if you have no spark at all the problem is most likely the power-pack but I would check the coils, trigger and Stator before spending the money on a new power-pack. The problem may be something less expensive. I have a video that shows how to check the power pack-Stator and trigger - kzitem.info/news/bejne/qq6Fp5uDjqCjeX4 good luck!

I just used a box cutter razor knife to cut into the side of the CDI box exposing the connections where the two corroded wires connected into the box. I unsoldered the connections and replaced the wires. The kill switch should have two wires a black and an orange. @LivetofishOutboardRepair

@@korwinholcomb8981 if it starts with stating fluid that’s an indication that it’s a fuel delivery issue. I would start with the basics like making sure you don’t have any air leaks in the fuel line. Make sure your fuel is fresh at a ratio of 50:1 gas oil mix (2 -stroke). Does your primer bulb stay firm after a few squeezes? No fuel leaks. Check your fuel pump to make sure it’s working.
