Tibet's vocal style is called sprechgesang. It literally translates to "speak singing." This was a great overview of one of my favorite genres. This stuff frightens me from an aesthetic and "political" standpoint, but that's probably a good thing.

Death In June is easily one of my favourite bands, especially considering how diverse Pearce's discography is. I was introduced to him through some of his more post-punk influenced records. The Guilty Have No Pride was my introduction into his music, but As The Symbols Shatter is easily my favourite because of how immersive that album is.

Rome certainly has a way with words, "A Passage to Rhodesia" and "Le Ceneri Di Heliodoro" are definitely my top two favorites in that order. Also, Lauren O'Connell's cover songs album is another good one, of course many have probably heard her version of Warren Zevon's "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner" (I personally like it more than the original). I would also consider the Einar Selvik/ Ivar Bjornsson Skuggsja project Fusion Neofolk, brilliant stuff there, same with Aerial Ruin, kind of a Neofolk/ Doom fusion ("Dark Folk").

Great list! I feel as if a lot of people don't pay attention to the genre because it is technically simple and toned down, but I guess that's the catch - making something simple sound so timeless and evoke such specific feelings. However when you actually delve beyond the classics you realise how diverse the genre can be - it can be everything from jazz to punk infused.

I am really getting into neofolk these days. Current 93, Death In June, ROME, Of The Wand & The Moon and much more... Good analysis, felt academic. I tried extensively to get into full neofolk albums but got tired of them and David Tibet's voice as opposed to individual tracks. However, the closest to do it was Sol Invictus' Against The Modern World. Specific tracks such as Wolf Age/Axe Age and Lex Talionis have got me through some shit. With that said Wardruna's first three absolutely move the fuck out of me. Alongside Agalloch's The White but I gotta give it to the standout Enslaved track that started it all, Yggdrasil.

Very nice video, man! All of those are really great albums. I posted a 2-part video talking about neo folk on a different channel of mine, about 6 months ago, or something. The first record in this genre I've ever listened to was "Reaping the Fallen... The First Harvest" by Ordo Equilibrio from Sweden, old good Cold Meat Industry realese. All three albums of OE are great and every one differs from the other. Expect no singing, just a declamatiation or recitation of lyrics over the very simple and repetitive acoustic guitar riffs accompanied with very strong industrial and dark ambient samples (if you know Archon Satani, the previous death industrial project of Thomas Petterson, you know exactly what I'm writing about). Then after releasing three albums under the name of Ordo Equlibrio came a change of Thomas' female vocalist and also change of the name to Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio. In the beginning of the new project the style didn't change much but the sound was much more clear. The first four albums of ORE are fine but the album "O N A N I [Practice Makes Perfect]" was a game changer into the direction I don't really like and I quit following this band since then. For me personally all three albums of Ordo Equilibrio are peak of this neo/dark/apocalyptic folk and I don't care much about other artists in the genre because no other can offer me what OE can.

There's only one serious problem with this video. To Keep From Crying isn't the Comus album that's viewed as a precursor to neofolk, First Utterance is. TKFC is almost universally viewed as a lame sellout album lol. FU on the other hand is way darker and more experimental, one of the best albums of all time. C93 even did a cover of one of the tracks from it.
