This was an issue before i went to college in 1973, it was an issue when i went for my masters degree in 1984, it was an issue as long as i have lived near large colleges with a major Greek presence. It's going to continue to be a problem as long as these "brothers" think it's ok to give under age individuals, who have never had alcohol before a task to drink enough alcohol to turn a 50 year alcoholic drunk. I had people criticize me when i let my kids try a sip of wine or beer when they were 13, the time many kids start snitching wine coolers and beer from the family fridge. Then something harder when they were 16 which is an age kids get more serious about drinking in high school. I did this so they would know what alcohol feels like, so they would know what if felt like in a safe enviornment. They had been coming home with stories about classmates getting drunk and sick. I didn't want them to be one of those kids who got taken advantage of. They are both in their 30's, neither one drinks alcohol they "never learned to appreciate the bad aftertaste and hangover"..

Exhibit A: why being an oddball outcast to beneficial to one’s health. Not frat house related BUT: During my 3rd year of college(which was my 2nd year of college at San Francisco State University academic year of 2003-2004) there was the drinking “rite of passage” I had heard of via overhearing my underclassmen called, “21 for 21”, which meant upon you 21st Birthday, to commemorate being legally of age to drink alcohol, you take 21 shots of hard liquor (I cannot remember hearing the type of hard liquor) . I remember during that academic year I was living in the on-campus apartments, but was registered to take my meals at the nearby cafeteria (mostly visited by freshmen living in the dormitories I had resided in the year before) and one evening upon leaving that cafeteria after my dinner, I managed to witness a team of paramedics taking out from my old dorms on one of those patient carrying gurneys(sp?) a young man I could see to be in his early 20’s. I overheard from other students nearby that he had just turned 21 and he had partaken in the “21 for 21” shots challenge (this was the first I had heard of it and had not encountered this behavior before or since) with his friends beside him to ensure he completed the feat, to celebrate his birthday that day and as a result he had passed out and was unresponsive and that was why paramedics had been called in for him. A few days later, as I was walking to the cafeteria I happened to overhear some nearby students talking who were living in that same young man’s dorm building. Apparently, that same young man had suffered alcohol poisoning from that night and had passed away. Here I am, now at 38, and this incident is one of the memories of my college life that continues to stick with me to this day.

As an undergrad and graduate brother of a fraternity, the benefits depend on the type and what people look for. I think the most obvious and desired are a lifelong bond of brotherhood, networks, connections, and usually a much more…vibrant social environment, shall we say. Many a president, government official, successful businessperson, actor, athlete, or groundbreaking professional in one field or another has been associated with one organization or another (heck, 3 of our last 5 Vice Presidents are or have been members of a fraternity or sorority, as well as Bush Sr., Bush Jr., and Clinton). There are professional, academic, and service-oriented fraternities and sororities as well, so no, not all orgs are just party houses; unfortunately, too many very much are.

So everyone who attends frat parties dies? My boyfriend was in a fraternity and they took people to the hospital if there was any worry of drinking too much. They called Ubers for people. They made sure no one was using the bedrooms or bathrooms for bad things or passing out drunk in them and being forgotten. Not all fraternities are bad.

Your absolutely right. She let her underage kid go drink at a frat house. What does she think goes on at frat parties?
