Cool ideas. Number eight could be; get your backup strategy configured. It will save you for many tears later 🙂

Thanks Robbie-great ideas and your intent to help others brings me here almost everyday. I started the folding at home after watching it here and now I’m going to start down the other six ideas in your list. Here in Michigan, USA, it’s crazy time, so I hope you and yours are safe.

Loved it! Thanks, tons of ideas. Any chance of a video about tackling some of the more complex things a NAS can do. I've got a Synology NAS and there are things like Mailplus and Webstation which I can't set up? Cheers

I think every week you should report at least 7 Great Things you can do with a NAS because it seems it's a shit load of things a NAS can do that we aren't thinking out the box that it can do. Some of the ones you mentioned were interesting like the Podcast one, Folding at Home, The Surveillance one. Just imagine being able to turn a Surveillance recording into a TV Show of some kind. Maybe someone recording their big Aquarium as a live feed to their NAS and streaming it live as an idea. The fun thing is there seem to be lots of things a NAS Home user can do that we aren't necessarily thinking of out of the box. That can be fun. Make a podcast of your daily thoughts to your NAS and stream it, you never know who listens to it.

Good video, I have been doing doing some of your tips already (sorting photos, transferring DVDs and folding@home). Great to see some of the other ideas. Particularly thinking about upgrading my surveillance, My current NAS is a DS1517+ running raid5 on 5x10TB Ironwolf drives. With a separate NVR (with single 6TB Dive) running 6 cameras at 4K. Thinking about adding a DX517 and some nighthawk drives, or getting a separate 2 bay NAS to replace the current NVR. Pondering the pros and cons of both solutions.

I want to get started with a NAS. the purposes are for multimedia/movies, and as a retro gaming machine, and Linux VM machine. what kind of Nas should I get? a 4 bay or an 8 bay? I heard some people say it's better to buy a larger capacity to allow room for growth.

I'm torn between getting a 4 bay Synology/QNAP NAS or build a FreeNAS system. Roughly $1k budget. Most likely 2 - 8TB drives to start, with 2 bays available for future expansion/redundancy. Thoughts ?

I suppose my question would be when setting up and hoping not to waste drive space and function. Would videos like the following exist? I was looking for more videos or anecdotal stories of trial and error pitfalls that people found to be best practices in situations where they wasted drive space for the raid/pool storage/ or value . . . or had to move data then delete it(and re setting up nas pools/volumes), by looking back after they set up when learning and gaining experience with missteps/underestimating storage setups. I was hoping the creator . .or anyone scanning video/this thread might chime if they see this thread.

Not fun things to do with your NAS. Put in a new Western Digital Red drive, attempting to rebuild your array, and running into problems because they submarined SMR drives into the Red line.

No surprise. Yes, waste your time when you should be working on updating your skills so you don’t get side lined next time: How about learning a new spoken or programming language, learn to program in Unix shell or make your own rsync commands to achieve better backups and temporary retention of the data that gets deleted as backups run??
