Hey everyone, thanks for watching! I just want to clarify something. A lot of people seem to have a misconception about this video, I'm not trying to teach you the 7 BEST tips to improve in Don't Starve, just 7 tips to help get you started. This video is meant to help players who have just started the game get a handle on things. There are better methods of getting stuff than in this video, however this is the simplest for new players. KZitem is chalked full with guides that show you how to min-max every little thing in the game. I just wanted to make something simple to get people off on the right foot. By all means, watch the other guides once you feel comfortable with the game, they can teach you a lot more than I can. Have fun, I hope you enjoy the game!

This game is more about knowledge than skills, though. Sometimes you need to manage a combination of bad situations but most of the time there is an easy way out you simply don't know about yet. Simple example : Torches are most likely the first light source you will encounter, but you shouldn't have to make more than a few torches in the first year. A good tip is to spend your first nights near a lone tree that you set on fire (the tree should be far away from bushes and shrooms as the fire would spread to those too. Free light and some coal to harvest in the morning. Don't forget to unequip your torch while the tree is burning. Once you've made your first science machine and you have plenty of coal, you can eliminate the need for torches by making a miner hat or lantern. You will need to go to the caves but light bulbs are an easy grab. Once you get a fridge, you can even keep your light bulbs in there and not worry about light for half the season.

Two tips I always give to people, new or veteran, is to carry seeds on you at all times. Not only will they come in handy when you finally get a farm set up or are playing as Wickerbottom, or Wormwood for easy sanity restoration, they last for ages and are easily acquired via birds. This makes them a great Emergency food for if you're out exploring the world and run out of meatballs and have wandered too far from home. Another tip is that I set up a flower garden in my base to spawn butterflies, butterflies make *exquisite* filler for Meatballs and are the healing potato chip of Don't Starve.They feed you and give 8 HP a pop! Not to mention they are a decent way to spawn Krampus, collect Souls (if you're playing as the new Don't Starve Together character Wortox) and farm for the ever elusive Butter. Granted this farm will not work in Winter but that's where ice comes into play or any reserve berries you haven't yet picked from your bushes yet. 3 out of 4 times of the year the farm will always be up and spawning butterflies.

Destiny McIntire Seeds are horrible in this game unless playing Wicker or Wormwood. They are a pretty bad emergency food since they only restore 4.7 hunger regardless if they are cooked or not, you're way better just picking some carrots or berries from the wild along your travel. Farms are also a big waste of resources since they hardly provide anything that can't be aquired otherwise more easily (cactus flesh has a vegetable value in crock pot), with the only exception maybe being dragonpie, but at this point you'll need so many farms that the time and resources would be way better used in making a bunnyman farm. Same goes for the butterfly farm. They are a good food source to pick up along a travel, but not nearly good enough to dedicate an entire farm to them. You would be way better off just setting up a berrybush farm for meatball fillers, and if you want food that easily restores Hp, base in the dragonfly desert and farm hounds for monster meat/eggs and cactus flesh to make pierogies. I know this comment is quite old, but i still wanted to talk about it since new players might pick these points up as actual good things to do, which they actually are not. Edit: typos

@@akazumiii9281 I agree that seeds are bad(unless you really want that dragonfruit), but butterfly farms are useful, have 20-30 flowers and that's enough, easy health and filler while still having berry bush farms and other stuff.

Here's some tips as a fairly new player that I have found useful: 1. Pick many flowers. Not only does merely picking flowers restore some sanity, can be used to craft a flower crowns, but the excess can be left to rot. Rot can act a great fertilizer for plants and I personally find it easier to obtain in abundance than collecting individual manure piles. Petal can also restore small points of health. 2. Cooked green mushrooms also restore sanity but at the cost of some health. Digging up a mushroom will yield two but may not spawn again. 3. Set ponds on fire to collect ash. While the small tuffs of grass that grow around ponds are usually not interactive, they are flammable and can yield 3-4 ash. This is handy if you don't want to set resources like grass and saplings on fire. Tree stumps can also drop ash but if dug up with a shovel, can drop a single piece of wood. 4. You can bait spiders into traps to avoid combat all together. 5. I was told you won't get a morsel every time if you murder a rabbit? Selecting the rabbit, hovering it over the fire, and pretty much cooking it alive will yield a morsel every time. 6. Bases are best located by roads, away from the coast if you find the penguins that spawn in winter annoying, and void of any other mob on screen. This is to avoid the beefalo when they go into heats, and pigmen when they transform during the full moon. 7. 10 saplings, 10 grass, and 20 berry bushes is usually a great starting point for a beginning base. Make sure to place lightning rods to avoid your hard work going up in flames due to lightning strikes (lost my saplings this way rip).
@vincentwei9869
5 жыл бұрын
Bases are best located at the centre of activity ie relatively close to pig king, desert and swamp being the best combo. Pig king is least important, desert is most. They don't need to be next to roads, especially since they can be made. Do not pick flowers. Butterflies are an amazing source of food and health. Flowers will also be needed later for bee hives, one of the best food sources in the whole game.
@SuperSox97
5 жыл бұрын
As mentioned above, picking flowers is generally not a good idea unless you REALLY need that sanity. Butterflies are just generally more important. Cooked green caps take away 1 health for 15 sanity, so the health cost isn't really worth thinking about unless you're super low health (which is when you can eat raw blue caps to restore health at the cost of sanity). I would say traps aren't worth using on normal spiders. Normal spiders are only a threat in huge numbers, and you should run, not fight, if you're against a large group. Traps are a great way to get rid of spider warriors, though. In Don't Starve Together, when breaking down a tier 3 spider den, even if you properly lure out all the spiders you can, there will always be a spider warrior that comes out when you finally hit the den. A single trap is a quick way to get rid of it without fighting. You always get a morsel when you murder a rabbit unless it's a beardling. Your trick is applicable for birds since birds can drop feathers or morsels but will always drop a cooked morsel if cooked alive.

Well yes but what I call myself a “good player” I would say picking flowers are only good for sanity sadly there better on the ground because of butter flies a butter fly + a carrot and 2 twigs “or fillers” makes a meal worth 37.5 hunger 20 of thy hp and 5 sanity. It is easy to make but you need a crockpot and well carrots. But yes I would agree with most I agree with the first half of number 6 and the Beefalo but not the pigs, they only last for a whole full moon only and they always drop 2 meat and 1 pig butt but using 1 pig butt walls can keep them out forever and when there were pigs then you can try to kill them because all of them won’t attack and there dodging pattern is easy if you have a good weapon. So yes I agree and no at the same time. And yes I have a good idea for don’t starve not don’t starve together (unless smaller) the oven. Stone walls around either grass walls or any flammable ground block. Get a mob in there (bigger ones take longer to cook) and heat up the oven! They will die of fire and you can get noice cooked meat :D. I hope this has helped you all!

For the last tip: When cosidering taking the reeds, especially if you don't want to really get them all and risk taking a few tentacle hits midway, you should consider how much you need them, by example, if you need an birdcage, which is a big deal for any base with crockpots or pig king nearby, requires 2 papyrus, so 8 reeds is enough, any more of them would be for character-specific items or just shadow armor. I want to mention the Bunnymen as it is an better option for war against spiders, but for new players, take what you can learn at the surface first.

If you're going to kill pigs, I would highly recommend turning them into werepigs. Pigs drop either a meat or a pig skin when killed. If you feed them 4 monster meat, they turn into werepigs which drop 2 meat AND a pig skin when killed. Ham bats cost 2 meat, a pig skin, and a few twigs, so 1 werepig is basically equal to a ham bat. Werepigs also work as a great source of manure. Drop a bunch of berries/petals/light bulbs on the ground and then transform a pig into a werepig. It will eat and drop 1 manure for each item eaten.

Good video! I've also found a lot of tips are geared towards people who are already relative experts at the game (and, as a relative expert myself, this suits my purposes fine, but I still fondly remember when surviving the first hound attack was a major accomplishment). I will add on a tip regarding light sources in general that's hopefully not too min-maxy, if that's okay: Campfires are generally worth building (and I recommend always having one pre-built), but making one every night until you find a base location is a drain on resources and time. Instead, make torches! They cost less, the resources to make them take less time to get, and you can spend your nights continuing to explore the map. You might hear spiders and other things yell at you in the darkness, and that can be pretty scary, but as long as you keep running, nothing will catch up to you long enough to hurt you. You can even light trees and other things on fire to extend your light radius, if it makes you feel safer (just be careful that you don't cause a major fire unless you mean to). I always keep two torches on hand, just in case.

It's kinda funny seeing someone who doesn't know much about the game trying to give out tips and advice. A lot of this info is pretty obvious unless you've JUST started playing, but I had no idea that there was a fruit medley and how easy it was to make, so that was actually pretty useful to know. It was funny yet worrying when you were literally fighting a REGULAR pig when talking about how they drop pigskin, because there's literally no reason not to just feed a pig 4 monster meat and then kill the werepig, which is EASIER to fight, for a total of guaranteed 2 meat and 1 pigskin every time. Also monster meat is incredibly easy to get if you're competent in fighting spiders, hounds, and even batalisks sometimes drop some. And if you turn a pig into a werepig before killing it, no other pigs join in and try to help him out! And the other thing that was funny yet worrying to see was when you were talking about how you can lead the spiders off the nest and kill them at a safe distance, but you didn't get to a safe distance in your clip. If the nests would have even been tier 2 nests then you would've gotten OBLITERATED with spider warriors standing that close. However, it is actually a good idea to get all 3 spiders out of the tier 1 nest to kill them all fast, since only 3 spiders is an insanely easy battle, you really shouldn't ever get hit when fighting just 3 spiders at a time.

TosTas Press F to attack most hostile mobs, while pressing Ctrl + F at the same time will forcefully make yourself attack any nearby mobs (e.g. butterflies) Ctrl + F can also be used when you don’t have anything in hand to attack with, though this is not really recommended because it’s merely a fist attack that deals only 10 damage and has slow attack rate.

Hammer Pig houses instead of chopping trees earlygame once you have a science machine pre-crafted. This saves you a lot of time from chopping trees. pre-craft an alchemy engine and don't place it until you find a good base location. instead of using a campfire, just use a torch. a torch has more than enough durability to last the first few nights, and set trees that are away from other objects on fire for stationary light. for koalefants, instead of letting it live for manure to fertilize farms, kill it for a lot of meat and a koalefant trunk. farms are a very slow and inefficient food source, and you're better off just making meatballs with berries and meat.

Only thing makes this game challenging bad keyboard controls forced by game.. If you are trying to fight with "F" key it will get tiresome quickly. Gaming mouse really helps :P But makes game less challenging. Even cheap gaming mouse with software will do trick. It can rapidly spam F for you.. while you are focusing screen, dodging big bosses. You can also assign special keys for cane, weapon and quickly switch for faster movement in combat. But I can see why developers made bad keyboard controls after gaming mouse game kinda.. boring.

Random Tips: Don't bother farming winter gear. Any chest winter gear is awful as it takes backpack slot, and one of the highest insulating gear can be easily obtained from killing the walrus (the tam o shanter, can also restore sanity 5 times better than the stupid garland). Don't you dare pick flowers. They are a source of one of the easiets food sources in the game, butterflies. Just quickly approach when they are chilling in the flower and they will net you 10 hunger and 10 health. Just punch them by force attacking. Additionally, they will be needed later for bee hives. Additionally, garlands are useless because being max sanity is unnecessary, and in early game sanity can easily be restored by prototyping (15 sanity for each new invention). A desert (dst only i think) is a very good friend. it has tumbleweeds, yielding twigs, straw, gears and gold (from items that can be given to pig king) + cacti!!!!! Cacti need to be picked with armor to avoid taking brunt of dmg, but can be used to make op pierogi (which restores 40 hunger + 40 health using one meat, one egg, one ice and one vegetable ie cacti) or can be also be eaten directly to restore hunger and sanity. Rock turf can be dug to yield material to build the equivalent of roads, boosting base movement speed. ROcky turf comes from rock biomes (the ones with shitton of gold rocks and spiders). If u can deal with the insanity effects (which I personally can't, not very enjoyable), being insane is better than being sane. Insanity is relatively low risk if you bother with proper gear and can net nightmare fuel, one of the most powerful items in the game (ie one of the best armor and weapon, magilumniscence etc. Don't bother with farms until (at the earliest) summer of second year. Dragonfruit is amazing, but not so amazing to waste most of early game trying to obtain. Burn one of the stupid spider forests down for infinite charcoal, which is needed for crockpots (16-24 for four of them) and drying racks, which make incredible, long lasting food in jerky.
@mkx27e

These are good tips! Adding on: All you really need to make for the first winter is a thermal stone. Keep it warm and that should make your life easier while you go kill Mactusk to get the Tam (maybe build a fire pit near him, especially if it takes several attempts before you get a Tam/Walking Cane. But after you kill Bearger in your second autumn, the Hibearnation Vest is also worth it even though it takes up your chest slot, since it provides more insulation than the Tam, AND slows down your hunger loss. Deserts also appear in Reign of Giants. Also of note is that Tumbleweeds can spawn gears, which are otherwise hard to come by. In Reign of Giants, you can find tumbleweed spawn points by hovering a pre-built structure around the desert until you find a place where you should be able to build, but can't - and then build walls surrounding it. (This doesn't work in DST; I think you'd have to just build a whole bunch of walls probably criss-crossing the desert, and figure out the spawn points via process of elimination). This makes tumbleweed harvesting much less time-consuming than walking around the edge of the desert. You can farm Dragonfruit fairly easily by building a bird cage with 2 papyrus (8 reeds), some gold (I think 6), and two bird seeds. Then catch a bird with a bird trap (4 silk and I think 4 twigs) and stick it inside. Feeding Dragonfruit to the bird will cause it to drop 1-2 Dragonfruit seeds, which will always grow into more Dragonfruit. You can put one Dragonfruit in a crockpot with three twigs and get Dragonpies, which restore 40 health as well as some hunger and sanity. It's one of the best healing items in the game, but I still wouldn't bother farming until at least spring - if ever. I'd still put up that birdcage, though - you can feed it meat (except raw monster meat - cook those!) in exchange for eggs, allowing you to make Bacon and Eggs and Pierogi. You can even feed your bird stale/spoiled eggs to get fresh eggs back!

Tip No# 4 @ 1:26 is pretty noobish rather than an improvement. Make a torch and run through the night exploring and gathering rather than standing at a campfire singing Kumbaya my lordy and wasting time. Fires are expensive, wasteful and often unnecessary. Burn an isolated tree for light if u MUST stand and do nothing. Make a fire if u need to warm at night in winter, dry from rain/wetness, cook food or fight shadow creatures or deerclops etc. The video was otherwise generally OK. U could make a new 7 tips tricks new and improved version. Many of these tips tricks could be expanded upon and better covered.

@@squishyoctopi7042: that's true. As the title says 7 Great tips to improve at DST. Standing at a campfire all night doing nothing isn't a great tip in anyway. I like to teach very simple tips and principles to new players. I'm not offering tips and tricks to totally boss the game like how to kill deerclops solo despite the fact your a noob etc. I'm not expecting a noob to play like a veteran. Many players I met and played with despite being fairly experienced and able to survive and play decently have been taught and learnt bad "tips" or misconceptions. Yes it's comforting to stand at the safety of a campfire all night doing nothing but it's completely pointless, time & resource wasting and unproductive. The alternative of making a torch or 2 and running through the night exploring, collecting/gathering etc isnt rocket science and isn't difficult to do even as a noob. U don't need to be a veteran to understand the simple benefits of playing better and more productively.

U don't need to waste sticks on making an axe to waste time collecting logs. IMPROVE: learn to play better. Always have enough sticks n grass to make required torches. This is early game priority 1, Ein, Uno, ichi, jeden. Don't think about strategies that will help u survive bc ur playing badly or like a noob: IMPROVE and eradicate noob play. @@MahDryBread Well I really understand that but from my personal experience, I bought this game about 2 years ago (I was late to the party). I wanted the Vanilla experience since I usually don't like mods either, and so I tried it without any. I ended up dying before winter every single time without learning much about what I was doing wrong, so I just gave up. I didn't touch the game for over a year until a couple months ago I decided to give it another chance since I know that Klei makes good games and that people love Don't Starve, but this time with mods and the experience is much, much more enjoyable with basic mods like Smart Crockpot and Display Food Value, which don't change the game in anyway. Those kind of mods just help you learn. Sorry for the drawn out reply.

Yes, it would be better if you didn't make a video pretending to be a financial advisor, but that has nothing to do with the video you just watched of me giving 7 simple tips for new players of Don't Starve. I spend over a week studying dozens of guides before I do tips videos. I take my job seriously. When I make my tips videos, I aim to keep things simple and to help new players get into the game. There are better tips out there and there are guides that are more comprehensive, but that isn't what this video is trying to be. You don't get someone to start playing Europa Universalis 4 by talking about the math on when is the optimal time to demand compensation from the burghers, you get people to start playing Europa Universalis 4 by helping them take their first steps in the right direction. I help people get into these games because I love these games. There are already countless guides out there of people who have hardcore min-maxed the game and that's fantastic. This is just an easy to understand and digest guide to help people learn the basics. You can assert that I don't know what I'm talking about all you want, but you don't actually know what I do and don't know. Make an actual argument based on what's in the video. If something in the video is incorrect, then correct me so I can fix it.

@@MahDryBread what i'm trying to say to you is that you have valuable info, but there's more important stuff a new player needs to know, before everything gameplay related you forgot to address the fact that this game has now 3 DLCs in single player and that in Don't Starve Together one of the DLCs is part of DST base content, i only realized when you were on winter and there was no Tam O' Shanter in your head..., for starters, your tip No.1 speaks about the Crockpot you are mentioning meat balls with fillers of red caps/berries, if you are using those 2 fillers you are not using them for the truly important stuff, the best filler is ice, berries are only an acceptable replacement until you reach winter and all the ice is ready to be harvested, this works better on RoG where ice is renovable, but is still something to consider in base because of the fact that ice does not rot in an Ice Box, red caps are better used for Pierogi, berries to cook them and let them rot, rot is a better fertilizer than manure, it may seem worse than manure but the time you save using rot instead of looking for manure is gold, especially when starting the world, also in DST rot makes you recover Hard Health you lose when you get resurrected, durian..., you are using farms, farms are a very bad thing to focus early on, they come with a lot of problems and they take time that can be used on other things, morsels are good but monster meat is better, you just have to learn how to cook it, stockpiling monster meat is essential in mid game for the next reason, instead of cooking meatballs always learn to cook bacon and eggs, eggs can be obtained bi trapping a bird in a bird cage using a bird trap, is the best use for your first silk and the bird cage is simple, the reeds are the only thing that may require some effort, eggs are obtained by feeding a bird in a bird cage some meat, in the case of monster meat you first have to cook it, you can even recycle the stale eggs by cooking them and feeding them to the bird again, making the eggs fresh again, the best recipe for bacon and eggs is: a monster meat, a morsel and two bird eggs, replacing that morsel for another monster meat gives it a 50-50 chance for it to be monster lasagna, bacon and eggs last longer on your inventory away from an ice box far longer than meat balls, they give you more hunger and health, tip No.2 speaks of the koalefant, that's a big NO in DST where you can spawn a Bargain and that will end your run in DST, in base DS going for the Koalefant is only a good idea if you need meat, otherwise the uses for it are not as good, once more the farms are not as good as you think, in tip No.3 speaks about pigs and pig hutts, not something a new player is good looking for, you are better hammering pig heads that spawn in the swamp or near a touch stone, if you really want to fifth pigs is a better idea to turn it into a werepig by giving it 4 monster meat because of its upgraded loot, two regular meat and a guaranteed pig skin are far better than the gamble that is pig loot in werepig, also the normal pigs don't get mad when you fight a werepig, tip No.4 talk about camp fires, excellent tip, but there's an extension to this tip, always, always carry with you 30 twigs, 30 grass, 10 logs, useful to make campfires and torches that are the bread and butter of surviving DS, tip No.5 is about Deerclops, as much as i would like to agree that is a big barrier you forget the first real barrier, hound attacks, is a more important thing for new players to deal with those, tip No.6 , spiders nothing really that important, in base DS is better to wait till the spider nest is tier 3, and then destroying it to get the spider eggs, keeping them in control is better for Al the other neutral mobs, and finally tip No.7, swamps, i agree with most of what you said, that would be it, i know is kinda late, but life got in the way.

also some extra info, why not mention caves, you know for lanterns, basically the best light source in vanilla, bunnymen will improve the spider farms in point No. 6, by the fact that they don't eat meat and come out of the bunny hutches at night, did you not explore caves in DS?
