The photo you have of the snowy owl looking at you straight on is amazing.!! The shallow DOF that so often accompanies wildlife photography never fails to trip me up many times. Let me ask , what would you have guessed your distance was from that owl in that photo? And I am Assuming that your 500mm is the full frame focal length…..

I took that in 2006 I'm going to guess 40 to 60 feet.

I grew up in Grays Harbor county and didn't know there was a wildlife refuge, course I didn't have a camera back then. What time of the year is the best to come down the GH county Tim? Great video!

April and early May for the big flocks of shorebirds, then out to Ocean Shores area for shorebirds in JUly through late September. The birds are more concentrated in the spring since they're all in a rush to get ot the Arctic for breeding. There is also a Grays harbor Shorebird Festival in April too.

Great video Tim. How do you like to position the 3 flashes for Hummingbird shots, and how far away from the subject?

I think those were about 3 to 4 feet away, the units were set to 1/32 power. One high, at a 45 degree angles pointed slightly down, then one at 45 degrees on the other side of the camera and a little lower than the first one, then one about bird level to ge under the wings.

Hi Tim. I thoroughly enjoy your videos... I notice that you do not use the 2x with the 300 f4 and the Mark III. Why is this? I would love to see some shots and assess the IQ. Thanks in advance CD

Most of the time shooting at the equivalent of 1200mm is just too much, and I'm trying not to shoot as tight as I used to. I always have it in my camera bag though.
