Being born in the 2000’s I can’t imagine a life without these devices. But as I get older I can see why many folks long for the days when it didn’t exist. Seeing my generation become slaves to technology and social media and leave behind God is so depressing.

@@JA-2 I was born in the early 80’s so I do remember life without these devices. I think today’s technology is absolutely awesome and I wouldn’t live without it. The problem is the addiction and the marketing in these technologies. Internet arrived when I was in my teen’s years and while it was incredibly slow (💀) it wasn’t meant to be so addictive. I missed those days a lot.

@@anoukc6928 Yep. Technology is great. It has made connecting with loved ones and learning so much easier and accessible. There’s many great things technology can do for us. I agree the problem is these social media companies that have put profit above mental health. Youth today have put more importance in growing their social media presence that they have neglected growing their intellect. Anybody can look good on social media but it takes someone with good character to be appreciated outside of social media.

As always... Great advice! I have no problems about powering down. I am old school, I do not have or use a computer. Everyday dealings are 1 to 1, face-to-face. Growing up at suppertime my father would take the phone off the hook. My parents would have a catch-up conversation at the dinner table. My brother and I were asked what we learned at school that day. At the end of the meal we would thank my mother for preparing the meal thanking our father for working so hard to put a meal on the table. We would ask to be dismissed from the table getting up to wash our dishes. Next came homework, when that was done dad would put the receiver back on the phone. Nowadays I do have a cell phone however the only social media I have is KZitem and only watching positive videos that teach.

When I'm in the presence of another person, technology ceases to exist for me. I would like to see others apply the same consideration to others in this new year. A few days ago as I stood in a store line waiting to pay for a purchase, my heart was touched by a young boy of about 12 standing in front of me with his mother. He looked lost and bored, she was oblivious because she was busy scrolling through her phone. Such a wasted opportunity for her to connect with him.

Try not to judge others because you don’t know what others are going through. I was verbally attacked at a fast food restaurant because I was on my phone while my three young teens were loud and joking while reading the comics in the newspaper. Little did that person know that we had just spent 16 hours in the car together because my father had just passed away. I needed to text family to let them know where I was and the kids were frankly tired of my company cooped up in the car for hours and needed the distraction of a hamburger and soda and the comics in the newspaper.

But yes, I wouldn't dare to dive into my social media while visiting someone and having their attention. No comments on parenting. I never had to try and was told it can feel lonely. What can you really do in a checkout line with a 12 year old? Annoy him with making the entire trip a math challenge? Do you know that family's background story? Did the little guy fail to elbow a 2nd bag of overpriced crisp through 3 minutes earlier and both of them needed time to lick their wounds?

I hate social media. I deleted all my accounts last year and have not looked back. The only form of social media I now use is KZitem for watching videos and that is it. As a result of getting rid of social media I also spent less money (as I wasn't getting targeted ads thrown at me), became a healthier person as all that wasted time scrolling is now spent outside walking, cycling and enjoying nature and my mental health has soared this past year. It is so nice to meet up in person with friends and have proper conversations as without social media I actually have no idea what they have been up to! It has been life changing.

Totally correct. People are willing to spend more money (within reason, of course) to buy products from someone they like vs. strangers, and research shows that the likelihood of a doctor being sued for malpractice is less about their skill level and more about how positive their relationships are with patients - people don't (on average) end up suing doctors they "like"!

This was so needed right now. Thank you so much for blessing me with this message and reminding me that eye contact and time with others is essential. I have been stuck at home with COVID for two weeks and have used that as an excuse to be on my phone more, but I am also here with my kids who I can be giving more attention to. I commit to powering down every night between 5-8 to truly enjoy the hours we have dinner and bedtime routine together instead of zoning out on my phone. Thank you for suggesting apps that can help manage the addiction as well. Isn’t it interesting that when decluttering or achieving minimalism we usually don’t regret what we get rid of, but with our devices the fear of missing out makes us afraid or regret when we first turn off apps. However, if we give ourselves enough time to let our brains reset and break away from the addiction we realize we don’t need to be afraid and what we are really missing out on is real life. Thanks again for this!

I tried FB and Twitter briefly and found them to be huge time wasters. Except for the Weather app, I don't use apps. I did write an online career blog for years, but have let that lag this past couple of years because the government response to the virus ground my work to a halt. Time to get back to that as it prompted me to think about ways to be creative in my job. Planning to replace my IPhone with a "dumb" phone next month, as I realized that I basically only use it to call and text. No games. Also getting a hard-line phone for the house I'm building. I AM addicted to KZitem, because I find so much interesting information - about history, about gardening, about home decor. KZitem is a hugely valuable resource and an alternative to watching mindless and often offensive television. KZitem has prompted me to start an organic fruit and vegetable garden, which I'm enjoying immensely. Also a bit addicted to searching out vintage books on eBay. So I wouldn't say I'm minimalist, but I would say I'm more low-tech than my grown children. Touching their tech screens 2,000 times a day? I think I'll hold my text messages until after they get home from work!

Good advice, Joshua. I’m reading Cal Newporte’s book “A World Without E-mail” and it’s really enlightening. Can you imagine a world without e-mail? As someone who once worked a job where the norm was constant digital ping-pong - even outside of working hours - I feel that more firms need to turn off their employees’ inboxes for at least an hour during the workday. Most e-mails are highly unimportant and emergencies can be addressed via phone calls. The ongoing conversations over e-mail are, generally, just extended conversations that could be both scaled back and more effective at the same time. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

We think unplugging from our social routines, including church have helped us. We keep more quiet prayer time, reading and then we discuss passages with each other.

Awesome video! I sometimes wish there were no phones for a few days to see what would really happen. People at restaurants are not engaging in conversation or in each other and it's so sad to watch. All so true!

Thank Goodness I don’t.But then again I always as a child stepped back from what other people did.I found I can not be a follower, just because they do it, It just does not mean I should do it to, because everyone does it.

If people unlock their devices that many times this mean that they have turned off their phone that many times and you can use your phone for so many reasons that the fact that you've turned it off should mean something

My bad feeling after looking at FB too long is the time-waste rather than envy or jealousy. I feel bad and dumb that I wasted those minutes scrolling to "see what's next" when I have SO much to do around the house, for the kids, and hobbies I love that would be so much better to invest that time into even if it was "down time".

How about hobbies? Like talking a walk in the park; decluttering, gym, or cooking. I took Facebook off my phone; and only log in once a week; for any important notifications from groups like my running or workout groups. So am good without facebook. I noticed it helped me stop admiring what the Jones's have; best decision I ever made. I turn on the T.V. to watch the news, I may binge once in a blue moon, put my cellphone on silent and in my drawer when I am at work. If it's an emergency, call 911 😊first & my office phone is available. I further decided to put my phone on DND from 10p.m. to 7a.m.; another great decision. I think it amounts to be disciplined and having a goal...the benefit of doing this is because etc. You can do this, keep the faith!

I agree with everything I heard. So... after #4 I turned off the video, I'm going to turn off my phone and give some focused attention to my dog who thinks I'm the best thing in her world. I can come back to this later.

Got off Facebook because of so much negativity and arguing. Miss seeing friends posting pictures of their kids but it's simply not enough to go back to Facebook. Life is better without it!

i stopped using Facebook in April when I retired from work and i am much happier without it... your like about birthdays made me smile as it was the one thing that I thought about when I stopped.... how will I send my daily birthday wishes?? funny enough, it's incredibly freeing and I still say happy birthday to those closest to me lol I am surprised by the reaction of others when I say I don't want to go back to it... they are confused? or suspect my intention? something.... but, i can handle that :)

I don't use Facebook. I get irritated when we take our son out to eat and he barely looks up from his phone. I'm guilty of the You Tube rabbit hole. TFS Happy New Year! 👍🧨🎆🎇

I’m wanting to get off Facebook. What keeps me on is several real life groups that only use FB to communicate events, updates, or if something is canceled. I’m considering making a new profile ONLY for these groups and deleting my personal fb. Unless someone knows how to “wipe clean” your profile.

The technology has its benefits, but it's a two-edged sword; the way it has altered society is an incessant monster.
