Before the makeover, the trial against Rhitahtyn in ARR? To me, it was no trial, and the meme was prettey deserved. I haven't played the makeover version yet (because it's a single-player duty now), but I'm planning on doing it, when I get my alt character out soon. But here's my list of the most underwhelming bosses in every mainline Final Fantasy I've played. FFI: Lich. Being the first of the four fiends, he's actually surprisingly easy. Most, often, he doesn't do any damage. FFIII: Xande. Throughout FFIII you prepare for Xande, expecting him to be the final boss. But his fight is easy. I was rather unimpressed. FFIV: Dark Elf. You fight him in a cave where you can't use metal. Getting to him is hard, but after the first part of the fight, which is mainly cinematic, you can re-equip your metal gear, and then, he falls easily. FFV: Melusine. The fiend from Void that possess Lenna. She is really easy. Nothing much to say. FFVI: Warring Triad. They serve as the penultimate bosses before Kefka. If you have 12 members, these fall quickly. FFVII: Palmer. Totally agree with it here. FFVIII: Odin. If you do the dungeon puzzle, leave and then come back, the timer resets, making Odin even easier. FFIX: Deathgaze. The antepenultimate boss. Too easy considering you're at the endgame. FFX: Seymour Omnis. Just use correct aeon, and you're all but invincible. FFXII: Gabranth. Both times Gabranth is fought, the battles are lackluster. FFXIII: Midlight Reaper: Fought in chapter 8. Proper use of buffs and debuffs makes this fight rather trivial. FFXIV: Amdapor Keep dungeon (the normal one). It has no challenge whatsoever. All bosses there are jokingly easy. FFXV: Leviathan. While the battle is cool, I think it's virtually impossible to lose it.

Hmm interesting, I never saw Palmer as underwhelming since he was kinda designed as a joke and meant to be weak. Underwhelming to me implies that I expect smth great but it doesn't deliver, and I can't imagine anyone expected a grand, epic or even hard fight with Palmer. A better underwhelming fight from 7, would to me be the Red Dragon in the ancients temple, it kinda came out of nowhere since you wouldn't expect it there, but instead of getting a great fight alongside a great homage to a reoccurring creature in the series, it was pretty weak and underwhelming. Thankfully the Demon door made up for that soon after ;)

Red Dragon was also kinda made as a bait and switch so you wouldnt see a nearly immediate follow up boss coming. Proud Clod is a good example of underwhelming as it is so pathetically weak. I'm confused how Palmer even made it that high in the company. My guess? He's a relative to the Shinra's and out of family obligation, they grudgingly gave the weird uncle of some sort a higher rank, lol. And then happily and quickly pulled the plug on the space program when Cid's flight had to be cancelled to save Shera.

Wait, people were unhappy with the Palmer fight??? I thought it was hilarious, lmao. Palmer always struck me as a guy who failed upwards. He's head of the now nonexistent space division, and is seemingly just kept on the board so that Shinra doesn't have to openly admit the space division is defunct. I never saw him as a legitimate threat like Heidegger or Scarlet. To me it seemed like an appropriate end to a guy literally just resting on his laurels.

Name one Final Fantasy 7 fan who doesn't fondly remember the fight with Palmer in Rocket Town. It was moments like that battle and the flash back with Sephiroth that gavr the game its charm. I constantly hear from other content creators that they are looking forward to the "Boss" Battle with Palmer in Rebirth, assuming the game makes it that far into the story. Which I think it will. But again, Palmer was memerable. The rest of the list was needed as a mental refresher.

I guess I blocked out this aspect of Odin because the music and atmosphere of his tower was so cool, and he's such a fun GF to use, there was nothing to be disappointed about...

Man, the thing that will always get me about the Livia fight was that it was incredibly annoying too. Having to shoot her mech with the canons took up so much time (interacting with the magitek hand to load it, wait for it to get to the canon, fire and hope she doesn't move out of range before the attack goes off, dealing with adds so that they didn't destroy the canons, etc.) and meanwhile, she was never a threat, just sitting there doing *pixels* of damage to the tank. Then you'd get her out of the mech, and the fight would be over in 30 seconds max. Out of all the end-ARR fights, hers was easily the most tedious in my mind, I genuinely don't know why it was designed like that instead of you just... beating up the mech.(

mostly due to the team making it at the time not really being sure on what to do and copying design ideas from WoW to make bosses and dungeons more complex then they needed to be. they only really managed to settle into the style we see now in ARR late patch content and HW. I didn't really have any difficulty with any encounter with Seymore. Not because I had done grinding to be over leveled, but because it happens *after* the monster taming aspect. And I had run around collecting all the monsters from the accessible areas, as I didn't know if they would become blocked off or inaccessible through my play in the game like areas had been already. That combined with being a pretty solid tactician in general, it wasn't a problem for me. Honestly, while I agree streamlining Castrum Meridianum and reducing the number of cutscenes were necessary, I honestly really miss the infiltration/spy feel that the original version had. Shutting off lights to hide your presence, blowing up the pipelines, generally exploring the place really made it a unique instance in the game and I wouldn’t mind one with a similar secret infiltration type feel in the future. Endwalker had a few solo instances like that, but maybe one where the party needs to coordinate would be more fun.

@@Firestar1992 That wasn't stat squish at all. The first thing you do in the dungeon is turn off the lights, yeah, but immediately after that you tear through an entire vanguard and blow up a mech. Then you tear through a midline, *very loudly* blow up two cerulean lines, and by that point your presence is so obvious they have the time to air-drop a mech directly in front of you. Then Cid just says fuck it and blasts his way through a door, finally setting off the ultimately redundant alarm.. before blowing through ANOTHER door. The mission was supposed to be stealthy, yes, but it honestly never was. They're pretty much aware of you literally the moment you enter the place. What was a bigger loss, imo, was the Rhitatyn rework. Underwhelming bosses? Damn near everything in FF4 is weak to Slow, so as long as you have a White Mage, the game is pretty easy... and you ALWAYS have a White Mage with you. I could also say gimmick-y fights, like Phoenix Down-ing VI's Phantom Train, or using Cure on Dark King in Mystic Quest, I suppose, but I don't think people would want to count those and would prefer to count the battle as "underwhelming" on its own merits. Adamantoise in FF15 felt underwhelming to me. It had this epic scene of a massive turtle monster that was an actual mountain emerging from the earth only to turn into a fairly easy fight that was just... long. My party was never in danger of going down and the boss wasn't terribly complex, it just took a really long time for no reason. In FF12, Yiazmat was also a long fight but required a fair degree of focus to ensure buffs were applied correctly. Yiazmat could wipe even high level parties if they weren't prepared so the encounter always felt like it was teetering on razor's edge. When I beat Yiazmat back on the OG FF12, I put down my sweaty controller and let the victory was over me. I'm gonna get yelled at for blasphemy here so let me preface by saying that I'm a big fan of Kefka as a character and as a villain. But his final battle is SO disappointing, in part BECAUSE he's so great in everything leading up to it. The spectacle of it is unmatched--youve clawed your way through the origin of magic itself, the multitiered gods twisted into unholy parodies of themselves through Kefka's sheer evil will. The sky turns gold, the pipe organ from the intro screen starts up, the heavens themselves part to reveal Kefka's divine new form, he taunts you again, and then....the fight is over in a few minutes. He has SO few hit points that when he started crumbling away, I initially thought he was going to turn into something else. But nope, that's it, it's over, here's the ending. I felt let down. I know a lot of people rank this fight very highly, but those people almost always lump the divine tiers on the way TO Kefka in with fighting him.

Warmech from FF1 is hyped up as the first ever FF superboss. It was also the last entry I needed in the bestiary to 100% the remaster. I spent two full hours running in circles on that screen, and by the time it finally showed up I'd gained like 20 levels off the other encounters. I punched it once & it died.

My vote goes to Fiend (aka Doom), the ice-elemental statue in FF6's Warring Triad. Demon (aka Poltergeist) uses fire and physical rushdown tactics. Goddess uses lightning spam and a particularly dirty Zombie/Countdown spell which doesn't play by the game's usual rules. Fiend occasionally throws out ice spells, counterattacks, and uses stall tactics. His position as an endgame boss, as a central story figure, and as an equal to two of the game's other dangerous bosses (with a special boss theme!) means that he should be scary, but he's actually an incredible pushover. His gimmicks (random element nullification, high HP, counterattacks) just don't do much to stop the player from burning him down, and his relatively low offense allows players to just back off and recover if needed. He's not only the easiest of the three statues, he's easier than many WoR bosses.

For the 14 entry I feel like Ultima Weapon would have been a better example. Back when it was 8-man you'd literally have 2-3 people sleeping at the keyboard through the cutscene just to have the fight killed easily by half the group. When this fight was changed to fit 4 people instead of 8, they actually INCREASED Ultima's HP instead of reducing it for the new party size. It's not a lot better than the 1-sided beat down we gave it in 6.0 and prior.
@GerikKnight76

Yeah. Ultima Chrystal was a joke. Especially if you picked a day where charm was illegal. The crystals would do nothing and it was extremely easy to level grind in tactics advanced. Primarily because it only took 100 exp to level up and if you had a self target ability like first aid and a time mage you could hit max in a decent amount of time.

I actually found Yu Yevon to be pretty underwhelming. I heard the pagodas were meant to be a bit more involved in the fight, but I guess it was never really implemented. Wait a second... Anavatapta Warmech is easy only if you kill it with Odin (and by the way, you failed the kill in the video lol). If you fail the kill, the fight becomes horrible and very long (Anavatapta becomes immune to absolutely everything with a high Chain Resistance). It's not difficult by any means if you fail to kill in one hit (Anavatapta deal moderate damages), but you don't have good paradygms and without Army of One the fight is even longer.

3:24 Seymour is a "fantastic antagonist"? Did we play the same game? He existed as a foil for Tidus and an example of how Yuna may have turned out if not for Lulu, Wakka, and Kihmari supporting her in absence of her father and mother. Otherwise, he really is a lackluster villain who mostly consists of character elements from Kuja and Sephiroth. If anyone wants to argue on behalf of Seymour's level of villainy, go ahead.

I actually loved him. He was annoying as FUCK with always returning but he embodied what Sin really was in humanity - something that never goes away. He does something really sweet for someone in FFX2 if you play the fiend Arena. I like him. He came from a childhood of neglect, racism abandonment and a mother who threw him to the wolves cause she didn't know how to be nor want to be a single mother on her own. I notice both Tidus and Seymour have shitty mothers who couldn't withstand being alone with their sons and used figurative excuses to avoid responsibility of looking after them as in Spira world it seems you can't be an effective family unless both parents are present or sane OR there is a father by himself who can raise them and isnt fucked up I.e Cid with rikku and brother. Kefka got on my nerves more than Seymour

But I totally agree. He is an effective villian he makes you hate him and FFX does not spare him much with a lot of effective background telling on why he was skewed from his own POV. I suppose the point is more modern FF, but for me it was pretty much every boss battle in FFII. At least once you realize that almost every boss is equally vulnerable to the same instant death spells as every other mob in the game and they're equally easy to perma-dodge with maxed-out evasion. You just kinda have to choose not to use those mechanics rather than having bosses that account for them and challenge you regardless.
@MythrilZenith

Wait, bosses are vulnerable to death spells in FF2? I almost never use those spells because they always feel pointless, but if that's the case then I might want to try next time I go through FF2. Seriously, FFTA is pretty FAR from being a difficult game. It was one of the first tactical rpg I ever played and I beat the game without ever losing a single a battle. Don't get me wrong I'm not bragging about being good at video games, my point is that when I first played games like FFV and FFT I recall trying really hard when it comes to fights like Atomos, and Jura Avis in FFV and the first battle against Weigraf, the battle at golgorand execution site or Belias in FFT. But in FFTA I never EVER had the need to strategize to win a battle. Years later I played the game again and honestly it was so easy it felt like a tactical rpg for small kids, almost like a tactical rpg version of FF mistic quest.

Every boss in final fantasy XVI. Exactly none of them lived up to the hype. The only boss that killed me at all was second barnabas fight in nightmare mode. But it only took three attempts to beat him with only the limited potions available after falling. I didn't even realize that i was heavily undergeared i was, until after i beat him. After the first DLC continued to disappoint, i figured that was it for me. From what i gather, the newest dlc looks challenging enough, but i've already grown bored with the whole game. I didn't know the rising tide was free for me now until just now. i swore i saw a price tag on the rising tide when it was first released. maybe ill try it. idk. I'm not sure it's worth 4-8 hours of my time. There was absolutely no way in hell i was spending any more money on XVI FFXVI ranks bottom three in all of the main final fantasy titles for me. The bottom two are XI, and XIV. I can't get into MMOs at all anymore. I actually tried to get into XIV. It was on sale...i spent 20-30 hours before i said nope. Absolutely not. I missed the ps3 era altogether, so I never did get to play XIII, but it ranks higher than the MMOs on principle, and it ranks higher than XVI because that''s how little I think of XVI.

The first boss in the Earth Cave of Final Fantasy 1, the Vampire...what a joke. By the time you get there, you should at least have a Black (or Red) Mage with Fire 2/Fira and/or a White Mage with Harm 2/Diara (or maybe Blackbelt/Monk with sick attack by way of carefully exploiting the stat glitch of the Nes version). For how the game sets him up as being almost as dangerous as Lich, the Earth Fiend...yeah, that Vampire is a joke by comparison. Bonus points if you have Fast/Haste and can pump up your physical attackers with it. Just rip that clown to shreds!! (Like...the Dark Elf Astos was a bigger threat than that Vampire) Also in FF1, the very first fight with Garland at the Temple of Fiends is only really an issue if you try to go for it right away. And it's particularly hilarious because not only did the game's manual and even Nintendo Power back in the day suggest that you basically grind until Lv4 before going to the Temple of Fiends (you can really get to about Lv3 and maybe hit 4 while you're going around gettin' the items with all them random battles), *IT'S A STRATEGERY THAT STILL WORKS IN EVERY REMAKE OF FF1!!* 😆😆🤣🤣

Out of all the FF games I have played, I would have to say the most underwhelming boss-wise had to be FFVIII. It is actually a great game, and I love the story, so it remains one of my favorites. But the only bosses I ever had trouble with were superbosses. And i feel like the game in general is so broken. Reason being, the enemies actually grow stronger as you level up...as in, the more you level up, the harder it's supposed to be? However, in order to get some of the better magic, such as Ultima, you had to do a decent amount of fights. So on my first playthrogh ever, I ended up junctioning 100 Ultima to everyone, and by the time I got to the final boss, I beat her on my very first try at level 100. Still an awesome game though, but not very challenging.

I never take FF8's Odin anymore. He takes forever to kill stuff, so all he does is waste time. Also, controlling your leveling is crucial, so RNG auto-kill of encounters isn't desired. The primary reason to grab him is because you can draw 300x Triple from him. If you don't want to refine your unique cards, this is the first reliable way to get those. The time is annoying, because you'll have to leave/reenter the Centra Ruins a couple times to reset the counter when grabbing Tonberry King. (Tonberries slain counter doesn't reset when you leave, but the timer does.)

The most recent FFXIV patch (released a few weeks ago, I think 6.1 or 6.15) functionally invalidated the whole FFXIV section in this video. They realized it was basically a meme all around, and revamped the content to allow for smaller parties to get players through the story faster. That said, they changed the fights and difficulty. Also, Livia was a tough boss in 1.0. I get that it's a bit tough to reference MMOs, as they evolve over time. But yeah, Livia is in a weird place, and has literally gone through 3 iterations now.

"Underwhelming" implies that there's some expectation that you should be whelmed to a certain degree, and instead, you were whelmed to a much lesser degree. Who the fuck expected to be whelmed by Palmer? The game treats him as a joke from the literal first moment he appears on screen. His fight is exactly as whelming as I think you should expect. If anything, he's the most whelming Shinra exec, since he at least fights you face-to-face, while Heidegger and Scarlet hide inside a midboss with no special mechanics. Proud Clod is way more underwhelming; sure, the real boss of the zone is Hojo, but since Airbuster is a pretty threatening boss for when you fight him, you'd expect that the most advanced Shinra mech would be at least that dangerous to the party.

I thought the Kanaizzo, Fiend of Water fight in FF4 was underwhelming. He was one of the four fiends... but by this point in the game you still had Tellah and he had remembered all his spells at this point, so you could cast Lit3 which was way, WAY overpowered for this power level of the game. Made the boss go down in like only 4 casts. Total cake.

I dont think Palmer belongs on the list. He's both narratively and mechanically a joke character and they took great lengths to make it work that way. It fit perfectly. It'd be different if a Turks fight were as notoriously easy and full of jokes but it fit for Palmer. I think Necron was underwhelming as a boss fight. The embodiment of entropy and the heat death of the universe and he's only marginally stronger than Trance Kuja. Who, I might add, was already an easy final boss. The only reason Necron was a threat was for the very first time player that wasn't expecting him and, for whatever reason, wasn't prepared for status effects. But any smart player probably had anti-status effect measures in place just to go through the dungeon and for the possibility that Kuja would drop some nasty surprises on the party.

I don't know how popular this opinion is, but i'd say the fight against Zodiark in Ff14: endwalker counts. While it makes sense that the normal mode fight would be easy, since it's a fight meant to be done by casual players experiencing the story, the extreme difficulty fight unlocked upon beating the expansion is just a joke. Static patterns that give you ages to react to them, resulting in a fight were, as long as one single player in the 8 man party knows how to avoid them, you can just have the entire party follow that one person the whole fight and clear the entirw thing without getting hit basically. There are no complicated mechanics at all, just "here's an attack, don't get hit by it." And all that wouldn't be as bad if it wasn't the fight against the most major anatgonist that had been teased for close to a decade.
