This is all the info I wish I had when I planned my first winter trip to Yellowstone! 🦬 One thing I forgot to mention is that oversnow travel ends around mid-March and then the other roads in the park re-open to cars around mid-April. Exact dates will vary from year to year. I hope this video was helpful! 💙

In January 2018, we based ourselves out of West Yellowstone, taking advantage of both snow mobile and snow coach guided tours. We were also able to rent shoe shoes and cross country skis from a local outfitter to explore on our own. All was accessible via walking. It was a great trip, and I highly recommend it. The town is rather sleepy that time of year with not much open, but there were hotels and restaurants open. We much prefer Yellowstone in the winter!

That sounds so awesome! I too prefer Yellowstone in winter. I'm hoping to explore more next year with a snowmobile tour. Thank you for sharing!

December is nice because it’s Christmas time and you’ll definitely get a white Christmas. Christmas in Yellowstone seem beautiful. February is awesome too and so is January.

Thanks so much for mentioning not to approach wildlife. It's against federal and/or state laws, but when I lived near the Smokey Mountains, I would regularly see people within 10' of a herd of elk. Too often, people personify wildlife, with disastrous results for animals & humans alike. :-(

every year tourists get injured by Park Animals, STAY AWAY... they are WILD ANIMALS, not robotics, not petable 'disney critters' I have personally seen a tourist approach a GRIZZLY with a toddler in tow..... and several people try to 'PET' the Buffalo... (personally I see at as cleaning the gene-pool LOL)

ya don't have to book a guided tour. in west yellowstone you can just rent a snowmobile and be your own guide! the coolest thing was going up a mountain called lionhead (14000 ft alt.) . The Tetons are just south of it, woohoo!

Thank you Amanda great tips chains for your vehicle is a good thing to have. But you covered it very well. I won't do the guided stuff in Yellowstone so I will never visit it again. It's sad my grandkids will never be able to see it how we did.

Hi. Very timely info as my wife and I are planning on heading out to Cooke City and Yellowstone mid April. The NPS is slated to open the West entrance on 4/15/22. Will that expand our options or just bring in the crowds? Thank you! My wife and I have been enjoying your videos!
@amanda.outside
2 жыл бұрын
Yes once the roads open to vehicles in mid-April you definitely have more options of places to see, but it does become a lot more crowded. I went in May last year and while there are more people, it's still awesome to see the scenery and animals. In May we got to see the baby bison and I just loved it!! I hope you have an awesome trip and I'm glad the video was helpful. 😁

@@amanda.outside Thank you Amanda, for your response! We have been to Yellowstone twice, pre-Covid, and the crowd potential concerns us a bit. The wildlife is truly amazing. My wife has said that seeing the animals is "balm for her soul." It sounds like you feel that way too! Stay well. :)

Great video and guidance! My husband and I were there last September and loved it! I hadn't been since the 70's, when there were no bison or wolves. A winter trip is definitely on my wish list! Where do you stay? Gardiner? I assume there is no camping open, but let me know if that's incorrect.

Hello Amanda, we have a quick question about the roads in winter, in particular the one that goes from Salt Lake City to West Yellowstone. We would like to go to West Yellowstone in February 2025 but we are not sure if the road in West Yellowstone is plowed during this time? knowing that we are going to rent a car, is it risky for us to go there? Thanks in advance.

Bring a pile of money to pay for over-the-snow travel or get it in your head that you're not going to see the 'usual' Yellowstone. Also, know that there are few parking spots and pull-outs on the Lamar Valley road and the 'locals' get up early and monopolize what little there is. And the Rangers will harass the heck out of you if you stop in the road when you see the wildlife. It's freaking insane these days how many people there are out there in winter now a days.
