What really pisses me off about the myth about right-brained and left-brained is that since I was a kid, teachers told us that it was true. Now all of a sudden people start saying, "Well, he's left-handed, so he must be good at art" and stuff like that. Why do people teach us this stuff if it's not true?

Tsane99 yes, but limitless just gave him more pronounced functions rather than completely new ones, which would be far more accurate, the amount of info the brain is capable of containing alone is absolutely astonishing and having access to all of that space would certainly give a 'limitless' type effect, but all the superpowers in lucy are completely scientifically inaccurate, allthough scientific accuracy is rarely the goal of most movies.

Just what I thought. Also, it may sound quite dumb to some people, but I really think that looking at the so called myth the way you talked about (capability-wise, that is), it could be true to some extent. Because what was probably meant was that we only use x% of our brain deliberately. Of course, the other parts of the brain would still be active. It's dumb to even think that they wouldn't. But I think what was meant was that we deliberately only use little capability of the brain in concentrating.

My guess is that, since we are essentially pack animals, we do it to alert other people. If we are in danger and we scream, people will come running and either help us or be able to get away from the threat themselves. If we scream when we are excited its so that others can share in our excitement and joy.

The 10% myth isn't about phyiscal dimensions of the brain, but of the full potential. For example, every healty human being is able to memorize order of deck of cards. That just needs work and work. Most of us just spend the time watching Game Of Thrones and learn nothing, but if you study and train your brain 15h/day, obviously you have a way more "powerful" brain. It has more pathways. It's true, that we only make a fraction of the pathways that our brain *would be able to do*. Our brain has a phenomenal potential, but it takes a load of hard work to harness that.
@AndresMartinez-dd2he
10 жыл бұрын
But that is not about using a higher percentage of your brain. It's about using your brain in a more meaningful way. Same brain, same "power", just filled with more useful information.
@RealationGames
10 жыл бұрын
***** Well, sure. It's only optimizing pathways for certain tasks. If a human that teaches himshelf to walk on hands, he would asses the brain parts for that activity, just the same as one could asses them for calculus. I'm just saying that major of the people just lay on their ass watching TV and don't use the brain potential. You could say that they only use X% of the "full potential". I don't think we have enough time to live to use the "full potential" on all areas anyway though... Our brain is just filled of possibilities, so that we could have massive adaptation potential.
@theonewhoknocks5750
10 жыл бұрын
***** I think he meant power per weight (of the brain). It's the same with muscles. An athlete can use 95% of the muscle while the 'normal' man can only use 70%. (Sry if my English sucks)
@RealationGames
10 жыл бұрын
ahasd ahsfd Exactly my point. Muscle metaphor describes it very well. We all have the potential to have enormous strenght, but major of the people *only use 10% of that potential* "Power" is just very flexible attribute of brain. E.g. trained motor functions are similarly "used potential" of the brain, just as calculating.
@theonewhoknocks5750
10 жыл бұрын
***** Well You're right these are current numbers from a book I read a year ago, if we say the best (for example Usain Bolt) is 100%. In a few years they'll perhaps be at '102%'. But what I wanted to say was just that a trained muscle with the same weight as an untrained can have more power.

I don't think 'you only use 10% of your brain' is implying that 90% of your brain doesn't do anything - most people know that different areas have different functions. I think the 10% thing is referring to us only using that much of our brain's theoretical potential. It's not a brain that's 90% white and 10% red, it's a brain that's a pale pink all over.

If we use 100% of the brain does that mean there is no more room for evolution
@TheBlackLantern34
10 жыл бұрын
No, that's not how evolution works.
@BlinkyLass
10 жыл бұрын
Evolution by natural selection works because of reasons including the following: 1) Traits are heritable. 2) Mutations and interbreeding continuously introduce variation into a gene pool. 3) Nature is harsh, and there aren't enough resources for organisms to reproduce and survive in equal proportion. 4) Some traits are better than others at helping organisms reproduce and survive better in their given environments. As such, natural selection optimizes organisms for their environments. Organisms with inefficient organs, such as a large brain that is not utilized at full capacity, will tend to be outcompeted by those who are able to use their organs efficiently. Evolution will always occur so long as life goes on, because environments change over time, and new variation will keep popping up. We humans are in a strange place, because humans have learnt to modify their environments drastically; as such, we have redirected, but not stopped, evolution. So long as some people are more successful than others at reproducing because of their genetics, evolution will go on for our species... at least until technology allows us to pick and choose our genes, anyway.

We have always used 100% of our brain. All other animals also use 100% of their brains, the sizes are different but as it's said in the video, bigger doesn't mean better. Also, we are always evolving, and that doesn't mean we're getting better at everything, it only means we're adapting to our environment. If you want a "better" brain you have to change the structure and/or add new structures, think of it like this: you have 2 cellphones of the same size, but one is 20 years old and the other one is new. Why is the new one better? Because it has a camera, internet connection, mp3 player, etc, and a lot more functions than the old one.

Organisms evolve to survive...we won't get much smarter because we simply don't need to. The only part of the body that is still evolving at a relatively fast rate is the immune system (so we can better defend against foreign bodies entering our body).

No the human body will always be evolving the more one generation learns and get smarter the easier for the next to get smarter sooner. This trait stacks in all aspects of the human body strength, speed, stamina, etc. all these will evolve more and more and generations get better at it.

Well, we use 100% of our brain, but the 10% is the potential of the brain that we use. Also, both left and right hemisphere of brain are used equal, and no one is dominant, but one of them is ontologically more developed than the other based on genetics, enviroment you lived in, and education(both external and internal one). I also might be wrong, as I am just a psychology student, but I like this domain and I am very receptive to it. So decide for yourself.

Compared, however, with us, them would score an 2000 IQ.) If I am not able to provide the "maximum potential reference" it doesn't mean it does not exists. Search on your on such details.

That 10% use is highly misinterpreted, you always use 100% of your brain, like when you drive a car slowly the whole car works, but you don't always use your brains full capabilities, like you don't always drive a car as fast as it can go. For instance, if you went down a busy street you won't actually remember all of the faces you saw, but your brain will notice them all and since they are of no value to you won't remember them. From your conscious standpoint your brain chose to remember just 10% of things that were important and not everything you were aware of at the time. Or you know that feeling if that's ever happened to you when something in your head says stop, you stop and something happens in front of you that could have hurt you, like a car going fast, or tree falling or such. Maybe that's your guardian angel and maybe that's your brain noticing stuff you aren't actually concentrating on. Or why savant people have extraordinary abilities after a brain damage of some sort, well because their brain just went wild and let them have instant memories or unlimited creativity or unlimited calculation resources or something like that.

Benjamin Nguyen It's plenty trustworthy, the important note to remember when citing sources - and research in general - is to compare, contrast and inquire. Compare WITH similar sources, contrast AGAINST opposing sources, and inquire ABOUT the material with experts, professionals, friends, family, et cetera. Wikipedia as an incredible source is nonsense derived by teachers to force you to use the library or whatever. Wikipedia has more strict guidelines for certain subjects, and eventually a topic might be protected when it is extremely opinionated -such as with religion, or conspiracy theories - or requires some breadth of factual knowledge such as with medicine, leaving you to form your own original opinion or to trust the editors. However, most of the time the articles cite several sources, and various issues will be fleshed out or pointed out in due time, and over the course of an article's life, it will be improved, so you might decide to return to an article periodically to compare your notes or the article itself against future iterations.

How many times do I have to clarify this? When we say we use 10% of our brain, we mean we only use 10% of its potential, not 10% of its neurons. Think of it like this: You may have a car that can go at 200 km/h, but you decide to go at 20 km/h, you're using 10% of its capacity, yet you are using the whole thing not just parts of it.

I believe there was an Onion video on this, spoofing TED talks. The man used all of the brain's potential by shocking every single neuron at once, resulting in a seizure. I can't imagine what would actually happen if you stimulated every single neuron, but that's beside the point. Do you have evidence to back at up your 10% of our potential? I'm just asking because it's a strong possibility that you've believed the 10% thing for a long time and are in denial of evidence proving it false.

The 10% mith it's actually true. Using 10% of the brain doesn't mean using just a part of it, it means using all of its parts, but at a lower capacity. For example let's say we have 10 glasses of water and 10 men. We tell them to drink from the glasses, but we can't know how much each of them drank, so saying that they drank all the water is nonsense. It has nothing to do with brains quantity, but with its capacity and rate of proccesing information. And also, for example, the brain of Albert Einstein wasn't different at all, it was just an ordanary one but its capacaty was making the difference between us ( as ordanary people ) and the great minds of our history.

If we can use 100% of our brain, then why can't we make our selves have adrenaline? How come we can't feel everything in our bodies moving? For example blood moving, cells moving, etc.? So really I don't think we can use 100% of or brains. If we could, we would be able to turn off pain. When jump, couldn't you make you jump higher by making your body give you an adrenaline rush? If we could use 100% of our brains, couldn't we read minds? Even see the future. Déjà vu is when your brain Scientology works in sync, therefore we see the future to some extent. We could then turn off muscle control in our brains, and release all of our strength into a single punch. So yeah tell me what you guys think.

Trying to understand the brain, is just brains trying to understand themselves...gets a little scary if you think REALLY deep about it.

I'm not so sure about the example you gave to try and debunk the myth that bigger brain means greater intelligence. I assume whale brains are different then human brains. If that is so you can't put a whale's brain in place of a human brain and expect accurate results. For example a small new computer is more advanced then a big old computer. You can't then say that means size doesn't matter because you are comparing different models. a big new computer is more advanced then a small new computer. It depends on the way it is made and the size. I'm not saying you're wrong I'm just saying that's a bad analogy.

question about the first myth "bigger is better" why compare two different animals brains for this theory? bigger is better may be true but relative only to humans, or relative only to whales, etc.. not only is a whales brain bigger but it operates differently.

Here’s one- the brain isn’t actually pink, it’s gray !!! (with some black white and red)
