This is from the 1960's, but NBA historians would often write how Wilt Chamberlain would so often fail in the playoffs, and that was partly why he won only 2 titles while his rival Bill Russell won 11. He was particularly problematic in Game 7's. A few particular instances: 1. In Game 7 of the 1962 East Finals, Chamberlain - who had his legendary 50.4 ppg season that year - only scored 22 points (28 below his average), while Bill Russell nearly matched him with 19 which was his season average. Celtics won only by 2 so it just shows how Wilt's very substandard game was such a wasted opportunity. This is by far much more egregious than Steph Curry scoring 17 points in last year's Game 7 after scoring 30 ppg in the regular season. Wilt averaged over 50 points a game and only made 22 in the biggest game of the year. Regardless of the defense that Russell and the Celtics were playing, Wilt's low output was really a let-down for his team. 2. In Game 7 of the 1965 East Finals, the 76ers had the ball, with a few seconds left and trailing by 1. Of course they were supposed to go to Wilt who had 30 points in that game. But at the timeout, WIlt said he didn't want to get the ball as he would just be fouled and he was a poor free throw shooter. So he REFUSED TO HAVE THE PLAY SET UP FOR HIM. Sixers inbounded it to Hal Greer, and John Havlicek made his famous steal. I think Wilt's decision had to qualify as a choke. 3. In Game 7 of the 1968 East Finals, the 76ers who were the defending champions lost to the Celtics and blew their 3-1 series lead. In the second half of that game, Chamberlain famously (or infamously) only took 1 or 2 shots the entire half and kept passing out of the low post, instead of insisting on scoring to will his team to victory. He averaged about 25 points a game in the regular season and led the league in assists, but scored only 14 or 16 points here. He kept trying to feed his teammates although they were missing their shots. Was he intimidated or nervous? But they were the defending champions. 4. In Game 7 of the 1969 Finals, Chamberlain famously took himself out of the game with about 5 minutes left, and his new team the Lakers trailing by 9 to the Celtics. He supposedly hurt his knee on a rebound, but Russell criticized him later for leaving the game, saying that at a situation and game like that, you don't take yourself out of the game. Wilt did want to go back in later, but the coach wouldn't put him back as the Lakers were rallying with their backup center (the coach actually said they were playing better without Wilt). Maybe this does not qualify as a choke, but NBA accounts then were more sympathetic to Bill Russell's position than to Wilt's. 5. AGAIN in Game 7 of the Finals, the very next year, an injured Willis Reed of the Knicks famously came out and galvanized the team with his presence. Still, Chamberlain should have been able to completely dominate Reed, who had a severe hip injury and was hobbling on the court. Instead, WIlt and the rest of the Lakers had so-so games and the Knicks won in a rout. This was after Wilt actually scored 45 points in Game 6 (without Reed) to extend the series. So he had the ability still to dominate, but that did not happen in Game 7. Wilt is an all-time great, but some people would not even put him among the top 5 greatest players of all time partly because of failures like those. At his best, he was arguably the greatest player of all time. But not when you consider these failures in key playoff games.

I think only Ewing is the "wrong" choice of this list. Let's be honest, he was not on the same category of Hakeem. The difference between their level of talent is something beyond absurd, Hakeem was levels above him. Hakeem is maybe the greatest center of alltimes, talent wise he is easily the most skilled big in history. How can you expect that Ewing could outperform this monster? Even David Robinson, a much better center than Ewing and fast enough to keep up with Hakeem, even he was completely demolished by the Dream. This is not fair, really. Patrick didn't "choke", he was just overwhelmed against brute talent. Any center in history would suffered the same fate, Hakeem was playing like a God, lol
@MikeKorzemba
8 жыл бұрын
+Rafael Teles Hakeem was awesome, for sure. But look at Patricks numbers in the regular season and the post season and keep in mind that he is a Hall of Fame player trying to lead his team to the Finals. Hakeem no doubt was a better -center, but Ewing still was a hall of fame player whose level of play went way down when his team needed him the most
@RRRRRRRRR33
8 жыл бұрын
+Mike Korzemba Sure, but it is a direct matchup... As I said, potentially if you put any top Center in history against that prime Olajuwon, this center will be outmatched regardless. It could be prime Shaq or a prime Wilt, Olajuwon was playing out of his mind, peak performances on both ends. It is a interesting scenario because some people try to defend Malone using a similar argument. He played like shit, but he was being defended by Rodman (one of the greatest defenders in history). But, as you show in the video, Malone choked on crucial moments: He choked when he was not being guarded by Rodman, he choked on the FT line, etc... Now the same thing didn't happened with Ewing. He was just overwhelmed. The pressure of the moment affected him as well, sure, but I believe the direct matchup was a more defining moment than just a mental colapse. In my opinion, Ewing did a great job. His team survived for 7 games. If i'm not mistaken, he shattered some finals records regarding blocks as well. Overall he did a much better job than Robinson, no question. I realy think its unfair to consider this a choke moment.
@ednelson2501
8 жыл бұрын
+Rafael Teles What u talking about?? Patrick Ewing was one of the top 3 centres of that era. The admiral had a good mixture of power and speed. Where Ewing was raw power. Hakeem had speed and skill. All 3 dominated on there nights. Yes Houston did win, but you have to admit; it was close, are you saying that the rest of the KNICKS team was that much better than Houston ? I lived in an Ewing area, go back to your trailer park and talk about Hakeem.
@RRRRRRRRR33
8 жыл бұрын
tam hill lol, top 3. Even on his younger days, Shaq was a much better player than Ewing. You can't seriously considered that Ewing was on par with the likes of Robinson and Shaq. Much less Olajuwon. Whole different level. I know the Knicks is a popular franchise, but let's not overreact.

I know this guy wasn't a STAR but was a very solid player in his days with Orlando and that is Nick Anderson and his 4 consecutive missed free throws in game 1 of the 1995 NBA finals after his team was leading by 3. Kenny Smith ends up hitting a 3 sending it into OT which Houston won and eventually swept them but if Orlando had won I think it would of been more of a series. He was a 70% free throw shooter so wasn't the best but after those 4 missed free throws he wasn't the same player. His free throw rating dipped to 40% 2 years later and he was nicknamed(no pun intended) Nick "The Brick" Anderson.

@seoulting28
8 жыл бұрын
I was waiting for it, but it wasn't in the video. Michael Jordan, 1995 Eastern Conference Semifinals. Orlando Magic Vs. Chicago Bulls. Michael came back from baseball mid-season. Wearing number 45. Famously changed his number back to 23 after Game 1's Nick Anderson steal. Also during the end of game 1, Jordan decided to pass to Pippen, (which he was not expecting) instead of take an open shot. Bulls went on to lose the series. Michael also blamed the new United Center in their later games, something about the ball didn't bounce right, I can't remember the quote exactly. This part of Michael Jordan's career is rarely discussed, but it is so important for his motivation to threepeat the next three seasons. Had Michael not lost the way he did to the Magic, he may not have then won three more championships the following seasons. Maybe not for this video, but maybe a video compilation of "X stories that are rarely discussed (but should be) about Michael Jordan". Thanks for the video. Great job.

to be fair to dirk, David stern screwed the mavs out of the 06 finals. stern didn't like Cuban criticizing officials so he put the fix in. watch games 4-6, especially game 5 and you see wade gets every foul call even when it wasn't even close to being a foul. 2006 finals was a disgrace of a finals due to what David stern did.
@Jaywalk721
8 жыл бұрын
+Brandon Baumann Coach Nick does a good breakdown of the controversial calls in that series and debunks a lot of them. Honestly that series will always live in infamy for how Dallas won the first 2 and then were dominated the next 4. Its true that many calls went the Heats way biut it wasnt as one sided as many think. The 2002 WCF was Much MUCH worse
@brandonbaumann9632
8 жыл бұрын
+jaywalk721 I saw that video it was stupid, he was trying to rationalize it but there is no way around it that 06 finals was totally rigged. many people not involved in that series have said it was rigged. phil jackson said he thought it was totally rigged because Cuban always complained to the league about officials. and Tim donaghy who bet on games said he knew the series was rigged. you can try to act like it wasn't all you want, but I know 100 percent that series was rigged games 4-6. in favor of the heat
@Jaywalk721
8 жыл бұрын
I don't ever remember hearing about Donaghy commenting on that series. I did hear him comment on the 2002 WCF so I do agree with you that there were fixed games in the 2000's (especially favoring the lakers). Do you have an article for that? In terms of Phil Jackson that is purely speculation. And I tend to lean more towards what Coach Nick was saying but I guess we agree to disagree. Are you a Mavs Fan? I'm a Bulls fan
@brandonbaumann9632
8 жыл бұрын
+jaywalk721 yes I'm a mavs fan, but it really doesn't matter. the fact is that it was rigged. just type in 2006 finals rigged and a bunch of facts will come up about it. phil jackson wrote about it in his book and said that Cuban broke the hierarchy in the league by criticizing officials as an owner and stern wanted to punish him for it. and donaghy came out and said that the 2002 wcf was rigged and 06 finals was rigged because the league was tired of Cubans act. im not just making it up, and wade shot more free throws than the entire mavs team in game 5. no way that should ever happen in an nba game.

Not fair to put that on Karl Malone. Just because he didn't win a chip doesn't mean you put it on 1 guy. he would literally put up 30 pts, 9 or 10 boards a game. Jazz was a winning team but they didn't have a great supporting cast. Bulls role players had defined roles and they were deeper. That play where Malone got it stolen wasn't his fault.
@rasaecnai
8 жыл бұрын
+Andre Towler Stephen A Smith defined choking as "When a player fails to perform at crunch time what he normally do in any given night." That being said, i think Karl Malone should not have been the number one in this list. He was only 74% career from the line and the steal was just great defense from the bulls (I think they kinda anticipated that the ball would go to malone)
@kingdjack6
6 жыл бұрын
He was right to put malone on the list in 98 The Jazz were heavily favor to win that series and Malone had multiple bad games in fact he was reported The Jazz do not win if I do not play better.

Mr. Towler 98 Bulls were trash! Pippen was trash all season and his back went out that finals he could barely walk! Bulls had defense and Jordan on offense, sometimes Kukoc and Pippen and nothing else. After Kukoc and Pippen 15 points a game that finals the next players averaged 5 points per game or lower on that team one of worse supporting cast in history. Rodman averaged 8 rebounds that series started no games averaged 7 rebounds the finals before. That was a defensive series! Jordan had to score more than half the teams total points with 45 to win game 6 and take more than half the teams shots, make 75% of their 3 pointers and make and take more than half of the teams free throws and score like 8 points in the last 42 seconds and get a steal his 4th to and a game winner to win that game. That’s not a supporting cast Jordan was 35 years old shouldn’t have to work that hard offensively and defensively. Pippen had 8 points in game 6. And the refs cheated the Jazz on 2 shot clock violations in favor of the Bulls. Game 6 and 7 was supposed to be in Utah! Bulls luckily got that title! Pippen fucked that season up waiting until training camp to get surgery to try and get a new contract and missed 1st 35 games 38 total. Season before Jordan had to lead them while he was sick that’s not a supporting cast. Jordan was never allowed to be the 2nd leading scorer in no playoff series of his career and he had to be all defensive 1st team and lead the nba in scoring even after getting old. Bench had 11 points only 2 players in double figures in that close out game Jordan 45 and Kukoc 15. Defensively Bulls were strong offensively most years they were too dependent on Jordan.

Y'all might be right. PG beasted but 2 points on 1-5 shooting (0-3 from three) in the 4th Q is still unacceptable. Welp, Toronto was up 3-2 against Brooklyn in '14 and we all know what happened. FYI: I originally had Toronto winning in 6.

That was Cleveland's plan, you know. Sabotage them from the inside by getting Varejao on the Warriors. Totally worked. Varejao's awfulness gave Cleveland a few points from free throws and he contributed virtually nothing to the Warriors.
@Dragonblazeromega

I think that Ezeli and Varajao had a combined 1 point and 1 rebound in game 6 or 7. Bogut has that kind of impact since the GSW centers backups aren't that good.

why is lebron 7 and kobe 3? Kobe had one really bad game while lebron has choked numerous times in the playoffs. He even choked at the end of the finals against the spurs. If it wasn't for Ray Allen, Lebron probably wouldn't have won the finals. Remember Kobe has 5 rings while Lebron has 2 and only has one less finals apperance.
