7 Of The Best Cherry Shrimp Food Options That Your Shrimp Will Love - What To Feed Cherry Shrimp!
In this comprehensive video, I explore some of the best foods I've tried for my cherry shrimp and other neocaridina shrimp. Whether you're new to shrimp keeping or looking to optimize their diet, this guide covers a range of options to keep your shrimp happy and healthy. From staple foods to occasional treats, I've got you covered with detailed insights and personal experiences.
*Cherry Shrimp Food Types Covered:*
1. *Snowflake Food:* A general-purpose food made primarily from soy husks. It's easy to break into different sizes to cater to various shrimp colonies and is favored for its ease of use and minimal water fouling. Snowflake food expands in water and is typically consumed within hours, making it a convenient and nutritious option.
2. *Fluval Bug Bites:* A high-protein option featuring black soldier fly larvae and salmon meal. This food is ideal for boosting breeding rates and maintaining a balanced diet. The bottom feeder formula's larger granules make portion control easier, ensuring each shrimp gets its share. Daily feeding with Bug Bites can significantly enhance the nutritional profile of their diet.
3. *Bloodworms:* While controversial, bloodworms are a beloved treat for cherry shrimp. Despite the varied nutritional content depending on the form (frozen or freeze-dried), bloodworms provide an excellent high-protein supplement. My shrimp often scuffle over them, enjoying the rich red inner content before consuming the skin.
4. *Algae Wafers:* Not all algae wafers are created equal. Hikari Mini Algae Wafers stand out for their high protein content and shrimp-friendly ingredients, despite being marketed as algae-based. My shrimp may take a while to react to these, but once they do, they are all over them. These wafers offer a balanced meal option that complements their regular diet.
5. *Natural Algae:* Soft algae types like brown diatom, green spot, and green dust algae provide a free, natural food source that cherry shrimp thrive on. Neocaridina shrimp are excellent algae eaters, particularly of soft algae types, making this an essential part of their diet that naturally occurs in most aquariums.
6. *Mulberry Leaves:* Unlike other leaves, mulberry leaves are quickly devoured by my shrimp. Pre-soaking them in a jar ensures they sink and are ready for immediate consumption. This method also allows algae and biofilm to grow on the leaves, enhancing their nutritional value. Mulberry leaves are a great addition to any shrimp diet, providing variety and essential nutrients.
7. *Flake Foods:* Bug Bites flake foods are high in protein and a good supplement, though my shrimp prefer granules for ease of feeding. Flakes can be crushed to feed baby shrimp, spreading across the tank. However, granules are generally preferred for their ease of use and faster sinking, making them more accessible to shrimp.
8. *Shrimp Molts:* Often overlooked, shrimp molts provide essential calcium and nutrients once they soften, supporting healthy shrimp growth. It may take a day or two for bacteria to break them down, but once softened, my shrimp quickly consume them. Molts are a natural and important part of their diet, helping to replenish essential minerals.
In this video, you'll discover the pros and cons of each food type, based on my personal experiences with cherry shrimp and other neocaridina colonies. Whether you're exploring new food options or seeking to diversify your cherry shrimp food regimen, this video has you covered. Watch to see which foods might work best for your own shrimp tanks, ensuring they receive a varied and balanced diet for optimal health and breeding success!
