Opening a DBA is very cheap in most states and that creates a legitimate business entity. Photography is one of the things most will recommend a DBA instead of an LLC on most fronts because most people don't sue photographers as often as other professions, that being said if your working with clients and fail to meet expectations that very much so can happen and an LLC to remove personal liability would save you personally from any legal suit mostly.

I have both a DBA and an LLC and would establish an LLC first. Cost isn't really that different. Also, may need a business license by your city/county which as a home/office business is usually very cheap - $35 in my case. My LLC is for the photography business, the DBA links to it as the "Publisher" for self published photography books. While State fees are about the same, the hidden cost of a DBA is the legal requirement to advertise the DBA name when established in several newspapers. The huge advantage of an LLC, aside liability issue - forget photo delivery quality, think knocking over their Ming vase during a family portrait session - 1) tax advantages, and 2) the ability to say "I own a photography business." While you have a specific tax ID (free) for the LLC and typically one extra schedule to complete, it opens up an array of deductions most people do not enjoy - mileage, printing/delivery cost, depreciate camera/lens/misc photo equipment , home office, etc - to reduce your taxable income.

@@JorisHermans thanks for your reply! I think the issue could be that photographers normally upload beautiful and perfect photos, but sometimes the people who download the photos need something more specific rather than beautiful. And as you said, any passive income requieres time… you won’t get results by uploading 10 or 100 photos, you probably have to upload thousands! Cheers buddy!

If you're truly strapped for CA$H, there are literally, THOUSANDS of 100% FREE Presets available to download that are quite similar to the paid versions. I have both. To the average consumer/buyer hoping to spruce-up a home or office, there's no noticeable difference between free or paid presets.

You don't sell prints; you sell emotions. To many photographers sell 'things' it doesn't work that way. I just did a webinar about that.
