Starting Level 3, today. My kids (now, adults in their 30's) told me a favorite memory was when I played the piano every night as they were going to sleep. I played the first (calming) section of Für Elise. Almost 20 years ago, I developed MS. In a few years, I couldn't walk and playing the piano was as if I was starting back over at the age of 5. Fast forward, the 5th medication for my MS gets me out of my wheelchair, but I was still skittish about playing the piano. 2 weeks ago I decided to try it again. Mixed results, but not as bad as I thought. Your exercises have actually helped me to a tremendous degree! I came across your channel 5? days ago. I am playing songs I've never played before, hands together, after 1 try on each hand. Your exercises helped my dexterity more than my Occupational Therapy!! God has been so gracious to me! I am able to do what I enjoy, again! Sent a short 20 sec recording to my kids of Für Elise and they were estatic and said, "That brings back wonderful memories!" I thank my God for His strength, but I also thank you for taking the time to put these videos together and online. I can't tell you what this means for my life. Finding your site has been a Blessing. Thank you, sir, for your time and effort for us, (strangers at that!)

A bit of understanding of music theory would go a long way. In particular you should have mentioned the C major chord is in root position, E minor chord is in 2nd inversion, A minor in first inversion, and F major in 2nd position. Too, you should have commented, emphasized when hands are playing the same note but different fingers -- Level 7. This would make a large improvement to the video. It's supposed to be an exercise for beginners, but I doubt beginners are going to play at the tempo you do. So why not indicate a tempo start, and a tempo goal? Little things can make a big difference!

Thank you for explaining the chords for me. Jazzer is a great guy and the exercise is awesome. But there is no way ”beginner” should be in the title. No beginner is going to know that he is playing inversions. How hard is it to say that they are inversions when he introduces the chords? I had to scroll down through all the comments to find yours to know what inversions they were. So big thanks to you my friend.

The issue I have with being self-taught is there is nobody to ask when you have a follow-up question like one I just posted about whether to change the fingering if you play this same drill in Db. I'm presently also self-taught and trying to decide whether to get a teacher. The advantage is that you have somebody to ask questions and don't learn things the "wrong way" and have to un-learn and re-learn them later. The disadvantage is that it stresses me out to have a fixed appointment by which time I feel I should have learned something.

"Traditionally" -- for 4-note chords, when the interval between the 5th finger and the next note is a 3rd, the 4th finger is used; when the interval is a 4th, the 3rd finger is used. So: root position: RH: 1-2-3-5, LH: 5-4-2-1 first inversion: RH: 1-2-4-5, LH: 5-4-2-1 second inversion: RH: 1-2-4-5, LH: 5-3-2-1

Here's a tip for all your piano teachers - n00bs get incredibly confused when you show inverted chords and don't explain that you're inverting them. So when we/they see your pinky is on C they think thats a C chord, when you're actually doing a second inverted F. This is probably one of the top 3 biggest annoying/frustrating things teachers on KZitem do ALL THE TIME. If you want to reach a beginner, you have to teach to one. Inversions are WEIRD concepts for n00bs. Now, once you get them you'll never forget them, but for months I was incredibly frustrated with 99% of all KZitem piano videos. /end rant... PS, I love your videos still. You're one of my favs.

It is obvious, after reading the comments, that I am not speaking for the vast majority of viewers. However, I am a REAL beginner and I mistakenly thought this video would be aimed at beginners. For most people, it must be obvious which keys you are pressing, but not for me. This is a common complaint I have about a lot of beginner videos, not just this one. I know that there are plenty of videos out there that make it clear which keys to use(with colour etc.) and do not assume one has already been playing for 6 months I will have to learn from from one of those which is a pity as I quite like your style.

Awesome lesson. Thank you. With some work I’ll get it. My new motto for my piano practice is “Never say Never”. I can see my improvement. I love your teaching technique. Thanks and God Bless.

Great practice video! Thanks! The last half was good for me (I'm beyond the first couple). But these are great for me for three reasons. 1st, I need to practice keeping tempo and these are perfect for that. 2nd great practice stretching to reach inner keys while spanning a full octave. And 3rd, like you mentioned, builds strength in weaker fingers like the pinky.

your use of different , non-root chords for Em , Am and F was confusing at first. ie I expected Em chord, for example, to have an E root note. Maybe there is a special name for using these different base notes for the chords?

The inversion is defined by which note of the triad -- i.e. root, 3rd, or 5th -- is the lowest note (bass) of the chord. Within a given key a triad is formed over each note of the scale using the notes belonging to the scale. Whether the triad is major or minor is defined by whether the 3rd is major (4 half-steps from root) or minor (3 half-steps from root). In formal analysis, major triads are indicated by a capital Roman numeral and minor triads are indicated by a lower-case Roman numeral. In a major key, triads built on scale degrees 1 (I), 4 (IV), and 5 (V) are major, and triads built on scale degrees 2 (ii) 3 (iii) and 6 (vi) are minor; the triad on scale degree 7 is diminished (minor 3rd and diminished 5th -- 7 half-steps from root). In the key of C): C (1) is major (I), D (2) is minor (ii) E (3) is minor (iii) F (4) is major (IV) G (5) is major (V) E (6) is minor (vi) B (7) is diminished (usually vii with a degree ("o") mark -- not used for this video) He's playing the following (in the key of C): C, E, G, C -- C major -- C, E, G (I) -- root position -- the root (C) is in the bass B, E, G, B -- E minor -- E, G, B (iii) -- second inversion -- the 5th (B) is in the bass C, E, A, C -- A minor -- A, C, E (vi) -- first inversion -- the 3rd (C) is in the bass C, F, A, C -- F major -- F, A, C (IV) -- second inversion -- the 5th (C) is in the bass

Can you comment on the best way to learn how to move between chords using passing chords? When I saw your chromatic chord video it made me wonder whether that might be the way to go. For example, moving through the same chord progression you use here but putting in passing chords between the chord changes. Thank you for your unbelievable clarity in your videos, wow, you’re a natural teacher. DR
