Ditto for the retractable leashes. Used one on my first dog, a 20 lb Whippet. Before I knew it she was out in the middle of traffic - didn't even feel her go. Next time tried it with a Boxer and a min pin - leash the entire flexi - they took off after geese. Just like with water skiing, let go of the rope, didn't - still hurts when you hit the ground. Plus if you forget and grab that little rope, could get a really bad burn. Last but certainly not least, they never have to check in, because the leash is always tight - they know exactly where you are. Will add that point about pulling which reinforces more freedom too. TY - awesome video!

Thanks, so glad you liked it! And yes, I’ve seen a few pretty brutal cuts from people that tried to grab the retractable leash wire without thinking as their dog took off after something 😬 Not a fan!!

As a Beagle owner, sniffing is SO important on a walk. Love that you put that in the video - it’s a great reinforcer for heeling for a period of time :) Also - I agree, retractable leashes are the devil’s yarn and ideally should be avoided. As a veterinary technician, I’ve seen dogs waltz into the treatment room while the client was standing 20 feet away at the front desk unaware that Fluffy was in mid excursion. Besides, have you ever read the WARNING labels on those things? Risk of dismemberment and rope burns.

I can't imagine asking a Beagle not to sniff 😅 Imagine us going for a walk with our eyes closed? Boring! You always phrase things in my favourite ways. Devil's yarn is brilliant 😆 And yes!! The injuries that have occurred with retractable leashes are WILD! So many reasons I disliked them that didn't fit the tone of this video lol.

Thank you for breaking this down so clearly. I am guilty of a lot of them. Will start right away on improving myself then Milo 😊

Retractable leashes are the first thing that I change with my clients. It’s amazing how just that little swap changes the walk dynamics for the dog and the owner. Also, all the plastic in the handle makes any nuanced lead communication virtually impossible.

Completely agree!! They make proper training almost impossible. I understand the appeal of them as a concept, but find a regular leash & long line much more effective!

Great video, glad to see you are back making content. I was wondering if you had any good information or resources on how to increase food drive other than; hand feeding, adding in motion and without starving a dog 😁

Thank you! I needed a few weeks off, but I'm very back now and have lots of content planned 👏 Great question! Two main things come to mind. First, if you're working on a difficult skill then I'd suggest using something VERY high value to your dog. Often things like their kibble doesn't cut it. Rather than guessing what's high value to your dog, you can actually test it! I made this video explaining how & why you should: kzitem.info/news/bejne/2nmVnX-jgJFll6A Second, threshold and difficulty need to be managed. A lot of people put their dogs in situations they're vastly not ready for, then try to use treats to control them. It won't work out well 😅 I made this video explaining why this common approach fails & what we need to do instead: kzitem.info/news/bejne/uI-Qvp59oZ9yqqw

Thank you! ♥ She LOVES eye contact. Even around the house if we make eye contact it's instant tail wagging! It's hilarious.

I literally agree with all the seven pounts you mentioned. Repeating some of your points, two particular lessons I learned recently that dogs sniffing are more tiring (to dogs, not us humans hahah) than (boring) walks, and that training - or exercising - is better done before the walk so that when walking they can be more focused. I did the above the past two weeks and have seen amazing change. Both of my dogs seem to be more happy when heeling, eager to wait for my cue (usually 'Go sniff!"), and come back for a good four hour (at least) sleep aftwerward.
