Sadly also true for my mother, almost everyone who meets me has a ton of assumptions about me based on her stories and it's like... yeah, I'm sorry about that. I think deep down she's been telling herself all these things for so long, she genuinely believes them to be true.

Overidealization or (how i call it) "placing someone on a pedestal". Sounds nice and innocent, until the observed subject shows human flaws, then (after the shit-throwing, bullying and gaslighting starts) that attitude is shown for what it truly is: Dehumanization. More precisely, the opposite extreme to Demonization. The person in question is, at the end of the day, not seen as a "person"/human being and is not allowed to be. Always has to be perfect in the observer's mind.

@@esmee6308 Can you give an example? And do you mean your mom often tells people things about you that is not true?
@esmee6308
2 жыл бұрын
@@brynne77 I'll give you the three most common ones: - She'll tell people I'm disabled, enjoy video-games, don't get out of the house much, tends to show old pictures etc. All these are technically not lies but coming from a 200kg mother with pictures of me when I was bed-bound, most people don't expected a lean, relatively muscular, walking without aid woman to be her daughter. - She'll try to set me up with men, saying I'm single (true) interested (not true) and kinda goes back and forth without mentioning a thing to me until she's like "I need you to show this person around town please, I don't have time, he's coming over for a few days." And they think it's a full-on date from someone who's showed interest but is just very shy. First time was a 41y old man (wonderful guy don't get me wrong, also looked younger than he is) when I was 18y old (he assumed young looking late 20s/30s due to my mother's stories...) I got a facebook now just so they message me and I can end it before it properly starts. - A friend of her told her if I needed a job once I move, she'd help me out. (Since I'm technically disabled, this is genuinely extremely helpful.) However my mother going from 1 to 100 in under a second essentially agreed I'd start full-time Dec 1. Where-as I already got a new job, will still help out at my old job for at least a week to train my replacement. Meaning 7 days a week, I'm working... Luckily said friend asked why I wanted to swap sectors and well, I went from 1 to 100 in "oh god what did she promise this time?" And the story came up. I did agree I'd do what I could but well, my main-job... At least she's got months now to find someone rather than think she had someone, so I assume it will all be fine. I get in every single case my mother's either trying to help or it's the way she sees it. However this has gone on for over a decade, at some point open your eyes and see your daugher is 1. grown 2. not the way you wish she was. :(

Yeah. I get how there's toxic friends getting in the way of other people's happiness but if you know you got good friends and what they gotta say about your partner comes from a place of concern, listen to them! My closest friend told me about the hurtful things my ex said to them. Although what they said made me anxious they didn't want me to dump my ex, it was my choice at the end of the day. They just told me to be careful. I would've continued the relationship and keep distance from my ex and my friend to keep the peace. Then shit hit the fan and my ex traumatized me to the point I had to get the cops involved. I heeded my friend's warning and tried to resolve everything myself or make compromises but they were right about my ex. He's a horrible, horrible person. Although I feel guilty for not seeing his true colors sooner I'm glad my friend voiced their concern so that I wouldn't fall for his manipulation to get back with him.

To a certain extent, yes. Some things are no probs at all in terms of friendships though. It's the frequency, how many of these get ticked off at the same time and whether or not they make you feel bad if it's not reciprocated or appreciated in the way they had imagined in their head. Also, in terms of friends (and relationships), communication is key. If something can not be openly talked about and respected afterwards it's worth to take a step back and reconsider whether this is someone you want to have in your life on a semi-frequent basis (or not at all).

I recently ended a relationship of almost two years because of this. It started with small things, but ended with me realising that none of my boundaries mattered to her. I was constantly covering her half of expenses and rent, I was expected to do nice things for celebrations but she had the nerve to invite other people to our anniversary dinner, I was disrespected and ignored in bed, and overall felt like I could never be this perfect boyfriend she had in her head. It hurt really badly, but in the end I knew I was never going to be happy.

I have a friend in one of these as well. His abuser has isolated him from many of us, myself included. His abuser also financially sponges off of him. Still, my friend defends the puppeteer. It's pathetic. I just keep hoping he'll wake up and see the mess he's in and do something to get out of it. Can't do anything to help him until he wants it. It hurts but life goes on.

Unfortunately, there's nothing you can really do. I had a friend in this situation and she pushed everyone away who tried to warn her or who she thought didn't like her husband. When I called her, he was always listening in, so I know he was controlling her. I guess the best thing you can do is remind them of their worth and hope they'll realize they deserve so much better.

I began to have a crush on a girl at my college last year, until she ended up becoming toxic. As I would be busy with homework, she would keep messaging me every 5-10 minutes until I responded, and if I didn’t she’d yell as me and become jealous for no reason. I tried to talk to her about it, but unfortunately she started to gaslight me over it and I had to end up cutting ties with her because I started feeling physically and mentally sick over the toxicity. Having been almost a year since, I’m happy to say that I find myself in a very happy and healthy position!

Okay, so I have something to say about the first one. I honestly feel bad for those who are stuck in those types of relationships, it can be filled with manipulation and guilt-tripping. The person is so possessive and jealous, it can easily become an unhealthy relationship, especially if there's no communication. Most of the time, a clingy person usually makes their partner a part of their world. Let me explain a bit, you shouldn't revolve your entire world or life over one person to the point you become overly attached and toxic. Your partner ADDS to your happiness, not IS your happiness. I know that partners can make you the happiest person in the world, but you shouldn't make them a part of you. You're your own person, and they are their own. What if they need some time apart from you so they could have some time to themselves? You shouldn't be overly upset, it's alright to be a bit sad but don't try to beg them to stay or anything like that. They have their own life, you should have your own life as well. Sorry if this offends anyone, I'm just trying to speak my mind out.

I was just listening to a podcast today and the guy said when a relationship begins too fast, they are overly accommodating and overly agreeable, those are huge red flags. They are trying to get you to fall in love with them as fast as possible so they can assert control over you. Always remember, if you are always asking yourself is it just me, did I do something wrong, is it really that bad... It's probably toxic and emotionally abusive.

@christineghere2461

I've been in an emotionally abusive relationship for just over 13 years, and I only just realised that it was a couple months ago. He hurts my feelings, then gets angry when I get upset, like how dare I have feelings. Then he verbally abuses me, name-calling, insulting and demeaning me, then comes the cold shoulder for days, then he just acts like nothing happened, no apologies, he doesn't care that he hurt me so deeply. There's more to it than that, but that's basically the continuous cycle of our relationship. But it's easier to say "you should just dump him" than it is do actually go through with it. The emotions involved are so complicated and confusing, but I've been extremely unhappy for a very long time, and it has definitely affected my mental health, and I feel so alone... Anyway, thanks for letting me vent.

I’m probably viewed as the antagonist in this scenario (I usually stay single but I have a tendency to fall in love with my best friends) but it’s not withdrawing love, it’s feeling like you’re doing more harm than good, so you try to give them space so their lives get better…but at the cost of your own suffering. You have to see both sides of the argument. Most often things declared as “toxic” are just a misunderstanding or a lack of communication. At least in my experience…but what do I know

So many truth bombs right here. I hope this video saves some people from toxic relationships. I was I a relationship when I was younger that made me feel very uncomfortable but I couldn’t articulate why. Everything seemed good on the surface and the guy treated me well, what was there not to like? I later realized it was because of the last reason: the over idealizing. We didn’t really have a connection - he seemed to just see me as a object and a passive recipient of his “love” and affection. If something doesn’t feel right always trust your gut!

I feel like I matched with most of those points with my ex. Towards the end of our nearly year long relationship where marriage was a questionable pending choice, things just felt very off and those red flags that I once had at the beginning were beginning to really blow in my face pretty hard. It's been nearly 3 years now since the decision to call things off came to be and I feel like I am finally ready to try to start really dating again. It truly is okay to break off a relationship if you see any of these given signs. Yes, you care about others, but you do need to make sure your needs and desires are taken into account as well.

Yeah. This person turned out to be toxic. We used to have wonderful conversations. Gradually they wanted to cut back. Then, cut back more. Cut back even more. I was agreeable. Why? I was already becoming ambivalent. Cutting back on talks was fine with me. Two months ago, I began to see the hideous side of this person. I reached out a few days ago, thinking perhaps they felt abandoned, it could cheer them up. I got told they're not into so many chats, i.e., "I really don't want to talk with you anymore." They seem to have done a complete 180 on their character/personality: warm and affable to cold and aloof. I'm an empath of some sort, and I'm very sensitive, and I can pick up on, other people's feelings and emotions. I'm so glad this happened because I realize now, I don't love this person anymore. And, really, I don't want this person in my life after this. This, after thinking I really needed this person--I don't.
