I have a question. I’m working with a song that has a lot of dynamic changes. For example, different drums are used in different sections. Different instrumentation and pads on different verses. Even different vocals and chops. In this setting, would it still be best to categorize / group according to drums, bass, mids, and vocals? Or do you think it might make more sense to almost categorize according to section with those groups as sub groups within the section? Example: VERSE 1 GROUP (sub group of bass, mid, drums, vox) and then CHORUS (bass, mid, drums, vox)? I noticed this feels more organized to my brain but it obviously takes longer since I’m having to mix each individual section with their sub groups accordingly. Yet on the flip side, if I have ONLY the broad group stacks of bass, drums, mids, vox - I run into the issue of mixing the drums for verse 1 but then those general group effects applied don’t translate well to the drums in the chorus… and so on… does that make sense? What are your thoughts on this? 🤔

Hi Chris: You used FX tracks for, what I’m assuming,real instruments. Is it necessary to use FX tracks on VST instruments, or can skip FX tracks and just use the inserts already in the VST track?

You should update your free mix template file that you provide on your website. It lacks organization and missing lots of routings and stuff. Kinda hard to figure everything out when we’re not familiar with your own organization

5:35 not sure, do hidden Tracks not still take up performance? I would probably disable them first. This way you also won't accidentally unmute them.

Hi, thanks for the video, about time I get more organized, but my question is; When using a DAW, My tracks go to groups, then to my main mix groups, next to the Main Mix bus, then lastly to the Master out. Why is the main mix bus necessary? Can't everything just be done in the Master Bus? Looking forward to hearing why. Cheers.
@mixdownonline

It's mainly to use the Master Out for Reference Plugins only in case someone doesn't use Cubase Pro with Control Room.

Great tips. Not as important for mixing, but i always add an arranger track that highlights verse, chorus etc. Love having that on top of the project with everything in folders like you do. Makes it very easy to loop a section by just clicked the arranger track, and hotkey to loop the section.

Hi Chris, thanks for this video an the tips. Greatly appreciated. I wondered how you could also color the whole tab where the trackname is? I have Artist 9.5 and only the small part left from the trackname is colored.

@Chris Selim Mix Bus and Master - what's the difference between them. For what do you need a "mix bus" before the master? @09:27 2nd question - why do you send all the tracks to a bust and then to the bus specific for those instruments? What's the usefulness of that first bus? Thanks!

Thanks Chris, great advice and tips. Nice handling of the FX channels routing. I'll have to try that. The only thing I'd add is that if a track is going to be removed from visibility it be muted or disabled. I've had invisible tracks I'd forgotten about playing until I get to, "wtf is that?"

Dude, good tutorials. I'm getting a lot of good info to supplement reading through the Cubase 10 manual. I'm new to Cubase from Pro Tools. Say, how do you separate your faders in the mix console like you did at 4:21 in the video. I've been trying to replicate that and can't seem to find it. I would like to do something similar in my workflow.

Good question, the answer is not that easy... I would probably go with a Neve or SSL Channel Strip emulation since there's no Console emulation plugin in Cubase...The BX Console N and even the Waves Sheps Omni Channel would be a good choice.

@mixdownonline
5 жыл бұрын
Actually, on that session, all tracks were sent to me in "stereo". I didn't record this project. I usually record my guitars in mono but even if you record a mono signal on a stereo track, it doesn't matter much, the channel will be stereo but the signal is still a mono signal.
