Tbh taking Os during this pandemic didn’t feel too different from studying normally (or at least for me). Although it’s harder to focus and study from home there are also some perks to it, like more time to study or more time to sleep. If there’s anything during class you didn’t understand just seek consultation and ask all (even the stupidest) questions. (Or even better if they’re nice, they’ll revise the entire chapter on a one to one basis which is definitely very helpful) the teachers are generally more free during CB so it was also easier to get ahold of them online. Literally felt like free tuition to some extent. Ngl I also felt that even the fierce Chers were more chill during HBL cuz there’s no physical interaction. That aside, other perks of 2020 Os include A LOT of topics not tested, like how the entire organic chem wasn’t tested this year, for paper 1 30 questions we didn’t need to do 9 questions. Actually damn Heng ah. Cuz like when there is less things to teach the syllabus ends like around 1 month early and there’s actually a lot more time to revise. When I went back to school in July/August I started mugging in the library. The even better part is that since the tables are spread out with social distancing measures in place, the library was quieter overall and I got a large table (meant for 4) all to myself at the corner of the library. To those taking Os this year and onwards, one advice I would give is to start your TYS early. Like even if it’s January you can just start doing and skip those that you don’t know. Main point is for you to practice as much as possible. If you’re gonna start in July you probably wouldn’t finish all 10 years worth of papers by prelims (late Aug) or even Os (mid Oct). Like though there is a break between prelims and Os it’s only like 2 weeks so time is actually alot lesser than it seems. Like even if you do like damn little maybe 2 papers (prob less) in a month it’s fine, goal is to finish it all by Os. Don’t do prelim papers unless you’re practicing for prelims/finished your TYS early. Once you’re done check through yourself and submit for vetting. Don’t worry if you are worried that the Cher is gonna ask you to do and submit and you alrd did the book beforehand. At the most is just ask the Cher for a photocopy and just copy all your answers to submit as homework lol. As much as making notes is important, note taking should be a skill that you do on a regular basis (Kinda like homework) and not something that you start doing before your exams. Before exams you do more papers to expose yourself to questions and learn to quickly retrieve information. Also quick tip: since prelims are supposed to be much harder than Os, when you practice for prelims do prelim papers. Similarly, when practicing for Os do O level papers. In a nutshell, start TYS early, seek consult whenever you can (it’s literally free tuition just get some questions ready), and before exams do practice papers and not notes. Also I feel that I’m lucky to have taken the Os in 2020 cuz to some extent, it actually gave us an advantage over other years. Thanks for coming to my ted talk HAHAHAHA Please don’t be the guy who keeps doing weird shit during zoom class lmao

I did not have a choice to go to poly after my secondary school as I was from the NT Stream. Likewise, as what Sylvia and Nina mentioned in this video, I took the unconventional route by choosing a course I like in ITE. I eventually did very well and advanced to polytechnic with a scholarship and was able to apply to any diploma course of my choice that was offered. 8 years later and completed my national service, I'm currently in my second year in NTU (still hanging on FCH). ITE isn't as bad as it seems as I have learned a lot and grew as an individual. I remember wanting to drop out from ITE and take O levels as a private candidate instead because my family was embarrassed that I went to ITE. I also remember having friends that teased me for being an ITE student. However, after hearing many horror stories of my seniors performing really badly as a private candidate, I chickened out and chose to stay in ITE instead. Man, it was my best decision made. I have to give credit to my mentors (lecturers) in ITE as they were the ones that nurtured and paved the way for my success. I would say that if I were to enter Poly @ 17, I would not be able to cope for sure. Hence, ITE actually provided ample time me to learn and bridge the gap to prepare me for my diploma course. I would like to advise all students out there to not give up their dreams and push forward! ITE is definitely NOT THE END, as it is only the beginning. Just make sure you have the right attitude! Thanks, Sylvia and Nina for making this video :-)

I think it's not a bad choice to go to RP as I am from RP as well and did sport and leisure management, which isn't my choice either. My result isn't great for O level as well. I still manage to go to a private university. Worked for a few years and now I am back in school for my Master's program overseas and I'm turning 30 this year. So, I learned that it's great to read up on the modules that the program you're taking offers and see if you want to join in the program. But at the end of the day, grades are not everything because the experience you gain throughout your life is more important.

as someone who took the 2020 olevels, here's some tips if for those taking their olevels this year, when studying at home videocall ur friends, put each other on mute so y'all won't be distracted that way it feels like y'all are studying together, it's about the productive environment and seriously ur teachers do really care about u so if u have any doubts not only regarding studies book a Consult with them be it about studies or just wanting to have a chat and lastly it really helps if u finish ur homework doing ur lunch break so that the time you spend at home can be for ur revision. when u revise, it is when u realise what u really don't understand in sch and u can clarify ur doubts before it's too late! Ultimately, studying is not the hardest part, it's all about ur mind-set towards it!!

Totally relate to Nina hahah I got the same score as her (26) and my mentality was the same which was that i just want to get into any polytechnic. Due to this mentality and goal, I already knew to me it was impossible to go to better polytechnic, so it was ingrained to me that “what is the point of striving so hard anyway? I can’t go to NP or NYP.” I ended up in RP and thankfully I had passion in what I was studying & my attitude changed. I was having fun learning but because of the same mentality that I am never good enough anyway, getting into university was never a thought until I was in my final year. I applied for all local universities and got offers from 3 out of the 5 universities. Currently a NTU student. Until the end I was so skeptical that i could ever enter a local university with my fantastic GPA. So, that mentality is very important! Believe in yourself and enter the next step of your life with a open heart.

Definitely a relatable ep. 5 years ago, it was so depressing to see only 1 eligible Poly course on my result slip for an express student & the course was totally not I wanted so my relatives advised me to go for private diploma but the fees were damn high so I made my own choice & decided to jus go for ite & study the course that I was really keen in. Turns out that 2 years in ite (higher nitec) were the most memorable, useful & productive years in my entire my sch life. It’s really not easy if you’re on this (ite) path bc of fam & relatives judgement/comments, however it’s really what Sylvia mentioned that Mentality is what would shape your pathway ahead. Indeed it was the mentality I carry to sch everyday which allow me to achieve the results that I could nvr ever imagined/expected @ the end of the day & even made it to poly (NP). My suggestions to o level result holder is to think far. Its just a matter of choice: 1. to spend a few more years in ITE before getting to the course in poly of your choice, or to get into poly straight but in a course that you didn’t enjoyed. 2. To spend one more year in poly before getting to the course in uni of your choice, or to go to JC and hope to get into the course in uni of your choice. Think of the additional years spent, what age do you plan to start working? Are you confident that you are able to score in ITE/poly in order to get into poly/uni if you were to take the longer path? Eventually the decision you make will get you into different job and salary received - will you be satisfied?

Great story Nina, I had the same O'level scores and went to Republic Poly as well! My dad was very chill about it - and even said that it'd be alright for me to join ITE. On the topic of ITE, JC or Poly, I think it is really hard to take a side. Whichever they choose, the younger generation needs to spend some time to weigh the pros and cons, dig deep and ask themselves where they can make a meaningful impact in 5 to 10 year time. Of course, this is tough when they lack the experience or information, but positive role modelling definitely helps. After graduating from RP, my dream was to enter into a local university. It took me quite awhile, but im glad that after attending a private uni and working for 5 years, i've finally got in and graduated from a local uni last year. :) I felt very empowered with my achievement and wanted to work on my next big project and take a law degree. (I was inspired by Josephus Tan, "the gangster lawyer": facebook.com/josephus.tan.5) Unfortunately this has already become too late for me, as the programmes usually last 3 years, full time. (I am already too old) In hindsight, if i had a better guide and more confidence, I would have saved alot more time. Anyway good luck to everyone and stay strong.

Thanks for reaching out@@Grizzlebearify, I have 26 points too, and im glad you got into NTU. :) For my age it will be difficult to take up a full-time program and go without a salary for 2 to 3 years. (for a JD or LLB) I dont think it'll be nice to take an allowance from my parents at this age; and I'd probably need to save up and make some sacrifices if i really want to pursue this path. If I had heard about Josephus's story earlier, and understand that lawyers do work with people in the underserved community, i might have decided to set goals to purse this path before my 30s. (He's a recipient the Singapore Youth Award for his pro bono work) Anyway thanks for the encouragement - I also scored better marks than some of my JC friends last year. :p Good luck to you too and stay strong.

I used to think ITE was the worst path i could led myself into after N levels, because my peers always criticise the school, and obviously online comments. However my secondary sch teachers always told us that ITE is really a good place because O levels can be really stressful if you can’t cope well with theory. ITE however have much more interesting practical projects and lessons that for those who are interested in the course. I’ll also like to mention and thank my lecturers and classmate who actually inspired me to study hard and focus, i was very lucky that i have a competitive yet united classmates that will help you and not backstabbing you behind, and i have to say this from my perspective is that ITE is actually one of the better place to make friends (the RIGHT ones) that will help you grow and bond rather than poly. Now i am studying in Ngee Ann Poly, your results doesn’t matter, your attitude towards your future and your passion does. Once you have these checked, you will see that your expected GPA too! Now that i am in a diploma that i have interest studying, i performed much better than many O levels student because they do not have much interest in the choice they made. having O’s during the pandemic wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Because of the pandemic there was a lot of breaks we had, such as ending school term early and cancelation of a lot of school activities. For me it really did help me free up more time and focus. After school I went home straightaway everyday and finished my homework, study etc. Additionally I had more break time too! The journey wasn’t easy though and last year some papers were quite difficult and different from previous years (sadly). Online classes is not as effective as offline lessons. But you know what? I feel like it was a memorable experience still and most of my teachers did a good job with it. But yea distraction is real😂 sometimes it really gets so.. boring that you just tune out. in the end, I did really well and I’m able to enter any JC that I want to. 2020 wasn’t easy and it’s already an achievement to get through it!

For me, I did well for my psle but dropped out from ip school. Then, I took private Os but did badly so went rp then I managed to get into NUS! Many despised me and I wanted to give up on many instances but who knows I’ll be able to get into NUS and graduate? So never give up!

Did nina say 2210 instead of 2021 hahahha Anyways, I got 16 for my O levels and I couldn't get into the courses I wanted in the schools I wanted, I did Mass Comm in RP and I didn't even do well enough to get into a Local U, so I did a private degree, but I'm still doing well now, getting into good companies and getting paid pretty well doing things I like with skills I picked up through internships and freelance jobs while I was studying, so don't worry!! As long as you work hard, it really doesn't matter what your process is!

i have always been aiming for jc since sec2 , mainly due to the asian sterotype of going jc = 'easy and faster route' to uni. When i recieved my results, i did decent, but throughout the week i started to look into poly because for me, getting net L1R5 of 11 is pretty high esp so if i take alevels as i am competing with students from hwa chong or raffles, which i know im at the lower end My parents didnt like the fact that i want poly because they want me to follow my sister's path, which is to go jc, but eventually i put NP as my first choice because i know that i should follow my heart and not the influence i receive from people around me throughout this period of my life. I will admit, few years down the road, if people ask me 'its wasted to go poly when you can enter jc with that score' , i might regret this decision and feel embarrassed but i would eventually learn to accpt and uds that, i didnt go to the more' prestigious choice 'everyone expects but at least i enjoyed this part of my life 🥺

ITE good also no use. The world is crucial. ITE and diploma is forever low pay than uni grad. Even in office, promotion is always for uni grad. Senior executive, assistant manager and manager is only for uni grad. If salary is not important for future ....We don't need to go uni.
@thecommentatorofreallynoth9966

The elephant in the room at least you addressed. And beyond that, its also the company you mix with in ITE. In BMT my entire bunk 16 of us from JC, only my buddy was a part time smoker, who smoked once. And then you look at the ITE bunk in the next platoon, whole lot of them smoking, got half. Honestly obviously there's some issue here with the way people are mixing and socialising. And not only that, even if they don't discriminate you in BMT, vocation wise you can see how ITE people can forget ever of being a Sergeant let alone an officer. Army talk aside, its not the reasoning to choose where to go and apply for changes, sometimes you have to ask yourself the reasoning behind only 10% of the population ending up in ITE. The exam doesn't measure you brain, also your hardwork. If you're the kind smart enough and quite lazy, don't study also can go Poly. Do I think JC people are that smart, no, there's some fellow in the army who couldn't figure out how to use a washing machine, and that fellow is going to Uni. But going to Uni reflects a certain work ethic, a way of life, and some baseline level of intellect. All of this also applies to Poly. If you are lazy as hell, but smart enough, die die also can graduate with your diploma.
@yyl5336

Uni grads are able to think differently. Once you talk to them, you will realise why getting a uni education stretches how one thinks. Skillswise, they might or might not be better than a Diploma grad but they are firstly trained in being able to think. I came from poly and entered uni and felt the difference in how i was taught to think in more angles. I felt i graduated another level in my thinking ability.

Like to anyone out there who may have messed up your O Levels and cannot make it to JC, just take a deep breath, life has many paths. I went MI for a year, took my A Levels as a private candidate, and like now I'm in NUS. Like I know a guy who took his A Level 3 times and he's in NTU. If you're in Poly if you pick the right course, in fact probably a lousy course is better for your GPA to make it to Uni. Probably should put the word out, sometimes in life, you might want to do internship and find out things about yourself, and answer the question ,' What you don't want in life?' PS: And so Sylvia, a lot of us out there would have loved to be in those shoes of 7 points. I wouldn't say pick the top JC, but taking A Level somewhere nice and not being in some Nazi camp in MI would've been nice.

They had it rlly bad and difficult . but for the 2021 batch might be a lil harder. like in my school, im taking Os this year. and january is ending alr, and we are still in the sec 3 syllabus because we didnt get to finish the syllabus last year. and they got some of the chapters removed from their paper. which means lesser questions same duration. but for this year's all chapters are tested and all the teachers are so worried about not finishing the syllabus. so like. the third day of school we had remedials already.

Dear Thirsty Sisters and everyone, hope you guys read this. I feel that people should not generalize everyone to be "book-smart". Intelligence cannot just be judged from how well you read or how well you do from a paper. There are some people that went onto Poly/ITE and found out that they are in fact on the other side of the spectrum of being "technical-smart" and eventually, came to a realization that they are not the labels people have been giving them as being "dumb" or "useless". Furthermore, let us not reward the journey of "successful education" only to those who scored well in exams. Those that were able to discover their passion, made improvements and garner more skill sets are also well deserving of that title. In addition, do not only associate education to be with school because it does not mean that education is going to stop once you start working. It is only when we broaden the definition of what education is, it takes away the stereotype that people have been giving as well as the bandwagon people have been following blindly.
@TheThirstySisters

Good point made there! Society tends to measure us in terms of "book-smart", but some people are just more hands-on and entrepreneurial. Our grades def don't define our lives, or our drive to succeed. When there's a will there's always a way 😉
