I saw a video of Olivia Palermo's wardrobe and one of the main things I thought was interesting was that she does not separate her clothes by season. She keeps them hung all together year round. She is not afraid of mixing a flowy, gauzy maxi skirt with a fur vest in the middle of winter. She really understands how to mix seasons well! Great video as always.

I do this too! Love having my summer outdoors hanging there for me to see and appreciate in the depths of winter. Have never liked the idea of hiding clothes away unless it’s a form of “quarantine” before donating items.

Hi Audrey, you're living in a moderate climate, however here in the great white north, we have such a variation in temperature that I do put the fall/ winter clothing away during spring/summer. We can have the same color palette all year, but quite a variation in the weight of the materials. That being said your tips are always welcome, and I admire your style.

Hi Sheryl! Gorgeous point! Audrey has helped me think through what fabrics I want to be closest to my skin. A gorgeous soft breathable cotton works great for the summer heat but will also layer beautifully under my wool sweaters. Disclaimer, I’m from Minnesota, it cold.

I live in the midwest where summers are humid and can reach over 100°, and winters can get to -30° for weeks at a time. For me, the difference in the color of the landscape and sunlight between seasons also affects my wardrobe preferences because I tend to dress according to my surroundings. Ginger and burnt oranges in the fall (I love those colors, but they only look right on me in the autumn when the trees are turning and the sunlight is golden); red, royal, and emerald green in the snowy, blue/gray winter; and aqua, pinks, and pale yellow as the sunlight becomes yellower and the flowers come out. As a True Spring, I have a huge range of colors that I can wear, so I take advantage of that, but segment the colors by season. I bought plastic bins to store my off-season clothes to protect them from insects and mice, which we have in abundance since we live only two blocks from woods and farmland.
Yes, I come because she feels like a friend. I love fashion, but her videos are my favourite because of her.

I don't know if this helps, but you might consider three things: 1. if you're not wearing certain clothes, someone else might really need them. Maybe the thought that you've helped someone might make it easier to let go of things. 2. How do the clothes you wear daily for your life now make you feel? You deserve to feel good every day even if you're not going out as often. The clothes might be different from your old, favorite clothes, but they should still make you feel pretty. 3. Maybe try Audrey's suggestion of putting the clothes you don't wear anymore in a box. See how you like looking at a closet or drawers with just the things that suit you now. You might be surprised how good that feels.

Your dog looks sooo sweet and adorable. Yes, I have made that mistake of throwing out items and then realized I still wanted them. I agree with your tip about being true to yourself. I really adore the preppy look but on me it just doesn't look right and I feel uncomfortable. All the advice says to build your wardrobe with basic and timeless pieces. Such as a white button-down shirt, blue jeans, black blazer, trench coat. Go for classics, however, I don't like how these clothes look on me and make me feel stiff and uncomfortable. Great tips.

Surprised at how helpful this was! Thanks for focusing on what we already have and advising a measured approach to tossing clothes. These are 2 of my major beefs with many minimalist channels! I see so many minimalism videos that make you feel like you need to buy a bunch of stuff! Lol! And I have definitely donated pieces only to regret it later on. Especially since I am an upcycler, who loves to create new designs from old items. It is refreshing to hear a creator address very real economic issues many of us have. Thanks again!

So true about being overly aggressive about getting rid of things. A year ago when all the sweaters were a bit longer, I got rid of sweaters that were a bit shorter, or really normal length. Good sweaters that were nearly new. I donated them. Now this year with all the high waist-ed slacks and shorter sweaters, I think about what I donated and could just kill myself. I should have just put them aside for the time being. Live and learn. Your dog is just the cutest. He looks so cozy in that blanket. Thank you, Audrey for all your fashion wisdom.

Great advice Audrey! Especially as it regards being too aggressive when curating. I do the tote thing, into storage. My biggest challenge is having changed dress sizes more than once in my lifetime I’ve regretted some tosses. An 80’s Ports kilt and jacket come to mind. They’d fit me today. AARGH! I have more sense in my old age and nurture a penchant for thrifted quality items so I don’t fret too much about the mistakes. Have some thrifting tips to share?

Aaahhhh I love this advice so much! We recently had our Master bedroom closet finished with built-ins, and had to move everything out for 3 months. I only moved back in the things I loved and had the energy to grab from a room down the hall, and ended up donating a good portion of the rest from that season. Now, everything from all seasons is in that finished closet and I can see everything at once. Plus, for transitional seasons it works very well, vs. having a dedicated summer vs. winter section of clothing.

thanks very much for another useful and to the point video :) always enjoying these.. the part about having a year-round closet is especially applicable to me - i live in Melbourne (Australia) and the weather is literally the most unpredictable thing about this city. Most people living here have to able to change between 4 seasons within a day at times - which means i cannot put away a lot of the traditionally "seasonal" clothes. this on the other hand creates an opportunity to mix and match and layer pieces in a larger variety of ways and keep things creative

And thank you for reminding that it's important not to be too heavy-handed when getting rid of things. I still regret the leather boots I gave away to my friend. Beautiful Italian leather boots. This was the perfect time for this video!! I’ve been on this wardrobe curation journey for about a year and I was feeling reallllly good about my closet the past few months and then during this quarantine I’ve really gotten into my head. I got into tik tok (ya I know) and it kind of awakened in me the desire to dress a bit more young and trendy while still being intentional with what I buy?? It’s so confusing to navigate my ever changing style, and what is based on trends and what is based on what I really like. It’s also hard to be only 23 and feel like every single thing I buy needs to last me the next 10 years lol. As much as I love the slow fashion community, it also does add a bit of pressure.

Audrey, I’m having a problem with an over abundance of clothes. I’m a 52 year old. I’ve recently lost thirty pounds and even though I have gone through my closet, bagged six full trash bags to donate, I still have a large collection of clothing. I think because #1 many items were pricey, second many tops, even though they may be a little large, I can still wear them ether tucked in, with a belt, or tied up in the front or side. What are thoughts on getting rid of these pieces. I feel overwhelmed most times trying to decide what to wear and what goes best with what. Any tips would be appreciated. Decluttering is a lot bigger than I ever thought it would be and finding out what my REAL Style is. I retired from office based job and owned many Suit - I decided to reclutter my bulging wardrobe and made mistakes by throwing away all my work suits then I retired from the amateurs stage where I had loads of costumes (part from being a performer I made costumes) but luckily I stored all the costumes in the loft) but all my spangly dresses I took to a charity shop. (I feel sad about that but that is stupid cause I was never going to wear them again! Then I bought new “retirement clothes” that suited my new lifestyle ( I hated wearing them) new - but things you would sweep the yard in. Then I decided to grow all the hair dye out of my hair (now I wasn’t on the stage why am I doing it,I thought.) Any way to my absolute surprise I looked totally different, in fact people who I’ve known for years did not recognise me. The hairdresser said “People pay loads to have their hair like this” - I litterely felt like a bug emerging from a cocoon! Then I had to have hip surgery on both hip joints over 4 year period - so I now also put on weight. I’m a determined sort of person and have lost a bit of weight and am getting fitter. What I’m trying to say is not only because I now have natural grey hair instead of dark brown colours look different on me and that’s been my first struggle getting a Colour Pallet for me. The other thing is finding my style....I’m working on that. It’s all exciting....Your videos are sooooo helpful to ME. Thanks Audrey. Decluttering & Curating Tip wonderful.

Dear Haplone, you can enjoy your wardrobe even when the $ budget is small. So many creative ways to come at it 😃. Identify the best pieces for you to spend up on (eg coat, boots, dress, bag) and research your purchase. Get creative with the gaps in your closet -- swap garments with a friend, thrift shop on sale days, repurpose pieces (eg alter sleeves, change hems, add definition to the waist), borrow for special occasions and have pieces that can work in three or more ways (eg gymwear). Your mother too may appreciate some encouragement with her style and wardrobe 💑. Be unique ... and build confidence in your style and "look". x

I don't think having two or three "uniforms" is a bad thing. But if you really want a more cohesive wardrobe maybe, you could look into the overall color palett? Or some item that would be incorporated in all of your outfits (a specific jewelry, a scarf, a belt, etc.)?
