Stay out of the bass players way! That's how far I've made into the video and had to comment. As a bass player I can't tell you how frustrating it is to hear a song ruined by a guitarist trying to hack in the bass. Let the drummer and bass player set the groove and fall into it. Let the bassist play the bass line. Thanks for letting me rant to no one. Great to see you and hear you play again travis!

Maybe one more tip: think of your guitar as an extension of the drums. If you’re playing soul, you BETTER be on the 2 as a second snare, and when camping behind a soloist, focus not on the soloist so much as the kick drum; it’ll keep you in the groove and your band mates and audiences smiling. The vlogs are great! Thanks for what you do:)

Another cool rhythm guitar trick I've learned was using contrary motion in my voicings. Like in the example of G to Am: I would play an open C shape on the 7th fret to the Em open shape on the 5th fret. It really fattens things up and adds a cool texture. Another thing in the instance of playing with more than two guitarists, don't be afraid to omit notes. Example: Instead of playing the full C7 chord (C,E,G,Bb) only play C,E,Bb. Omitting the 5 is an amazing way to create space. In all likelihood, the other rhythm guitarist (acoustic or otherwise) the bass player, and the piano player will all be playing the 5th interval. Dropping that tone will bring out the other color tones within the chord and give it more definition. The 5th inspires a lot of ambiguity. Which can also be right for certain situations. But you basically need to let your ear tell you when each time is right.
@ricardorodriguez5549

Brett Marlar spoken like a true pro. Your points are right on target. When I was playing the variety/wedding band circuit with soul and r&b bands both horn sections and multiple vocalists, I used to love playing a “game” of seeing how “small” I could make each voicing. The bass has the 1, and the horns have all those fun extensions, while the keyboardists LOVE rocking that 5 (because it makes them feel like rock and rollers), so I would cozy up on those sweet doublestops and sliding 6ths while trying to keep my right hand locked in with the (inevitably musically boisterous) bassist and drummer; shoot, I’ve spent whole evenings hanging just with the 3 and the 7.

Not just drum loops, but there's videos on here of just the drum parts of songs. Many times as a warm up I've played to a video of "Don't Look Back In Anger," isolated drums. Maybe that's considered a pretty basic song, but there are a lot of changes in it. Definitely gets my timing muscle going, nice and simply.

10:26 My suggestion would be go pick yourself up one of those $50 Digitech Trio pedals and practice to that. Gives you drums and a bassline in whatever style you need, and lets you play along with it. Or you can get the bigger one (the Trio+) that has a built in looper so you can record a loop of yourself playing rhythm and solo over it. Might be a faux-paux to mention a Digitech pedal in a Wampler video.... but kind of had to b/c they are the only ones who make anything like it really.

Early on, I kept the same EQ settings when playing at home and when practicing with the small band I was in. Would you say, that cutting some High frequencies and some Gain in my sound would improve my Ryhtm parts?
@BuzzcutGtr
5 жыл бұрын
@@mrcrowley1992 THE SHORT ANSWER: Not without knowing what type of stuff you play. E.g., if you're into Pantera or Anthrax, you probably want to lay on the gain a bit thicker, and a bit more treble might give you the more "aggressive" tone you're after. THE LONG ANSWER: I will say that most of us guitarists - myself included - tend to put in too much high end, but in a lot of cases that's because our amps are behind us and pointed at our butts (bass players, now's your chance to get a dig in LOL). I have a 1x12" Mesa combo, so I can set it off to the side of the stage and tilt it up, hence less high end needed at the amp; the sound man can add it in at the board if necessary. It also means I can turn down my volume a bit without sacrificing too much power-tube overdrive; plus I did myself enough hearing damage in the 80's with my 100-watt Marshall half-stack. :-) Also, if you play with another guitarist in your band, take some time to try to "weave" your tones together so that you get a good sonic texture going, but each of you can still pick out which guitar is which on a noisy stage. Turn them knobs and see what works!
