Living Survival :) Yeah... it's a tough trade off... cover up or run the risk of a tick bite. The other day I went for a run, came back... did pushups and stuff on a picnic table that I have on the edge of the woods and was not out much more than that... found a tick attached to my left armpit... of course I was in a tee shirt and shorts...

Ticks are nasty, but they don't fall from trees, branches or leaves. Most of the time they don't venture any higher than kneehigh. Their natural habitat are dead leaves and low growth like grass. From there they crawl on your feet, ankles or calves. Once they're on your lower legs, they tend to crawl up looking for comfy places like your groin or armpits.

Two years ago i went into the woods about 15 miles. I stopped to rest, and noticed ticks all over the tree branches. When i left the woods and got back out to wash off. I had about 20 ticks on me. I had never had that many ticks on me before. Maybe one or two. It must have been a bad year for them. Because i had been in those woods a few hundred times, and never seen so many ticks. It was in the state of Alabama.

I never used permethrin until I had to deal with ticks and now I douse everything with it before I hit the woods. Save your money and your forearm and don't get the SAwyer pumps. Buy the 36% concentrates and a 1 gallon weed sprayer. About 1.5oz of concentrate makes one gallon and it's a LOT easier to just pump it and spray all your items than it is to use that trigger. In fact I was going spray all my stuff tomorrow for the season. The Sawyer bottles are about $15/24oz and the concentrates are about $24/32oz - which makes 18 gallons (2,304 oz).

What do you mix it with?! Water I like this idea a lot of have 50% from the military I wanna use up here in Canada thanks.
@JayWandersOut
9 жыл бұрын
Yep, just water. For clothes you want 0.5% so you have to do the math. 128oz * .005 = .64oz so you want .64oz of permethrin per gallon. Since your mix is 50%, .64/x=1/2 which comes to 1.28oz for one gallon. I guess the real equation would be ((128-x)*.005)/x = .50 but it's close enough. I even use it to spray around the house or on and around ant hills. It keeps killing for a very long time. You want to respray your clothes after about 9 washes or 6 months, whichever comes first or if it doesn't seem to work anymore.

for what it's worth i was following a similar converstion on an outdoor forum here in georgia several years ago. this one guy i know, who lives in the woods, near a swamp in south georgia, drinks a shot glass worth of apple cider vinegar everyday. stated he has not had a tick or bug bite in years. another guy, i don't know, said he couldn't take the harshness of the vinegar, so he drank a small glass of pickle juice everyday. again not a tick or bug bite in years. i belong to a traditional archery club. we have archery shoots once a month on a course set up in the woods. one shoot i had bug bites all up and down my legs and feet. the next month, starting the week before, i would drink a shot of apple cider vinegar and a big swallow of pickle juice. at that shoot i had 2 bug bites. in 2 weeks i'll be going to do some scouting at the deer camp, and already started the vinegar and pickle juice, i'll let you know how it goes.

Roger Hartman I agree with you. But when it comes to ticks my perspective changes. Most people put chemicals on their skin everyday in the form of deodorants, creams/moisterizers, etc. Plus the exposure to chemtrails. Now ....lets talk about all the chemicals that go into our bodies. jk
@UltimateSurvivalTips
9 жыл бұрын
Roger Hartman Indeed... I don't recommend putting permethrin on your body. In fact it doesn't bond to your skin anyway... That's why you spray on your outer cloths. It bonds to the fibers and lasts quite some time. Hope this helps. ~D

Roger Hartman Zip lock bag, old sock with no holes, and some sulfur. Put sulfur in the sock, tie a knot, and keep in a zip lock bag.. Powder your wet regions prior to dressing.. then also entry points of your clothing after you dress. We did this as kids growing up in South Florida back in the 60s and 70's. Works great against ticks, fleas, lice, chiggers, and the what not.. Also, you can, for a further protection, by a cheap dog flea and tick collar and put one around each ankle. And don't forget to powder your hat... Put the sock back into your zip lock bag and your ready to go.

David, I live out in the desert and love all of your videos and have even spent a night by myself in the desert. I used many of your tips mentioned and even more. I (in the winter usually) go dirt biking or motocross and explore trails and whatnot but have been especially prone to my vehicle running out of gas or breaking down. The bike is a 2-stoke so its a gas hog and always breaks down but I love going far and exploring...There's so many places to explore but I go by myself and can't bring much more than my cell phone with me. I don't even get service where I go anyways. I am especially worried of getting stranded or lost. I have thought more than I should've about creating a kit to strap onto the tail or handlebars of my dirt bike but with speed, it might fly off and it might just be too heavy on the dirt bike. Would you be able to create a kit to velcro or zip tie safely to it, not be heavy, and be relatively cost efficient (under $100 total) if possible but I's be willing to pay more for my safety. If you can create a kit to solve this problem, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

nutnfan1 I have mixed opinions of DEET. In Scotland a few years back, during midge season, it didn't do a great deal to repel midges, a walking buddy got bitten under his watch strap, the one place he hadn't applied it because DEET and plastic don't get long. Later on the walk, my other walking buddy's Oakley sunglasses sheared apart at the nose bridge. The DEET he's applied to his forehead ran off as he perspired, and weakened the plastic there. I used to think it worked because I didn't get bitten, but I just don't think I'm much of a midge magnet, I've seen them fly past me and land on others.

I spent many years scouting ranches in the Texas Hill Country and South Texas which I thought was tick paradise there were so many of them. This is in the '80s. I would always put on a pair of my wife's panty hose. While I got some laughs I also got a lot less ticks than the hunters and ranchers I was scouting for.
