Just throwing this out there: using Fly in Pokémon. Sure, it seems like a reasonable way of getting around at first, but consider a lot of the Pokémon you can do it with. Plenty of them are tiny and should in no way be capable of carrying a 10-year old over great distances. One of them is an ancient ghost robot with rockets legs. My personal favorite is Doduo/Dodrio, who, according to the Pokédex, can’t actually fly.

The Secret World MMO subscribes to the 'hollow Earth' theory. One of the mysterious ancient powers built a train network through it that the current factions use as a fast-travel system. Fallen Earth, another MMO, had a particularly disturbing fast-travel system. You play a clone warmed up in a high-tech bomb shelter after an apocalypse. When you want to fast travel, you step into a scanning chamber that uploads your memories and skills into a fresh clone at the destination - and straight-up murders the old one. ...Not sure that system actually beats walking.
@bilateralrope8643
3 жыл бұрын
Eve Online has jumping between clones as the fast travel and the respawn systems. When you die, you wake up in a fresh clone where you installed that clone. Or you could put your current clone in storage at one station to wake up in a clone you stored elsewhere. Both methods are used for fast travel by players.
@leeman27534

Disagree with #3... Jedi Fallen Order wasn't really a fast travel system, it was just a scripted event for that singular purpose of moving you through one staged area. Mailing yourself to different parts of a facility by hiding in a box with the right shipping label has been part of the series at least since the original 1998 PS1 Metal Gear Solid. You could get to most of the Shadow Moses Island facility on foot if you wanted, but it was quicker for the player and safer for Snake to just hop in the bed of a truck, hide in the box, and let the guards chauffeur you around.

Here's a few weird fast travel methods: Most of the fast travel methods in some Zelda games. In Ocarina of Time, you fast traveled via playing a song on your magical instrument the Ocarina of Time, and in Breath of the Wild, you fast traveled via an ancient glorified mobile tablet's map. The Shiekah Slate, which is basically a mobile tablet made of ancient Shiekah technology.

Space Engineers lets you build your own fast travel system, but it's a bit like Terminator time travel in that you can't take anything with you. When you die, you can choose to respawn at any medical room (depending on your world settings) so you build a medical room with a welder next to it in any locations you want to be able transport to. Flick a switch to have the welder zap you into oblivion, then choose your exit destination. For added hilarity, use a grinder instead...

Somehow I doubt most of these can top the fast travel in Return to Zork which is based on the very real theory that a) vultures are magnetic, b) respond to whistle blows and will not be hostile even if they are everywhere else, c) can carry a grown-ass human, and d) can travel through solid ground to take you in and out of underground tunnels. There is nothing in the game to tell you that blowing a whistle while holding up a magnet will unlock your fast travel option. You're just expected to try all combos of your extensive inventory together (and woe to you who accidentally destroy an item in this process since you need basically everything to finish the game).

It might not seem so strange to take a taxi around LA, but consider one possibly driven by the very first vampire. Sure seems like that is the case in World of Darkness' Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. This is kinda odd when you consider that to most any vampire in that setting, seeing Cain is a sign of their apocalypse, via the old clan sires waking up, thirsty. You can see how if you play as one of the clan known for otherworldly insight, but also wailing madness, you would be a little freaked out once you are convinced that this is actually the case.

I have two that might not be considered fast travel, but bear with me. I have one last one for good measure. Persona series: There exists an item called the Goho-M (yes, horrible pun). It, along with the skill Traesto, teleport you to the start of the area. Ignoring Morgana's driving in 5, how do you suddenly teleport to the gates of an 8-story castle in a second? Monster Hunter: No, this is not the cart Felynes. I'm more interested in the Wingdrakes in World. Admittedly weird to tame little monsters to fly you where you need to go, can I PLEASE speak to the idiot who trained this one that dropped me in front of a tempered Brachydios in the middle of the Elder's Recess?! Raider Ride is weird, too, but I don't usually use it. Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne: The Amala Network is just weird. Ignoring that the first time Hijiri send you in and you have to walk to Ginza, this is basically a teleport through the Amala Universe equivalent of the internet. Data transfers and apparently demons can easily glide through here, provided some jackass doesn't screw you over and leave you to deal with that damnable Specter.

@@marhawkman303 The vending machines are specifically mentioned as being outfitted with all of the custom components of a YoRHa unit (and only a YoRHa unit; other types of androids can't make use of the fast travel machines). When you fast travel it just straight-up disassembles the body at one end and reassembles it at the other. The question, of course, raised right out the gate by 9S having to be restored from backup after the prologue mission, is whether the unit created at the other side is a 'transfer' of consciousness or a copy where the original consciousness is destroyed in the process in order to prevent simultaneous activation of a single consciousness. Is any YoRHa unit actually the same one as when they were initially activated, or is the 2B you end the game on actually a third or fourth clone (assuming minimal use of the fast travel system; otherwise you may have iterated and consequently killed dozens of 2Bs through the course of your first playthrough)? Does it matter to anybody except the last iteration, being disassembled and decompiled (eg: killed) in order to allow another variant of consciousness to pass on? It's NieR: Automata. You don't fast travel by popping out of a vending machine, you fast travel by having an existential crisis.

Most of the time, the fast-ish travel is just unlocking new shortcuts with your new powers. The maps are fairly well designed, but if you're going for 100% collection, it's still obnoxious.

What about monster hunter world, the games version of fast travel is literally your hunter whistling and a pterodactyl like monster grabs you and your palico by its claws and carries you to your location. Not really the most odd one in gaming, but still entertaining to see in game.

@@Ceece20 In all fairness, the first Nier game *does* show that SPOILERS for Neir Gestalt/Replicant, which is getting a remake that's coming out soon) the technology that created the Androids of Nier Automata was basically so advanced as to be completely indistinguishable from magic, complete with spells (that were very similar to Automata's Pods' super attacks), human transmutation, and manipulating/creating souls on both individual and massive scales, so "magic" is probably a good answer.

How Sam and Max: The Devil's Playhouse? Your weird rabbity thing friend can use a children's toy phone to call another phone, and then you teleport to that phone's location. I think instant fast travel can be rationalized by your character just walking/running to there. Just progress the ingame clock a bit.
