I used to play flute/piccolo for the US Army Bands. I had a Mateki open hole B foot flute and a wood Zentner piccolo. Seems like EVERY concert that I played in ended with Stars & Stripes Forever!!! Brings back memories!!! I really wish that I had not sold my flute and piccolo…

Also those aren’t traditional marching band gloves. They just look like normal gloves because marching band gloves normally have grip to them so your finger doesn’t slide around.

Once again you did it thank you for a very insightful reviews of the glory piccolo. I also have bought one similar to this SLADE brand it’s also from China it has similar built quality. The only downside to this piccolo is that my little finger on my right hand Does get joint lock and mild pain if I was playing it for too long. In conclusion I’m in love with my first Picolo and I’m saving up for a better quality one.

After not playing regularly for just over 20 years, I've recently gotten involved in community bands and decided I should get a piccolo to increase my versatility. But like some of the reviews, I didn't want to make a significant investment, if it was going to turn out that I wasn't very good at it or didn't enjoy it. So, for fun, I got one of the blue ones! I think I got lucky because mine tunes fairly well and wasn't hard to play. My issue is/was that it's a bit slippery because of the coating and the keys have already begun tarnishing a bit. I've played it successfully in concerts, but I mostly use it for Pride parades and events because it's flashy. I was gifted a Gemeinhardt one that is now my primary one, but weird thing is that depending on the conditions, sometimes the cheap blue, Glory one plays easier or better. Idk how to explain it! Looking forward to checking out more of your videos!

I used to play flute more, but now my primary instrument is clarinet. However, occasionally in a parade I may need to play piccolo. I was thinking of getting one of these cheap ones to put in my bag with my clarinet “just in case.” I think I just may get one now. I won’t be playing it much.

Re: Some Amazon reviews: I am of the opinion that a good number of those instrument reviews are being posted by music instructors and shops. Those who might not appreciate anyone’s ability to buy instruments from Amazon because it digs a bit into their profits. I don’t think they care that eventually (if a person is willing to continue) that a higher quality instrument will be bought from them.

10:28 Trumpet Mellophone Clarinet Flute player. Those are the cheap gloves that come with the box I used to always give those to my auntie she would wear them to church. Lol if you want a good pair you’ll need to spend about 50-200 dollars. The really expensive ones have grips on the fingertips. However I have indeed met flute players that can play with those on no problem. They are indeed goats 🐐

I have a quick question, my dream is to play the flute and piccolo, I have also never played one either, so should I choose the Silver plated or Nickel platted?
@LanceSuzuki
2 жыл бұрын
If you are just starting out, I would start on flute, rather than piccolo. Nickel vs. Silver plated probably won't make much difference in the sound. However, some people have skin allergies to nickel. For those people, silver plated is a much better option.

I don't honestly think the gloves are for marching band. More likely they are conservators' gloves which would have been worn by operatives on the production line, to avoid smudging the instrument. Look up "caring for silver" and you'll see them worn in the process of cleaning silverware. My guess is they are included because the manufacturers acquire them very cheaply in bulk quantities. I think gloves for marching band would be of a superior quality. Just a guess. The attachment on the left-hand side of the flute is called a crutch. It's also found on bass flutes and bassoons. This instrument could be useful as a practice tool for the 3rd octave of flute, or altissimo range of saxophone.

I think it's better to get a nice instrument and pay the arm and leg for it. If you don't like the instrument, sell it to another person. It's such a pleasure to play a good instrument. A Yamaha or Pearl flute is worth paying between $700 - $1000.

If you don’t play piccolo much or only use it outdoors why pay a lot? As long as it plays relatively in tune and won’t fall apart, this seems like a good deal. However, you can get a used piccolo for $200 or so. I have two old Bundy piccolos. They aren’t great, but they get the job done. Plus, repair shops will work on them.

I had a question about piccolos and flutes: I want to learn how to play the piccolo and only the piccolo. Do I really have to take lessons to learn the flute beforehand or can I start off on piccolo?
@LanceSuzuki
2 жыл бұрын
While it’s certainly possible to only learn piccolo, I think it’s much easier to start on flute. Piccolo requires a bit more precision than flute…there’s a little more room in the flute to figure things out. If you want to play in an ensemble such as band/orchestra, it’s impossible to get by only playing piccolo. However, if it’s just for your enjoyment, it doesn’t hurt to try.

I notice a lot of the reviews of the cheap piccolos and flutes is that they are good for beginners. To me that is a big mistake to learn on a cheap instrument. It could very well discourage a beginner to play at all. Probably better to rent a better instrument to start with and if your student loves it you can buy something better.
@LanceSuzuki

Rental can be good. However, there is a wide range of quality in rental instruments. It is a toss up for me. Neither this instrument or a rental are meant to be long-term solutions.
