Thanks, very useful video. I was considering buying this dashcam for my second vehicle but very disappointed by this parking surveillance feature. I own a Thinkware dashcam and the surveillance is much much better: 1) no delay for surveillance start (cannot understand why 20/40/50 minutes before starting on the 70mai ? what is the point ?). 2) motion detection - very useful against vandalism, or just to record some suspect people around. 3) the camera starts recording 10 seconds before the event (pre-recording active) 4) hardwired - so no limitation in hours/days for the surveillance mode - excepted if car battery comes below a threshold (12.0v or similar - can be parametrized). Of course price is not the same...so I still need to think about it, but for me such a "surveillance" is useless as you mention in video.

Thanks for your comment and information. Where I live in Thailand I have a limited choice and I have never seen the models you mention on sale. The surveillance features you list look to be a lot better than the 70mai but, as you say, the price isn't the same and you can't expect a high feature set on a cheap camera. Regarding the delay, I guess it's so that closing doors won't trigger an incident, but the length of delay is excessive. If parking surveillance is very important to you, it probably isn't the right dash cam. For me, it's not that important and I'm still pleased with the 70mai because it does what I want it to do.

Does Parking Surveillance mode only record when it detects a collision? If it is constantly recording, it will drain the battery. If it only works for 20 minutes, that's not good too.
@PhilUKNet
6 ай бұрын
Yes and no. When in parking surveillance mode, it goes into a monitoring mode which uses a small amount of battery power. If the accelerometer detects an impact, it starts the camera recording and this uses a lot of battery power. If you are just relying on the internal battery, this won't last very long when recording before it is empty. I am using an early version of the firmware. 70mai changed the firmware in later versions so that parking surveillance mode could only be used when their hardwire kit was used. When the camera has the hardwire kit attached and is taking power from the car battery, it can record for a lot longer. I don't have the hardwire kit, but I believe that it monitors the car battery level and switches off the camera when the level gets too low so that it doesn't drain the battery.

According to some reviews I've seen, if the camera senses a collision while in parking mode, it can take up to 10 seconds on average for the camera to start recording video, which is a bad amount of time. How long is this time on your camera?

@@TurgineerI have never actually used it. I did some testing when I made videos, but that was only time I have used it. One problem is that the G-sensor isn't very sensitive. Most dings I have received in car parks have been on the side of the car, out of sight of the camera. Thirdly, where I am in Thailand, I know that the police and insurance company wouldn't be interested if I tried to present them with a parking video. I don't find parking surveillance or ADAS useful. Hey Phil, I just wanna check with you. That option for 20/30/40 is for when you shut down your car, the camera continues recording for 20 minutes just like you're driving. Only after that 20 minutes, it goes into surveillance mode. I was checking the timing for the footage after I shut down my car, and it seems like it
@PhilUKNet

When the cam is recording a green light is illuminated. When I turn off the car 12V power to the cam it doesn't continue recording, it just switches off and the light goes out. When I made the video - quite some time ago - the information for this option confused me: "If the cigarette lighter port is still power-on after the car is stopped, the device will enter the parking surveillance mode after parking for 20 minutes. In this case, the parking surveillance function will consume the battery power. If the car does not run for a long time, the battery may be depleted. In this case, it is recommended to use the parking surveillance function in conjunction with the parking surveillance cable." This doesn't say anything about the cam continuing to record after stopping the car. It also implies there is a difference in the way it behaves depending on whether it is attached to the car 12V supply. Some 12V ports stay live when the ignition is off, but some don't. It's not clear (to me) but it seems to imply there is a 20 minute delay after parking the car before it enters parking surveillance mode. I did actually do some testing a while back and what I observed followed my assumptions. If you set the delay to different values and cause a parking event, nothing will be recorded if the event occurs before the end of the delay time. I now wish I had never mentioned this option on the video! This one little option causes more controversy than anything else. I don't actually find parking surveillance useful and therefore don't use it. Are you using the 70mai dash cam pro or dash cam lite? They look similar, but there are some differences. With my dash cam pro I have never seen GPS information in the recorded videos. Some people tell me they have, but I think they are using the dash cam lite.

@@PhilUKNet well just maybe my car still supplies 12v power after shutting down the engine. It's so weird, I'd think that the internal battery wouldn't be able to record that long. Is it possible for you to do this test? Hi, I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the French language - just English and Thai! However, I put your comment through a translator and I get the idea. I use the 70mai Pro in my car. My wife's car has a 70mai A800, but it has no power when the ignition is off therefore she never uses parking mode. You're right about the delay. When you enable parking mode and switch off the camera the A800 waits 5 minutes to enter parking mode so that there are no false events. To test it you should use high sensitivity. When a parking event is triggered, the camera shouldn't switch on permanently. It should record a video the same length as you have specified in the options - 1, 2 or 3 minutes. If a parking event is triggered, when you turn on the camera again it should tell you there has been a parking event and the video should be in the parking folder. From what you describe, this isn't the case. When I first got my 70mai Pro I did some experiments with parking mode, but when I installed an A800 in my wife's car I didn't play around with parking mode because I knew she wouldn't be using it. I'm therefore not very familiar with parking mode on the A800, but it should be very similar to the Pro. She is working tomorrow and will take her car so I won't be able to check tomorrow, however, if I have time later I will try a little experiment with her A800 and will let you know what I find.

It doesn't work very well, I'm afraid. I don't actually use parking mode because I don't find it useful, but during my testing I set the sensitivity to high and had the same problem. To trigger a parking event I had to slam a door quite hard or tap the actual camera. Other people have said the same thing. The sensitivity setting for parking and sensitivity setting for collisions can be set independently. As I said, with parking mode set to high sensitivity it doesn't always trigger a video when the car is hit. I bought a 70mai A800 for my wife's car and that has the opposite problem. Originally I set the emergency event sensitivity to high, but every time my wife drove over a bump in the road it triggered an emergency event. I therefore changed it to low sensitivity to stop this happening, but in the event of a genuine collision it may now not trigger. My personal opinion of 70mai dash cams is that they are good basic cameras with decent image quality at a very competitive price. However, the extra functionality - ADAS and parking surveillance - are of very little use. In comments I have received lot of people complain about parking surveillance, but if you want a camera with good parking surveillance you will have to buy something else - and probably spend quite a lot more money.

There's no option to turn voice control off, but I've never found it to be a problem. If you say 'Record video' or 'Take picture' in normal conversation the dash cam would obey, but I've never known this to happen. It's a small issue, but ideally 70mai could provide an option to turn it on and off in a future firmware update. One camera can't support another camera, as far as I'm aware. You can have two cameras, of course, but they will work independently of each other. You open the app and connect it to your dash cam via the Wi-Fi hotspot. I only have one dash cam so I only ever see one camera to connect to, but presumably if you have two you will see two on the app and you will then be able to select which one you want to connect to.

When I went into the file system I only found front and rear sub-folders for the normal video. The parking and event folders just had a single folder for the front camera. Upon realising this I was very disappointed. Now, since I checked it's possible that 70mai have updated the firmware to record both front and rear. But, to be honest, I have virtually given up with 70mai and I don't bother with firmware updates any more. I waited a very long time for a firmware update that added GPS data to the video for the 70mai Pro, but it never came. The company only seems to be interested in releasing and selling new products, not supporting and improving existing products. In summary, when I last checked the answer to your question is no, but this could have changed if they have updated the firmware.

hi..thks for the vid. but why after i have set it to 20 mins but my 70mai pro still starts recording parking even before the set time after i open & close the car doors?

I'm not sure. This setting has caused quite a lot of controversy so some time ago I did some tests and it seemed to be working how I thought. This is what I think you are doing. Am I correct? You enable parking surveillance, set the duration to 20 minutes and turn off the camera. Once it camera shuts down you slam a door or something before 20 minutes to cause a parking event. When you turn the camera back on it tells you there has been a parking incident and you have a new video with a P for parking. Is this right? If not, please explain the steps you take. 70mai improved things with the new A800 4k dash cam. You no longer get the 20, 30, 40 or 50 minute option. Instead, when you enable parking surveillance and turn off the camera it simply tells you that parking surveillance will become active after 5 minutes. This is much better than the 70mai Pro.

@@janssencheah8073 Since getting the new 70mai A800 recently I think I may have got it wrong with the 70mai Pro. However, this isn't entirely my fault because the 70mai Pro user documentation doesn't tell you anything and you have to guess. With the A800 they have changed the wording on the menu and it is a lot clearer. The 70mai Pro menu/documentation is very vague and ambiguous. In the past I have received a few comments regarding my interpretation of that option. What it seems to be is an option to automatically turn off the dash cam if you leave it switched on AND if you have an external power supply, ie, it is connected to the car battery when the ignition is off. If you turn off the ignition off and leave the dash cam on with parking surveillance enabled the cam will turn itself off and go into parking mode after the set time. After the dash cam turns off (manually or automatically) I'm not sure how long it waits before it goes into parking mode. The A800 clearly states 5 minutes, but there is nothing in the 70mai Pro documentation. So, in summary, what you are seeing with your cam is probably correct. The 20, 30, 40, 50 minute option isn't the delay for when parking mode starts, it is the delay after which the cam will turn itself off after stopping the car if the cam is connected to an external supply. Very confusing. 70mai is very weak with certain things, and one of these things is documentation. I'm glad to see they have improved the menu wording with the 70mai A800. They should do the same thing with the Pro and make a firmware update. Another example is the option to disable recording. Someone asked me why they would want to disable recording. This option is actually for audio recording and if 70mai had described it as 'Audio recording' instead of just 'Recording' there wouldn't be any confusion.

Does it mean It is not going to record for these 20 minutes at all? Or is it going to record in normal mode? Can be an issue if it makes such "blind time"

Good question and the honest answer is I don't know. Here's what the user guide says: "If the cigarette lighter port is still power-on after the car is stopped, the device will enter the parking surveillance mode after parking for 20 minutes. In this case, the parking surveillance function will consume the battery power. If the car does not run for a long time, the battery may be depleted. In this case, it is recommended to use the parking surveillance function in conjunction with the parking surveillance cable." I don't really understand what this means and I assumed that there was a 20/30/40/50 minute delay after turning off the power to the dash cam. It does say that the device will enter the parking surveillance mode after parking for 20 minutes. I thought the purpose of this was to give you time to get out of the car to avoid triggering a false parking event. However, two people left comments recently saying that this wasn't the case and that my assumption was wrong. They say that parking mode activates immediately. I may indeed be wrong and if that is the case it makes me feel bad for giving misleading information, but I couldn't understand the manual. I guess that the original manual was written in Chinese and it has just been put through an automated translation program. At some stage I will try to do some testing to figure it out, but I've been very busy and haven't had time.

@@PhilUKNet Is collision detected when you close the door after parking? I had heard it before that closing the door causes problem.
@PhilUKNet
4 жыл бұрын
@@tomaszjakubowski3922 There are two settings for sensitivity. I have mine set to high and closing the door is detected. I don't find parking surveillance particularly useful, but when I have used it there is always an event detected when I return to the car. This is always the event that was triggered by me closing the door and not a real parking event. I haven't experimented, but if you set the sensitivity to low and close the door very softly it may not be detected.

Hi thanks for the video. I have a question, do I need to hardwire the dashcam to enable the surveilance mode?
@PhilUKNet
4 жыл бұрын
You don't need to, but the camera only has a 500 mAh battery and you won't get a lot of recording time. If you leave the car for a day or two and there are few incidents it will be OK. If you leave it in an airport car park for a couple of weeks and there are lots of parking incidents then the battery probably won't last. But it will work standalone without being hardwired.

Hello and thank you for the video! Do you know if the parking sensor will detect if someone tries to loosen the lug nuts of your tire?
@PhilUKNet
3 жыл бұрын
It uses an accelerometer (G sensor), which senses changes in direction. In the event of a collision the vehicle will decelerate rapidly causing the G sensor to record an emergency video. In parking mode the vehicle is stationary and if another vehicle hits your car it will cause motion that (hopefully) will trigger the G sensor and record a parking video. There are two sensitivity settings - high and low - but if someone vandalises your car or attempts to steal the wheels they may not create enough motion to trigger the sensor. This is also the case with low impact parking incidents. If someone attempts to remove the lug nuts I would not expect this to be detected. The other problem is that if you just have one camera it will normally be mounted on the windscreen facing forward. Even if someone tried to steal the wheels and a video was recorded the video would only record the front of the car and you wouldn't actually see the thief working on the wheels.

Thanks. I plan to purchase a double dash cam and fix the second one on the front window but facing inside the vehicle so the side windows are also recorded. The thing is I am still unsure if the 70mai will record a vandalism event like loosening my nuts. When you made the test with the car bonnet opening it didn't look like you made a big impact but the camera still recorded the moment from the opening of the bonnet. I though that the pressure of someone trying to loosen the lug nuts could be registered but you say it probably won't. On the other hand, the other more sophisticated dash cams like provide the so called "state-of-the-art" technology when the camera captures every motion but actually records only when an impact happens and keeps the record some seconds before the event started happening. My car is not on a garage, it stays on an open parking and a lot of people are going around regularly. So that should mean that this other camera should be recording almost all the time during the day, which also make me wondering how practical would this be regarding the car battery.

@@van_k It's a bit inconsistent. When I was doing some tests I sometimes had to slam the door or bonnet really hard to trigger it. However, I put an A800 in my wife's car and it records an emergency event every time she drives over a bump. I had to change the sensitivity on her camera to low. You highlighted another 'problem' with the 70mai in that it doesn't record anything before the impact. I don't keep up with technology so I'm not aware of what else is available, but the best I've seen is the system on Teslas. However, buying a Tesla isn't exactly cheap! If you're worried about running your battery down it might be worth installing a hardwire kit. These monitor the battery voltage and if it gets too low the power to the camera will be cut so you can start the car.

Yes, I plan to hardwire the dash cam whether it's 70mai or another brand. I actually thought that 70mai does not work on parking mode if it is not hardwired. Still, it doesn't sound very convenient if a motion sensor drains the car battery to minimum almost daily. Thanks again.
