nice projects as usual. I have a few tips for you: - don't try to fix the wet wall of the skatchy ruin from the inside. if you want to work against the water you have to make the outer side of it waterproof. i don't know what sustainable material to use besides bitumen. you can paint the inside of the wall with chalk. it is good for humidity and against mold. - take the soil from the lagune to fertalize your fruit trees. you can also use coal and ash to better the ground. you can make coal from the mimosa trees and other fires to make terra preta. The amazonas used to be a big planted garden for the natives

I recommend filling in time between these longer videos with 1-2 minute ones like 'Day in the life' or 'Pros vs cons' to gain more casual views to lead up to 1million. I think people need to see this as a healthy combination of primitive and tech-augmented life styles that don't go too far one way or the other and finds that right balance. I'd love to see a video where each volunteer gives their take after living there for some time.

I just want to give some advice. when you are going to put more depth in the waterfall area, do not forget to check the rigidity of the wall. more water more force on the wall. just to avoid problems. maybe it doesn't even fall off at first but in the long run it can become worrying. sorry for my english.

It's very refreshing to see you spread the message about fires and how important they are. Being from Portugal sometimes people turn away from the hard work that is essential to keep the spaces fireproof and prefer to focus on other things and then just hope that their space doesn't end up burning down, which is happening more and more with Portugal (sadly) breaking records of total area burnt with every new year. I wish you all the success and once again thank you for spreading the message that these kinds of projects isn't all renovating houses and building cool spaces, sometimes the dirty work (choppy invasive trees, cleaning the forest) also takes a lot of time but it is also very essential to the wellbeing of the projects.

About the plant at 7:47 and fire resilience - this bush is a native plant to Ireland and called Gorse! Also known as Irish Fence and sometimes referred to as Phoenix Plant. Because of all the oils in the plant it burns incredibly well and it's seeds a fire resilient too! So whenever there is a forest fire it's one of the first plants to pop up, since it thrives in a post-wildfire environment. BUT it is a very useful plant (for where it's native) as it is a nitrogen fixing plant. It will restore soil health, offers shelter and a food source for bees and birds and is home to Irelands only reptile species! The bright yellow flowers will bloom early in the year and have a pleasant, almost coconutty fragrance. The blossoms are also edible for humans! The trick with getting rid of Gorse is SHADE. They only really grow in direct sunlight and love somewhat depleted soil. If you want to make sure they disappear and don't return, let larger trees outgrow them. Once they stand in a larger trees shade, they die.

Every time i see the veranda at the small "ruin" in my imagniation i see someone slip and die falling down of the Veranda. This is a totally unnecessary risk of bad accidents and heavy injuries. PLEASE change that asap.

For the Pond You can use a Geosynthetik Clay Liner as a cheap (1-3€/m2) and more or less sustainable waterproof layer. The process of building is easy - 1. Dig out and conture the Swamp using an excavator 2. Dig out a shovel deep surrounding trench 3. Create a overflow prevention (160mm plastik pipe sticking up of an 90° elbow cut 10cm below maximum fill level would be enough) 4. Roll out the GCL (overlap as per instructions of the GCL, add a layer of Bentonite) cut after the trench 5. Put a ~10-15cm layer of the excavated dirt on top of the GCL and stomp it in a little (especially in the trench) 6. Fill with water GCL Liners are used for all kinds of water management, from Landfills to dams, they hold centuries, if maintained correctly. Easy, quick, cheap and somewhat sustainable. Check out Ridgedale Permaculture, they have a great video ( search Ridgedale GCL LINED POND) with instructions of a pond they created this way.

Very important for the pond is to make sure you clear 2/3 of the length of the highest tree around the pond for enough light to get in there (if I remember correctly from my classes years ago) and make sure to have 1 gently sloping end facing the north so it can heat up when the sun is on the south, and one side more steep on the other side. (I might have remembered opposite so you might need to look into it, nature preservation weren't my most favourite classes, i preferred sustainability)

For the pond you should probably look into the keyline system. Interedting concepts are in books written by Bill mollison like the introduction to permaculture and maybe sepp holzer permaculture guide or a guide to homescale permaculture handbook. This also combines the use of ponds for aquatic food production, fire fighting or recreation with other uses and provides info on the best ways to couple them to the other systems. Another idea , when you're going to clear al those trees, use them in HugelKultur. This saves you on compost and tilling or fill in raised beds or in oechards etc while also creating a fire resilient zone. Also much to be read about stuff like this in the previously mentioned books. A worthwile read that can provide with tons of info about just about everything your trying to achieve with this project.

Get a petrol powered fire fighting pump. Also build a water tank at the highest point of the property. Then you can pump water up and gravity feed it down when needed. Install agricultural sprinklers on the top of your buildings. When a fire comes through, start the sprinklers and wet the area down. It works.

Major and minor projects. 7 to 8 months to complete with 20 to 25 people. So now you need to add critical path timeline & resources to each. The first group will probably revolve around the camp improvements: parking, camping, sleeping, eating, washroom, kitchen roof shed, container tools and material storage. Next group might be the small ruin upgrades: upper level bathroom/veranda sun shade/railing; lower level waterproofing, lower level floor and wall leveling/heating/electrical/wall finish - breathable hemp limecrete mix. Maybe a shaded outdoor recreational area. Fire proofing and bush clearance around the ruin. Possibly some roof rain water run off, large tank storage collection/distribution. Opportunity to create a large in ground pool/pond on the lower side. Power generation: solar, wind, other (expensive - geothermal - circulating gravity heat/cooling pumps; recirculating hydro power from artificial stream or pond). Project fillers: land fire proofing especiallyby the neighbor's eucalyptus trees, stream clearance and development, fruit tree & indigenous tree planting, pond/swamp upgrades (clearing, widening, deeping, swimming, rest area), well upgrades, waterfall/lagoon development and upgrades.

Looking forward to this new season. While there won't be much food production development, I was also thinking about food shrubs as well as the trees. Like blueberry, hazelnut, etc. Might be a good idea to throw them into the mix if they will grow there well enough in that area. I was also thinking about asparagus since it takes a few good years to get going. The rocky area that needs fire prevention could probably host some food plants in some little terraced areas, eventually. Long term ideas for you guys to throw in the lists of dreams. 😊 Food should always grow where people hang out and travel along, so it will always been taken care of. It also wouldn't hurt to see what the neighbours/larger community has to dig up and share. It is amazing what you can get for free.

hi, when u dig out the water reservoir, 1. make sure to strengthen the dam wall. the dipper the water gets the more pressure it will exert on the side wall and u dont want it to collapse. B. open a tube hole at the bottom of it and use the water pressure for a turbine for electricity during winter when there is less sun due to cloudy weather. hydraulic power is cheap an will use the water that run any way in your water system for most of the year.

I think the pond could use some filtering plants! Algae (at least where I'm from) can be toxic and deadly for dogs, and filtering plants can seriously mitigate the algae buildup. Having the pond connect to the creek so that the water is constantly moving is another major helper, but rebalancing the ecosystem a bit with filtering plants could be a good idea!
