I had forgotten that I subscribed to you for your model airplane assembly vids. it's a shame how the youtube algorithm suppresses small channels in your feed, even if you are already subscribed. great video by the way!

The 'drone' in this incident was flying for 70+ minutes? Was there a description of the drone (i.e. fixed wing or multi-rotor)? I might have to call BS on this one. I suspect there are times that full scale pilots are reporting encounters with 'drones' that contain information that is false. Whether that is done on purpose or not I can't say.

Esteban: The drone was originally spotted by police on the ground, and confirmed by two separate helicopter crews. Will have to wait for the final FBI investigation report to confirm all this. Tim

Don't forget this thing was flying at 14,000 feet. According the ATC they "assumed it was a drone." No video footage to back up the account even though the helicopters involved would have been equipped to record this thing. And remember when the planet Jupiter was mistaken by a police officer for a drone that was following her? Davis Monthan AFB is right there. Much more believable that a military aircraft was involved yet the FAA wants to hold onto some BS story about a mystery drone to further villainize the drone/RC community. Maybe it was another tic-tac. There are plenty of cases of dummies out there with drones. This isn't one of those cases.

Will need to wait for the report. Having spent 27 years in the USAF, we just did not fly through airspace illegally. And if some special classified program, simply stay in Restricted airspace. Tim

To let you know, Arizona TV news channels' reports cited speeds of 100 against a 40mph headwind for a duration of an hour or more, said nothing about it disappearing into a cloud, but said instead that it headed high over Mt. Lemmon at altitudes of 14,000', Mt. Lemmon being just over 9,000'. They also showed parts of the police report, photographically, and they said it was not visible through infrared goggles, that they weren't completely sure of what it was because they couldn't see it above them, but that they saw a green light on its belly. Your statements here are different. It was not suggested to be as you're suggesting, not privately piloted, but instead as much higher tech, not civilian.

Informative video. Too bad it was only a $500 fine. He should have to pay for the damages he caused to the helicopter too. It would have set a good precedence.

The common part of all the stories is these aren't modelers committing these unsafe operations. They are people using RC as a tool not a hobby.

Is control line flying and free flight exempt from the new regulations?
@TimMcKay56
3 жыл бұрын
Thomas: That is an interesting question, not sure the FAA has really answered yet. The entire idea of the UAV regulations is for unmanned aircraft flying in the National Airspace System to be identified to enhance the safety of everyone flying. Recall that there is no need to register aircraft weighing less than 0.55 lbs. As control line models are always within 100 feet of the pilot, I'd imagine they do not need to be registered. A free flight model, weighing over 0.55 lbs might need to be registered. Questions like this with new FAA regulations come up all the time. As the FAA progresses with this, AMA will likely ask the question on FF and control line, FAA will produce an Advisory Circular with their interpretation. Tim

Hey Tim, I understand how hobbyists can be frustrated by this sort of news coming around and making us look bad. But aren't you concerned by the prospect that this was not a hobbyist drone? Thanks for your awesome and informative video

Exactly what I was going to say 99.9% of the problems are with photography drones like a DJI. We wonder why the FAA put model aircraft in with drones I suspect had lot to do with commercial drone delivery. Lot of back-room discussion look at the initial release of the NPRM basically eventually forced RC club fields to be shut down along with an expensive network based RID system. The goal is to force out the hobbyist from the 0-400-foot level so they can have that airspace for drone delivery. If you add enough burden, it will cause the RC industry to die off. They backed off the eventual closure of the FRIA and went to a broadcast RID left the door open for network RID. Now were hearing that club fields are having a tough time getting approval from the FAA.

My fastest quadcopter can go 100 mph. But the battery lasts about 4 min. There is no way this was any kind of hobby drone. Even the best Dji drones won't fly that fast for very long. All these problems have been created by GPS drones. The real quadcopter pilots don't use GPS. Gps drones can be flown by a complete bozo. Most of these people have never even flown a plane. Really like seeing all those planes on your channel.
