Hey my friend! I have some questions concerning your foundry. How many burn hours does one gas bottle last? And which burner do you use? Did you made it by yourself? Also I have several metres of copper cable laying around at home. The cable consists out of 4 or 5 smaller ones all contained inside of some big insolation. What do you think is the easiest way to get rid of that insolation to melt the copper? Btw, great video as always! I love the style only with the background noises out of your workshop!👍🏼👌🏼
@bigstackD
6 жыл бұрын
Are use an 8.5 kg propane barbecue gas bottle I get about four hours of full melting temperatures from it so I could do approx 4 copper melts 5 Aluminium brass melts 6 Brass melts or around 10 aluminium melts from one bottle. I got the burner from eBay off a guy in Lithuania. He sells full furnaces at a reasonable price and they are a shitload better than mine when it comes to melting quickly. A lot of people don’t recommend burning the plastic insolation off of copper wire especially if you live in suburbia but that’s what I would do if stripping it with a razor blade is not an option. At the end of the day any crap that is left behind will float on top of the molten copper and can be easily skimmed off so you have pure copper and no impurities in there( As long as you have a clean Crucible and give it a careful stir and skim properly)😁👍🏻
@bigstackD
6 жыл бұрын
I can send you the link for the burner if you are interested .? Alot of the melting times also has a lot to do with the furnace size the chamber and crucible size and how well the furnace is built.

Yes I have tried adding even the tiniest bit of air to this burner and unfortunately it doesn’t work . the second I put any additional air in the burner starts having a hissy fit and can’t have a continual strong flame, i’m assuming it’s just the way the burner was made 🤷🏻♂️👍🏻

Have you ever thought of investing in one of those mini steel forges? There huge with a tiny capacity so it'd take up a lot of space, maybe backyard outdoor equipment, just enough to fit a brake drum and can melt steel, not portable either, you put your cast under the crucible and turn the crucible from the side with a wheel. You can also use it you melt other metals too! And a lot are electronic temperature controls!

All my aluminium bronze I make is copper 90% to aluminium 10% by weight. It comes out just like brass so golden and shiny and extremely strong. You can pour higher than the mold should allow because of aluminium's high surface tension, not the oxidation layer.

@Jordan-rb28

bigstackD Casting you know it, that's why casting aluminum isn't much fun. I think I heard from somebody that alloying about 5-10% by weight copper to aluminium gives a "casting aluminium" alloy which reduces that surface tension massively and also reduces shrinkage by about 75% or more. Its definitely something to do some research on honestly, I'd really like to see you try it.

10% copper - 90% Aluminium damn that would melt bloody quick . Yeah I’ll definitely try that in a future video 👍🏻. Ide do a 10% 20% 30% Copper etc and then test the strength with a big bloody hammer or talk the guy at work into letting me use the hydraulic press maybe 🤔

bigstackD Casting sounds cool to me - but my main point is that a small amount of copper added to aluminium makes it cast better than just about any scrap you can melt.

Nice looking bars and that mold is my favorite mold that you use. Do you know Brady Schwartz the one that comments on every video that you post well that would be my second channel. I just got braces in my teeth yesterday and I want them out I have to have them in for 2 years and I don't know if I'll get used to them.

Never had braces so couldn’t offer any advice. Although I did see the comment to CaptainJerk that you got them. My sister had braces and she hated them but did eventually get used to them trust me if they put braces on you need them and you will be happy you did it in a couple of years I can assure you 😁👍🏻

I dont know a thing about smelting/melting, but i sure do enjoy your stuff. Maybe a stupid Q, but have you ever just mixed all your metals together into an ingot ? See what you get ? Franken-Ingot ?

Hey man great video as always! Just wondering if you by any chance wanted a heap of old shotgun shell hulls to melt? I'll happily send them over to you as they're taking up room in the shotgun shell box, I find a lot of them metal detecting. They were all made before 1960 so there's no plastic, should just be all brass. If you're interested let me know and I'll email you some photos or something before I send them :D I have a few handfuls so I think you'll get a cool ingot from it

Matey I would love nothing better than to melt some stuff my subscribers have sent me unfortunately if you’re in the states or overseas and not in Australia customs are very strict on sending even empty casings or even fake bullets Or anything similar. One of my subscribers tried to send me a big pile of brass bullet casings And customs shut him down quick smart no idea why as they were all crushed and un usable but they just didn’t let them through. 🤷🏻♂️ . So if you’re in Australia we can definitely sort something out but unfortunately if you’re overseas as much as I want them you’re only gonna waste your time because they won’t get to me. ☹️👍🏻
