Great breakdown. I'm coaching U9 this year and this will be one of the practice talks.

Is better if you use your defender as support and play a 1 - 3 - 2 on attack when your winger pushes up.... Hey at least that is my opinion. I like to play attacking football. I teach my 6 year olds to play like that. Once they get it and play official 7v7 games we going to be balling. So to recap. Everything this guy said except, when your winger pushes high with the ball, the same side defender covers the space behind him to play support and change the point of attack. Your defender needs to understand the instructions though, support can only have 2 touches and change the point of attack. He could never driblle, because if they steal it you're faced with an ugly counter attack of 2v1, 3v1 or even 4v1.....

Not well for any players over U10s I rather use my triangles in attacking and quicker defending in closing gaps!

Awful instructions. You want your back 2 and wide players to go as wide as possible? That would be playing in straight lines, which isn’t great. You also want all your team to drop in but your striker doing doggies side to side? If you drop in your whole team drops in. If you press you all press. 2-2-2 when you have the ball? Is just stupid and over complicates 7aside football for young players. If your wide player has the ball your opposite wide player should attack the back post. Sorry he isn’t an an elite coach.

I agree, there are no layers...just lines to break. and I would NEVER have my U9 defender think he can leave the zone to "go score" haha!

why do I want my defender working up the field "trying to score a goal". know your job and own it. I would be very much against my defender moving out of zone b/c they felt they were in position to score. I'm hard pressed that U9 kids know enough to cover a defensive gap from midfield in the moment.
