I can imagine being in Claire’s shoes. She was hitting a great ball and that guy kept on flying back and forth and getting everything back. It is so frustrating to play against those players. Fantastic match by both, and I’m still in awe how I’ve never seen Claire hit a slow, rally ball.

great match! Ryan had a huge advantage with his serve, getting 5 "free points" 77% 1st serve %, 61% of 1st serves won, 71% of 2nd serves won. Claire struggled a bit with 47% 1st serve %, 44% of 1st serve won, 28% of 2nd serves won (3 Double faults). Claire had more unforced errors, specifically on the 3rd shot (serve+1) where she won 1 but lost 7 points. Once rallies got past 4 shots the outcome was fairly even. Interestingly, Claire had 13 pressure points (points leading to a break point) but only converted 2 to a breakpoint and none to a break. Ryan had 9 pressure points, converted 6 to break points and 4 into breaks.

I think Ryan makes a lot of people have a "bad day". His defense is superb. Claire hit a lot of balls that would be winners against most other players...sometimes two or three in one rally...but Ryan just kept neutralizing them with his quickness, topspin, and anticipation. Two things I would suggest to Claire: 1)If you face such a good defender, sometimes it's best to mix the speed of your shots...slow one down while he's scrambling, because it can throw off his timing. A neutral slice down the middle when he's anticipating something big. This will tend to take out his legs, and save yours. Short slices that bring him in also make him work harder and give him a different look. Don't let yourself feel pressured into thinking that you HAVE to hit a winner...think about how to make him work, and yourself not work so hard.

Great playing from both players. Seemed to me as the match went on Claire must have felt the need to go bigger and this is a double edged sword because any mistakes will give Ryan an advantage in score and add even more score pressure to Claire having to decide to go aggressive or try to stay more conservative. It's easy to say hit more neutral cross court or middle shots when I am a spectator, because the more competitive the player the more he or she will try to analyze and adjust strategies especially when behind in a score and knowing it is being recorded as well. Just my 2 cents 🤙

Great series Winston! Both players are great tennis players and could definitely notice Ryan's ball jumping up on Claire. Love that you are promoting UTR as well. It's a great tool that all players in tennis can use...rec and competitive. Even though it was 8-1, I think the match was closer than the score showed. Ryan did an amazing job of using Claire's pace and making her hit another shot. True counter punching and there was no need to change his strategy. Claire gave away a few to many points early on with UF errors and doubles, but she picked it up big time the last half of the pro set. If you watch this match it's a great example of how you need to be a solution finder when playing a match. Ryan found a solution early on and Claire struggled to find one with her tools. I would have loved to see her come to the net more, play more angles to his BH and maybe draw Ryan into the net. That last one is tougher if you don't have a chip slice or play with slower topspin. I think Ryan is very comfortable being 10 ft behind the baseline and she needed to get him out of his comfort zone. Great hitting though! Side note: Your scoreboard rocks....what are you using for that?

If she were actually "much better than the score" she would have won the match. Sure, she has great form and great ground strokes but the score doesn't lie at the end of the day. Ryan's modern forehand is pretty lethal. his whip generates so much energy, ball jumps off so lively. HIs range of movement also discouraged Claire as he was able to reflect most of her winning shots, forcing her to hit more close to line shots which many of them went out. If she made a few of those, the match would have been much closer and possibly changed the outcome. That's my analysis.
@maxpowers4436

I mean his forehand isnt more modern than anything in the last 20 years but he does have good acceleration. I assume by modern you mean the high elbow racket in takeback some reason that's thought of new but plenty of players had it in the 80s including Ivan Lendl
@alani3992

He is relying on constant western-grip RPM using his body strength to swing hard, while her FH gives less margin for error, & loses shape on tough balls. She could have changed direction using high ball to BH, but seemed to lack variety like spin changes or slices.

@@maxpowers4436 i think definition of modern fh is kinda vague, but you are right, i was referring to his high elbow position to great body rotation to flip the racket head like a spring for a great racket head acceleration which maximizes the whipping action with great torque. I think it may have been used before, but i think emphasis on it is greater nowadays, with more people favoring SW or FW grip for more spin.

Ryan needs to take balls earlier and rob his opponents of time. He stands so far back it's almost impossible for him to be offensive. Claire was serving pretty horribly and her second serve just hangs there begging to be attacked but he never did. Ryan won zero points at the net on zero approaches. Claire approached the net a couple times but it was evident she was not comfortable there and had difficulty putting easy volleys away. It was entertaining though.

Their match analysis afterwards are things hear all the time from other players regarding the difference in game styles. I truly think if high level female players hit against the heavy spin ball more regularly, they wouldn’t have the same timing issues. Because that’s really all it was here, in addition to his movement/court coverage. Claire’s contact point, footwork, and body positioning were just about 5-10% off, which led to the unforced errors and lower rally tolerance. If these two hit on a more regular basis, the score would be closer.

Seemed pretty obvious to me quickly that Claire should be pounding Ryan's backhand. Then, once he adjusts by running around his backhand and opening up the court, keep him honest and play to the open court on the forehand side. Second, Ryan seemed happy to stand way behind the baseline to hit safe looping shots. Claire should bring him in and also play more angles. I'd probably tell Claire that her serve toss is too high creating inconsistencies. Ryan hits his serve at its apex. Much more consistent. I'm a little high and just wanted to share my perception of the match, not saying it's truth or trying to give advice or any of that shit: Didn't have a good feel for it at the start, but by the middle of the third game. tactically, it felt like a case of whether or not Claire was able to start the point off from a slightly above neutral position or better, and then be able to hit aggressively to large targets and almost always to Ryan's backhand. Starting off better than neutral was hard due to Ryan's wonderful service motion and very impressive serve for his height. If the rally was in a neutral or slightly advantageous state for Ryan, it felt like relentless, heavy forehands took a grip on the rally, never letting go and allowing Claire to dictate the rally. I thought the biggest thing to avoid tactically is shots like 5:40. Claire hits an amazing short, off-speed forehand with enough angle to really stretch Ryan and get him out of position. Absolute prime position to punish a backhand to the backhand corner. Even if Ryan gets it back, it's either going to be a chance to finish into the open court, or if Ryan does really well and maintains a bit more neutrality, another chance to hit a punishing shot back at the backhand. Going behind Ryan feels a little greedy, hoping that he'll sprint to the open court instead of split stepping. And the point is over almost immediately, with a really good forehand from Ryan's better wing. And honestly, she honestly did a great job of this. That was really the only instance of that, for the most part. It just comes back to the main aspect of the match that I mentioned first; the starting point of the rally. I think they actually did a great job talking about this in their post-match talk. Ryan specifically mentions missing 3 backhands in a single game early on and wanting to hit all forehands from then, and how rushed he feels, and Claire talks about wanting to hit it to his backhand, but it just being hard to find an opportunity to do so. Most of the discussion was centered around the weight of shot, specifically Ryan's forehand, with the heavy spin which is not something girls/women face often. But I think it really started with the serve and return. Much like Ryan's forehand, his serve has a lot of spin and weight to it, and Claire was struggling to get into an offensive position off first or second serve on Ryan's serve. That's not surprising, on your opponent's serve. But Claire also started the rallies off from neutral or worse on her serve as well, which just makes things rough. It seemed like Ryan's 1st serve = advantageous for Ryan in general, Ryan's 2nd serve = mostly neutral or slight advantage to Ryan, sometimes advantage Claire. Claire's 1st serve = mostly neutral, and Claire's 2nd serve = mostly neutral, advantage for Ryan sometimes. Hard to play a match like that, where whoever is able to gain the first advantage in the rally snowballs the advantage just by the nature of the matchup, when almost all rallies are starting neutral or an advantage for Ryan after the serve/return on both players' serves. Idk why I typed so much, refer to the first 4 words I guess lol.

Yeah here in Sacramento can get to if you know 100° and you know got young guys would go out there thinking they can play a tournament and they overdo it and the guy had heat stroke and then he had to be taken by ambulance to used to Davis hospital where he's treated for heat exposure so even the young guys have to worry about overdoing it in 100° in these tournaments so you know it's a little bit concerned about the temperature of 122 degrees in Arizona and how that is going to affect a tennis players and you know basically what maybe a lot of the programs are in the winter time where the temperatures around 75 which might be pretty nice for the winter time actually so I guess it's the reverse's Sacramento you got mostly tennis in Arizona in the winter and then they probably go somewhere else for the summer I don't know but

Plenty of reason to do that. Some people just like to play that far behind the baseline catch things on the decline and grind. Its all play style dependent.

I feel so bad for Claire hitting like 20 winners less than a foot out, maybe even less than 8 inches out. She hits fast balls on great angles and is so close to the lines on many of her side line shots. Way closer of a game than the score shows in my opinion.
