In fact I have sneaked a tiny sumo privet into my collection. Nobody is more surprised than I am 😂 At the moment it looks like a potato with leaves sprouting out one end. I consider it therapy… Nice bit of material to work with there. Has super potential. This is going to be a great tree in no time at all. I think the front is definitely the initial front - it shows a strong profile, great taper and all that gnarly trunk and deadwood.

the privet we get here in the US never grow as thick as these you bonsai'ers get in the UK. even the 70/80 year old privet hedge we have growing next to our driveway are only thumb thick. id be very happy with a tree that is like this. nice work and great content as always xav. thank you and happy bonsai'ing

They look fantastic. As to the front, I think your first choice is the best. The other one seems to me to give the appearance of inverse taper. It's probably just the angle and I might be completely wrong!

Great stuff Xavier. Your rationale for carving and live vein preservation is awesome. Maybe one of your daughters will lend you her hairdryer next time you want to clean and dry out the inner workings. Set on cool air, should do the trick. BTW, not sure if you follow bonsai worx or not. You might be interested in episode entitles ''Bonsai Northwest Melbourne July 2024 Stephen Cullum Demonstration Styling natural looking trees'. Excellent discussion on styling all deciduous trees, not just Australian natives. Sound is a bit rough, so I used closed captions - really worth it!

I am with you I love privet and box as I think you know I have a number of them, you never know where the branches will pop out some you can use some you can’t,, impressed with you pruning my friend good profile after you did it. Nice bit of carving as you say it just needs refining, it’s not as easy as it looks mate, keep meaning to get a flame gun, wood preserver is important, I use super glue for that. The second tree I personally don’t like the second trunk at the front maybe if possible a bit of carving would help to make it a bit better, but it’s your tree Xav if your happy with it that’s all that matters, I need to tidy up my privets especially the larger one, they grow so quickly, have to get my son to lift it up for me as it heavy. All the best my friend, got some stuff to email you a bit later.

Agree totally about the 2nd stump. I mentioned that i had broken my little rotary tool so wasn't really able to do what i wanted with that. The nice thing is knowing I can go at it again when I have my equipment working. It is amazing just where some of the new shoots suddenly appear :)

Now I'm going to go looking for stumps to dig up 😁. I'm curious, on the bigger one, the knot on the right from the front you currently have, could that dead wood inside the knot go through to the hollow part in the back? Maybe it would be neat to be able to see through there?
