So.. first mistake was only getting one guinea pig. A really nice person on one of your videos explain to me no matter how much time you spend with your guinea pig it's not the same as having another guinea pig in the cage all the time. So I went back to the same breeder got another female. Within days you can see the change in my first guinea pig. She was happier, she ran around and played more. Even my husband was like they definitely need a friend.

One mistake you didn't touch on was putting a guinea pig, or more than one with a rabbit, thinking they would be buddies. Although sometimes they do get along, I have found it not a good idea. Some guinea pigs chewed on the ears of my rabbit and damaged them. Rabbits are also territorial and need their own kind, not another species for company. Rabbits are generally "cleaner" animals in that they toilet in one spot and avoid their sleeping quarters and guinea piggies, as much as we love them, just do it all over the place! even in their feed bowls. In general they just aren't happy together. I have been a purebred breeder of guinea pigs, and now just have them for pets and love. they have been great therapy for me in times of depression. I've made many mistakes during my years of owning them. Thanks for your video to educate people.

I got a single piggie from my cousin who got her from someone who couldn't move house and take her. My cousin struggled for 3 months to care for her before announcing she was rehoming her. Aunt told her to give her to a pet store. She wouldn't do it and said she cares for piggies for 12yrs so i trusted she just had too many to care for. I go to pick up the girl and my cousin says she cant care for TWO piggies its too much and plus the one she has is a 3yr old BOY. I cant do too much this last min but imma do my best to make sure this little girl enjoys life as mich as possible.

My guinea pig is currently a single guinea pig but that’s because my parents thought he would be ok with it. I taught them that we need to get another guinea pig and luckily I convinced them so he’s getting a friend very soon and I also convinced them to get a bigger cage so my guinea pig is going to be getting a 2x3 cage (it’s on it’s way) and a new friend 😊 Update: I got the new piggy. His name is Biscuit and they’re are best friends. My cage has updated to a 2x5 with a 2x2 loft so it’s way bigger then a small 2x3 and I can tell my piggies are way happier now

My first pet was a guinea pig I named Squeaky 💜 I was 5 and it was the 80's, so people weren't as aware of their needs, and I was 5 so.... 😥 my mother clearly didn't research them bc Squeaky was the only piggie and had no herd, and that was only the first mistake she made. Squeaky lived alone in a small glass fish tank for her whole 5 years of life.I still feel bad that it happened even though it wasn't my fault. I loved her so much and I take some comfort in that I was very sweet to her and did the most I could for her, like spent a lot of time with her and try to find her treats. I'm just glad that people are becoming more aware and that I have a happy healthy herd now that I know better💜

We've just lost one of our two sisters @5½ yrs. No signs of anything wrong. Just shocked to find her lifeless body in the back corner of their crate in the morning. Awh I'm so sorry to hear you lost a piggie, sometimes they do pass suddenly with no warning. Otherwise give her extra love and attention - but ideally she will be bonded with another pig ❤

I accidentally bought a pregnant female from my local pet shop. I literally didn't know she was pregnant until she gave birth, I thought she was just a very big guinea pig. She had 4 babies and looking back on it I'm surprised she lived through the process and literally all of the babies turned out 100% okay. I gave all the guinea pigs away because only 1 of her babies was a female and I wasn't keeping them in a suitable environment then. The mother, who I kept, was alone for a while but I prioritized to upgrade her cage and get her new penmates. It was definitely stressful knowing guinea pigs can fight and injure themselves if they don't get along. But I'm so relieved that I did take the leap because I now have a 5x2 cage for my herd of 3 girls. They've changed my life so much and I'm always looking for new ways to improve their living and find fun new enrichment ideas.

I agree, I think it truly depends on the piggy though, I had one by himself for a while because he was extremely mean to other piggies, constant rumbling, biting, nipping, food hogging. After 7 months I got him a partner he fully loved, finally. Had to have separate cages at night because I couldn’t supervise any bullying but they were in love. Best friends. Bonded. 4 years later, my grump passed… now my other piggy is by himself. I bought two new baby males, tried to pair them with him. They did really really good up until my two younger babies hit puberty… Even with big cages, huge, for 3+ rabbits (also I let them roam my room obviously.) but no, after puberty the fighting began. I even got bit separating them, due to another prior fight earlier that day… I did not want my piggies to get bit, I’d rather get bit, but it was very very bad, deep. Anyways, the younger pair is bonded, best friends and my other piggy is a loner now in his cage, he stays to himself mostly. I keep them in the same room to allow communication, but they don’t speak up to each other much only to chatter sadly, the younger pair just loves each other though. It sucks.

Thank you so much for making this video. All the points you make in the video is spot on, and I hope that this video inspires people to make a change if they have done any of these mistakes. I have done alot of mistakes too when I got my first two guinea pigs when I was 16. At that age, I was so naive and thought that the pet shop workers actually had to know a lot about the animals they sold and wanted the best for them in order to work there, so unfortunately my two guinea pigs lived in a small pet store cage for maybe 5 or 6 months before I decided to look up guinea pig videos on youtube. And luckily I came across yours, Skinnypig1, Saskia and Little Adventures channel and after that I fixed all of my mistakes and I gave my guinea pigs the best life I could give them until they passed away 3-4 years ago. In 2019 i decided to get guinea pigs again and I now got 3 beautiful black sisters that I named Ester, Lydia and Tabita (names from the Bible) and they will be 2 years old in April. They also had a great talk with me about bedding and they made sure to put a lot of the bedding from their enclosure in the shop into the box so they would feel safer on the way home. all pet shops source their animals from breeding mills, where the animals are bred en masse in usually bad/small conditions, and aren't handled properly. breeding mills like this also don't care about breeding for good characteristics or health. a proper breeder who cares about their animals wouldnt give them to a pet shop to sell.

I've been keeping piggies for years and my piggies have always been my whole life, but unfortunately my piggie right now absolutely Hates other guinea pigs so I just have the one currently. it absolutely breaks my heart because I previously had a trio of girls and I truly believe there is nothing more hilarious that putting food in the cage and watching them all come running at once. My girl right now is absolutely worth it though, she is definitely a grumpy pig, but shes beautiful and has a huge personality. I definitely made some of these mistakes with my first piggies, especially with the sawdust. I'd just been buying whatever I could find, and it wasnt until I had to take one of my girls to the vet for respiratory issues that I realized the sawdust wasn't dust free. problem was solved as soon as I switched to dust extracted!

I’ve watched some videos of your videos, my wife and I adopted a female Guniea Pig from someone who couldn’t keep her anymore. She’s approximately 7 months old, and her previous best friend was a small white dog. We have three Shih-Tzu’s, one who is white, they are both absolutely taken with each other. Long story short we got another female GP, so she could have a friend her species. She DID NOT like the other GP. She chased her around and picked on her. So we give the other GP back. Now she’s seems happier than ever to have her pen to herself and supervised visitations with our white Shih-Tzu. Should we ever try to get her another GP friend? Or as long as she’s happy with being friends with the dog just go with that?

I got my pair of boys as a (kind of) impulse decision. I'd wanted a pet forever, and it suddenly occurred to me one day that I was finally-- FINALLY-- in a position to get pets. So I texted my landlord around noon for permission, got it at two, and quickly decided on a guinea pig as I wasn't keen on rats, hamsters, or gerbils. Very quickly (I think it was the first site I looked at) I learned that I'd have to get two. I watched the pen with the Abyssinians (females were short haired, males were Abyssinians) for awhile. I'd already picked a little ginger with different coloured ears, and I'd thought about a little black one with a white dot on his nose, but was inclined to change my mind as the black one seemed dull. Then the pen got startled-- and ALL the pigs except for the ginger I knew I wanted ran to one corner. The ginger ran over to the little black guinea pig who was on his own in another corner. My gut told me that this meant they were bonded, so I changed my mind back and got the ginger and the black one. And thank goodness I did! I was in a position where I knew I could (and have) become a walking encyclopedia of all things guinea pig on the job. But at the time, I didn't know males could have such trouble bonding. It's been about five months now, and honestly, I'm not even sure who's on charge because these two get along that well. I think it changes. I'm really, really lucky. I adore my boys. ❤ (And the "dull" black guinea pig? Ha! He's named Percival now, and he is the sassiest, bossiest, funniest little guy. I'm so glad Theodore-- the ginger-- told me who he was bonded with. Anyway, the point of this story is to say yes! The first thing I saw when I knew next to nothing was to get two! I'm really grateful for it. ❤) (Also, adoption/rescues for guinea pigs exist! I had no idea. But if you go to a pet store, my advice is watch the cage for a bit! You will be able to see what the relationships are. And if you get males, don't get more than two! 🥰)

My uncle and aunt, got my cousin who's 16, guinea pigs and one of them died because she wasn't caring for them properly. So I decided to take the other little babe in, I work from home so I've got time to fully educate myself on piggies, and their care. I've looked up and down, for rescues and humane shelters that have pigs and nothing 😞 So I have no choice but to get the poor babe a friend from a pet shop. I'm quite nervous about it because I don't want the new piggy to be sick and get the other sick. 😞 Anyways I'm so glad I've found your channel you are amazing!

When you get the new piggy from the pet shop set up a cage for it in a separate room from the current piggy. Keep the new one in the cage for a week or two so then if the new piggy is sick then you can take it to the vet and it won't make the current one sick. It's good that you decided to take the piggy in and do the proper research! You can also look up quarantining a new guinea pig for more info. Just make sure when you get the new piggy that it is the same gender as the current one and that you introduce them properly.

Our guinea-pigs ("mine and my sister's"...in the 1080') loved green grass, and had it the part of the year that that's possible (here in the Stockholm reagion in Sweden). The had hay to eat if they wantad to, but we couldn't really see them having any ( even if they'd ru around in it, step on it, toss it around and so on...so it wasn't that easy to see for certain... Can guinea-pigs eat only fresh grass and bre happy (and haelty) without hay, as long as they have unlimited access to fresh grass??? I have 3 piggies, there cage is 14 foot long 😂 (it takes up basically one whole wall in my room) ramps and its all on one level. My three babies are rescues. I originally rescued the two (ducky and coco) but then I got a phone call from the place I'd rescued the babies from, there mothers cage mate had passed away (she was very old) and the mother was now alone. I took her in because she knew her babys, they all live as a happy pack now 😊 We use medow Hay, and they have vitamin c fortified pellets, as well as fresh veggies, they love brocoli, cellery and cucumber. Is the salt lick dangerous? I put them in at Dr's recommendation. And I will deffo look into fleace bedding, as that seems like a really good idea. And thankfully my 3 babies are all girls. They go to the vet every 4 months for a check up, and sooner if they are showing unusual behaviours. I got a special plan from the vets, that is £20 a month, and it covers all of there treatment. My babies free roam the room with me, and they are held offten too. Thankyou so much for this info, as I've learned a couple of new things, the other thing being I'm now a little more confident, because other than the salt lick I've not made any mistakes. I'm deffo gonna look into fleace bedding tho

Ik not the best decision) and I kept telling my dad "we are gonna get guinea pigs are you excited!!!" and my dad didn't really believe that they needed to be in groups so he asked the person working "so do they have to live in groups?" And the petstore guy was like "nope" and I may have got in a small argument with the worker... but we did end up getting 2 boys and I still have them in a 8sq ft cage and are happy and healthy.

So what I have done for the past 3 years is very bad, and tomorrow I'm fixing something I've been doing. I got my one guinea pig from my step dad's ex-girlfriend and they've been badly neglecting their guinea pigs oh, and they would give them probably two handfuls of Timothy Hay, and they were in those blue cages and they were just left there all day in a broken-down van in their backyard. All they told me what to do Wiz clean his cage once a week and feed him a handful of hay everyday there's this closet kind of thing in my room and I'm thinking of making a DIY cage for him, it's about 52 in by 30 in and I'm just trying to do something for him for once in my life

I'm getting a piggy tomorrow, my friend has two and apparently they've been really aggressive with each other. That's why she's trying to rehome the one. So I'm not sure if getting a second piggy would be a good idea for my guy. Thank you so much for all of this information! I've been trying to research trying to take care of one the last few days. The only thing is, all the cages. I see there are no lids. From my understanding piggies don't really try to escape, which is great. But I have five cats and the cage that I use is a massive thing that I bought for my hamster(I like to spoil my animals, the hamster was pretty much living in the Taj mahal of cages) It's just a big rectangular box with solid plexiglass sides essentially, but it has a lid with ventilation at the top. Is this still okay? Most of my cats are lazy but I just don't want to risk them trying to get in the cage. Is it going to harm the piggy if I put the lid on it?
