I had Titanic spoiled for me when I saw the title.

There is an anecdote about a couple leaving a screening of Titanic and bumping in to friends waiting in the queue. On being asked what he thought of it, the guy observed that the special effects at the end when the ship sank were fantastic. This provoked a response thanking him for having just spoiled the whole film.

Nor is planting the McGuffin or creating a background for plausibility. There are indeed movies that self-spoil, but about half of these aren't them -- they're foreshadowing, lampshading the McGuffin, or Chekhov's Gun. And this is a great idea for a WhatCulture, but it needs to be remade with some stricter attention to definitions!

The operative word is could be, this was an intentional plot device to make you walk out of the theater thinking was it real? Was part of it real, did he just have a psychotic break? Or was it all just the vacation he paid for? You really don't know., which is the whole point.

Pay attention to things while they're setting up the memory package. It's called "blue sky on Mars" and images on the computer depict the Martian reactor. Many things suggesting it could be fake memories but at the same time, it could all be real. One of the best features of the movie is how it keeps you guessing and questioning.

The list isn't about dream or reality. That's not relevant. It belongs on this list because the story is revealed before it is shown. Even twice. First time at Rekall, the second time in the hotel on Mars by the guy from the commercial - "The walls of reality will come crashing down around you. One minute, you're the savior of the rebel cause; next thing you know, you'll be Cohaagen's bosom buddy." Guess what happened next …
