I want to conduct a focus group with therapists of different orientations on the use of silence in psychotherapy. I'm worried the psychoanalysists will mostly carry the discussion, considering their theory gives more attention to silence. How could I make sure this does not happen? Thanks so much for the helpful video!

This is a difficult question, as in the case of any other imbalance - there are Always people who tend to be dominant in the discussion. Even if this is not due to the profession, as it seems to be in your case, more often than not it is simply because of the different personalities. In your context, the only thing that can be done is careful explanation of what you expect to happen in the focus group discussion. Also, since as you said there is a profession where silence is given more attention, I would not say that it will be a problem if they discuss it more - since this will reflect their background. As long as you explain this also in your writing, this should not be a problem, I believe

@@qualitativeresearcher i have to hand in a research project on this. How could I say we will try to do something about it when it occurs?

@@hannekepeeters like I said, just say the participants will be informed beforehand about the procedures. When this happens, you can also gently direct the conversation, but I would be careful with this - I've seen too many FGs where the moderator became an "interviewer" and controlled the whole process, which is not what you want in a focus group discussion

I wanted to do Focus group and individual interviews for my research, but I feel concerned about the level of ethical clearance required vis-avis the obvious advantages of the method.
