We figured there's no point in having a channel about our band unless you're going to get to hear a few bangin' tunes, right? I mean, who's to say we don't suck. Note: We don't.
So, here is the first of many songs we'll be posting as part of this story.
This is Cadmium Red from the All the Villains album, the only album we've released as signed artists, to date. The song appears as the penultimate song on the album but definitely has the feel of a grand closer - it's intentionally epic, although as Woody says in the intro, it's also quite intimate, certainly in terms of the meaning.
Influences are pretty hard to pin down, if you've watched any of the preceding episodes you'll know we draw on inspiration from everything from Shetland folk, to Metallica, via U2, Brazilian Samba and all points in between!
At the time we recorded this Woody was heavily influenced by David Bowie's seminal Heathen album, although that influence is not so prevalent in this particular track.
There's also a little of the Killers from that time, in that it's okay to be big and bombastic and to not shy away from bold sounds, across the board, in the drums, the bass, the vocal harmonies, and of course, the guitar shredding antics in the second part of the song.
Woody says he can never sleep on redeye flights, despite his best efforts so spends a lot of the time staring contemplatively out of the window. This particular song was written after playing some shows on the US East Coast, alongside New York's CMJ Music Marathon.
We were all pretty exhausted and with the future of the band very much uncertain there were tensions amongst us, too.
I guess the song must have started to rise somewhere out near the Grand Banks, many miles from land, outside radio contact, in that vast expanse of ocean that separates the USA and Europe. It's a magical place at a magical time, but almost everyone sleeps restlessly through it until a flight attendant brings them a cup of tea or coffee, so even on a busy flight, it can be a calm, quiet and personal time, a moment for reflection.
We were, as ever, leaving people behind in the USA and looking forward to reuniting with friends and family in London. The balance between leaving and homecoming, that place of transience, as Woody says: ''perhaps one of my favourite places in the world"
The song was recorded at Atomic Studios and Panic Studios, London, with producer Glenn Skinner at the desk, and then mastered by Dick Beetham at 360 Mastering, London.
Released on Futureproof Records, it's available on all streaming platforms, and for the real old-school you can probably even find CD copies out there, somewhere both online and in stores.
Enjoy xxx
LYRICS
Take me home
When all have left and gone
To somewhere overhead
Our love to keep them warm
Cold light starts
With single brilliant stars
We're moving West to East
I guess the dawn comes fast.
Cadmium,
Deep red light.
Guide us away.
Safe home, tonight.
I trust your luck
You know we drunk too much.
Outside, it's crying light.
We tore the night that much.
Cadmium,
Deep red light.
Guide us away.
Safe home, tonight.
