I totally agree with you so much on every single point of this vid. I play guitar for over 20 years now and recently bought my first (cheap, yet effective) 8-string multiscale and I hadn't this much fun in playing the guitar in years. Especially since I've seen all the awesome stuff people (like you) do with it besides djenting around. Not that I don't love the djent, but there's so much more to it than just that. The 8-string actually motivated me to dive deeper into music theory, scales, modes, tapping, sweeping and all this stuff that I missed out on for so long. The 8-string saved me from depression, suicidal thoughts, sleeplessness and gave me the stuff that as I can remember only the Cello gave me. So in my opinion you're 100% right. Thumbs up.

Finally got one of these. Difficult to find around here. It's a hefty beast. Love that I can have a full six strings in standard tuning and still tune the last two to whatever I want. That muscle memory is still more-or-less where it used to be while I play with different intervals :) Funnily enough on the recordings I've done so far I've had a much easier time mixing it than I thought I would. Maybe 'cause I tend to write tracks that have a lot going on, the lower strings stay more easily out of the way of the synth leads and vocals and weird noises. It is playing a lot of the same notes as the bass but that seems to sort itself out without too much extra EQing.

In the grand scheme of things, 1990 is not long for the history of an instrument like the guitar, even less so when you realized that his had to be custom made, and commercially available 7 strings weren't much of a thing until the late 80s or early 90s

I finally got me a 8 string for myself last Christmas 😶. I was going to get a Schecter since I mostly play left handed, but I finally saw a ESP HRF-8B? ( I think I got that right). I love it! It's very comfortable to play and I was surprised just how easy it was to pick up and play. I got it brand new, though sadly it's a b stick. It has this little I guess blemish? Close to the neck pick up, but that seems like a very simple fix if I can just find a luthier near me that can 😄. Not sure what tuning I will set it up in. It's just in standard atm.

The worst part about it is that because the strings are so close together it's hard to use open strings and keep fretted notes ringing, especially lower on the fretboard. I keep accidentally touching the strings that are supposed to be open, and I don't even have big fingers or anything. Of course there are ways to play the same parts differently, but they won't sound or feel the same. Other than that 8 strings are absolutely awesome.

I'd really love an 8 string, but I got a fanned fret 7 and came up with a good compromise.. At first I tuned it to Fripp's New Standard Tuning, with an extra bass string, so it was FCGDAEg, giving more range than an 8 string, but in seven, but I wasn't a fan of how the fifths tuning felt on the high strings, so I split it 50/50 fifths and fourths; FCGDgcf. So I've got 4 strings I can just one-finger drop-D, and three of the fourths are 1, 2 and 3 octaves off from the bass fifths, so you can do some really cool one-finger 3-octave chord strums that I can't even begin to wrap my mind around the theory of why they work, they just do.
