I have a Fujifilm XT-2 and a Nikon D610. I like the results and enjoy the smaller form factor of Fuji, as well as the retro look, feel and utility, and what-you-see-is-what-you-get (thru the viewfinder). My intent was to downsize/minimize with Fujifilm and ditch Nikon. Can't do it - the D610 offers a different physical shooting experience and results that I still very much enjoy - sometimes I just like a larger/more substantial tool in my hands. I like having a full-frame option at the ready, too.

Great video. I use a Canon 5D Mark IV and the feature my images get most benefit from would be the dynamic range. As a Canon user it's interesting to see some of the features of the Nikon - some small touches can make a difference, I like the easy way of covering the viewfinder. Nice images at the end, I liked the one with the sun rays best.

I bought a D500 a couple years ago for shooting sports and wildlife. I definitely want to get a D850 next. But I first need to round out my arsenal of lenses. Right now, I have a Nikon 50mm f/1.8, a Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 and a Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6. My next couple of lenses to get are a wide-angle, a 24-70mm and an 85mm prime. Thank you for sharing your videos. I have recently upgraded to the 850 from the 610. I was so excited but am actually having trouble adjusting. I dont think my pictures seem quite as crisp as my old ones which doesnt make sense. I also seem to be having over exposed pictures often which is not usual for me. Any suggestions on what could be going on?
@jbairdexp

Thank you for watching and congrats on your purchase. In terms of the over exposure, first thing to check is your histogram when you are shooting. If that looks right, but the image comes out over exposed, just double check you haven't switched on exposure compensation, and make sure you've got Active-D lighting switched off. Also, shoot in raw with a flat profile, and see what the image looks like. :-)

Focus Stacking is a great boon for me, if you want to keep the shutter speed up, to reduce foliage movement for instance, but dont want to increase your ISO, I shoot wide open, focus on the foreground and then select focus shift shooting. I will typically use 3,4 or 5 shot bracketing with a Focus Step width of say 4, you need to experiment with that one and press start. It will then move the focus point in each image, with just that one press. It is so easy to shoot wide open and get everything sharp from front to back

@@jbairdexp thank you so much for replying. I jumped from the D7200, so you can understand my enthusiasm for the D850. I don't know if I'll ever go mirrorless. But if I did, it would be the Z system. Also, I don't want to have to invest more money. All my lenses are full frame. I don't believe in getting adapters for lenses, so the option of using my F mount with an adapter is out of the question. In the end, the D850 exceeds all my needs. And I am impressed with the auto focusing, I photograph birds as well. Great video, Julian. I've been loving my D850 for a good five months and no regrets. Fav feature is incredible dynamic range followed by all that resolution which can make it possible to grab a shot under pressure without having to quickly change a lens because there's enough resolution to crop. That resolution also makes it possible to set the camera up perfectly level when vertical lines matter, shoot at a wider angle, then simply crop afterwards without having to try to straighten everything in post-production. Focus Peaking is completely useless because it is not precise and on portraits won´t show the eyes (too little contrast). Better using the magnifying feature in live view. Dynamic range on the D850 is not better than on a D5500 (DX camera). Focus shift feature only works with lenses with build in motor - so it won´t do with Tokina 100mm, Nikon 60mm and Nikon 200mm AF f4 macro lenses. Excuse my bad English. After owning the D850 for 3 months, I´m a little disappointed. I was happier with my D500. Although it is great having 46 MP, the downside is that you have to use shorter shutter which usually means higher ISO. Also the automatic fine tuning feature in the D850 is useless - it is not precise and shows worse results than before applying it. I wouldn´t buy a D850 again, actually thinking that I will sell it and buy a new D500.
@jbairdexp
6 жыл бұрын
Hey, well everyone will put a slightly different value on the various features of the D850. For example the Focus Peaking is accurate enough for my landscape work. At the end of the day though, you got to use a camera that works for you and if it's not the D850 then there is no point in having one. The D500 is an awesome camera :-)

Nothing really to convince me to move from my D810 for landscapes. You mention that it is 42mpix but it is actually 46mpix. The only reason I would think of updating would be the articulating screen - surprised you didn't find that one of the features that had helped?
@jbairdexp
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, thanks for correction. After 40MP, whats a few pixels between photographers! lol The reason I didn't mention the articulated screen is that I've had one for so long (3 years with the D750, plus a few other cameras) that having one of the D850 hasn't really changed things for me. :-)

Thanks Julian - Sorry - I had wrongly assumed you had moved from a D810. I took a long hard look at the D850 but it just is not worth the extra money over my D810 for Landscapes. If I needed video and / or a single camera to cover wildlife and landscapes then I would have got one without hesitation. I would still like the articulating screen though!
@jbairdexp

No worries Dave. If I had a D810 I definately would have to have given it a lot more thought to see if it was worth the upgrade. It was an easier decision coming from a 3 year old D750. The flippy out screen was a significant benifit to me as a landscape photographer when I got it with the D750. It's like a lot of these small features and things they introduce into cameras...you think you don't need them, but when you get them you wondered how you'd do with out them. :-)

Julian, I have a Sony A7R2 which I have only one complaint about. That is, changing lenses in the field always results in dirt, dust and pollen on the sensor. Most of the time the blemished photos can be corrected in post, but it is an aggravation that is best avoided. I purchased the Zeiss primes with the Nikon mount so now I am considering purchasing a D850 for outdoor use. Do the mirror and shutter protect the sensor of the D850 sufficiently that it is possible to change lenses in the field without getting sensor spots?
@jbairdexp
6 жыл бұрын
Hey Mark, I don't think it's ever possible to prevent dust getting onto the sensor when changing lenses, but for me, as a long term DSLR user, I've never really had a problem with dust. I naturally change my lenses outside on a regular basis, but I try to minimise the risk of dust landing on the sensor by making sure the camera is pointing down and I do so while the camera is partially potected by the bag. Obviously dust spots appear over time, but never to any great extent that I get fustrated by the clean up in post. After 6 months of use with the D850, I've only had to clean one or two spots from some photos. I normally aim to have the sensor professionally cleaned once a year. Hope this helps.

I also have an Olympus E-M1 MKII and I use loads of the features you mentioned like touch screen and focus peaking etc Did you notice a great difference to the D750, I know you said the dynamic range which is a great help but are there enough to make it a need. Thanks Billy, and I really appreciate you subscribing :-) Great to hear you've found the video useful. I'm not sure if the change in dynamic range was "great"...it was definately noticable though. I found there was a lot more data in the shadows so recovery seemed to be easier....but is the difference big enough to justify the upgrade? Well, that's hard to say. Just dynamic range...well, maye, but as a whole package, for me at least, the D850 was worth upgrading from the D750. Not sure if that was any help? lol

The 24-120 is a great all round lens, but the f/54 aperture might be limiting. All depends on what and where you shooting though.

Autofocus will likely be another stand out feature that you will notice a difference in. Getting a good image straight out the camera will be easier due to many of the features such as the auto-focus and dynamic range.
