anyone else make mistakes while in the process of becoming debt free?

We made all the same mistake, You guys did. But we grow and learn. Still in journey 40k debt, 80k income. paid off in 1.5 years if pay off the car..Just 4k left.... have a 4k car loan left. Got 8k saved for my 3 month e-money. Still employed, but worried of this currents situation. Should i just pay it off and save back to emergency fast as i can?
@MikeandBrit
4 жыл бұрын
If I were in your shoes (not financial advice) and there was a significant chance of getting laid off or having something happen that would decrease my income, I would hold off on paying more than the minimum payments on everything until things got back to normal. That being said, if you guys can live on your significant other's income, paying things off and then saving your emergency fund back up could work. Brittany and I are solely living off of her income right now. Mine is pretty much zero with everything going on. If we were still on baby step 2, that would probably be put on hold until my income went up again, or until we had more money in our emergency fund than necessary and we could very comfortably pay down our debt.

The only mistake I would say for us, was during the first few months of budgeting, we forgot many categories for our cash envelopes, such as entertainment, haircuts, birthday gifts, misc, or sinking funds like annual life insurance and car tags. But after six years of budgeting, we ave it nailed down 😉

My old boss taught me how to manage money years ago with 2 sentences. "Always act like you're poor. Then when you really need money in an emergency you have it." Those 2 sentences changed my life. Saving money is a life-long habit. Even when it comes down to buying a can of name brand beans for .99 or a store brand for .69 When you live life always looking for a better price, the money manages itself.

Thank you for sharing! I personally bought the "beeter" $2.5K car. Here's what happened: yes I saved money on the purchase price, 2002 Toyota - good car actually. problem was, 200K miles and it needed over 2,500 of work done in the first 2 years of owning it. I had to rebuild the engine, install spark plugs, valve covers, replace brake lines, double control arm replacement, and MORE! I even had it checked by a AAA mechanic the day I bought it, and all. Was told good engine, but has normal wear and tear for a car that old. I have owned the car for just over 3 years and my total all-in cost on the car is ~5,500 PLUS another 1-2K in lost opportunity cost from the time I lost unable to use it for commuting to work. I was forced to rent a car, a cheap one, for a weak and even that alone was another $500. I think the Acura was probably a very very wise choice. True wealth-builders are less "Upfront cost" sensitive when we know that the item will last good at low cost, like your TL. I think that was the perfect move tbh. I am looking now to upgrade to a car ~$10,000. Go figure!

I don’t know. If you go down to low on the car your likely to start running into problems with repairs and stuff like that. I’m not saying you can’t find a decent car for 3000 but it’s gonna have way more miles and be an older car that might not be as reliable. I’d rather have piece of mind that my ride is gonna make it to work each day without a hassle or added cost. It’s not to say that couldn’t happen in a 10,000 dollar car but you can get a way better car for that kinda money.

Yesss on budgeting fun money... I own a small farm, so between horses, goats, chickens, cats, and training dogs I've got plenty to do, and would be completely fine with never leaving the homestead. My boyfriend is very supportive about the farming life, but he gets stir crazy and very irritable if we don't go doooo something every once in a while. So 3 months in we decided on a small fun budget, and it's his job to manage that. I bring in the most income and also own all the debt, so I manage the bulk of the budget, and he's happy to do his part with the fun money. It has helped tremendously!

Folks don't realize how important writing down all your bills can impact everything. Budget will only come after you write down all your bills. This open up and show where your money is going, how much you're giving away, how much you can save and the goal to debt free. A budget won't happen until you write down all your bills.

This may relay more to another post (2 regrets) the lull and limbo after purchasing your house. Your house is beautiful and a great achievement. I too remember that feeling. Of limbo and finally having a house but also the great weight of it too. To get over it my husband and I made a list of projects, wishes and goals. This meant that we could save for holidays, future children, garden and house purchases and go out. We relaxed for a while at different stages and made sure we did things we enjoyed. As children arrived we had to adjust again and again and reset goals. We managed to pay off the house in under ten years. Just remember you can have what ever you want you just have to choose and focus. All the best.

We write our shopping list on the fridge door with a whiteboard marker (wipe-clean surface). It means we can each just add to the list when something crops up and then take a photo of it before a shop. It means there's pretty much always a list which makes it easy to just "pick up a few things" when it's convenient without inadvertently buying a basket of crap that sees you thru till the next "proper" shop. We can also send the list really easily to each other with a photo. Write on, wipe off, really easy.

As we left, it pulled the bumper half off. I got it good enough to get home and it was the middle of a bad rainstorm. On the way home, 5 minutes later, I did what 15 other people around me had done and hit a massive pothole. Bent the wheel. It was so discouraging. But, I got the bumper back on with zip ties and found a new wheel in a junkyard and the tire was still good. Now, hopefully in June, we will be debt free.

Thanks so much for watching! Our recommendation would be to speak with a financial professional. Each person's situation is unique to them. That being said (not financial advice), assuming nothing else were playing into the situation, if we were your age and strictly focusing on the math, we'd keep our money in our 401k and pay off the house with extra cash flow. The 401k would probably be earning more than the house is costing in interest, and we're pretty sure there's a hefty tax penalty for pulling money from a 401k early.

Depends. How much do you owe on your mortgage? Look at your statement and look at “how much you’re paying in interest and how much is going directly to the “principle “? There actually is a tipping point in your mortgage amortization schedule where instead of paying an exorbitant amount of “interest “, you’re then actually paying primarily your “principle”. IF you are at that point (which is “the home stretch”;of your loan) then let that ride... if you are at a point in your mortgage where every month you’re paying $300, $400, $500 or more a month (which equals $3600, $4800 and $6000 per YEAR respectively.... now look at your 401k and if you take out 30,000 (you will get taxed 10% which only equals 3,000) And if you pay down the mortgage which you might have $100,000 left on down to 70,000, it will most likely reduce your interest that you are paying per month and per year on that loan which actually will improve your numbers

Hubby is not giving her a chance to practice in front of the camera, he talks too much and is making her look bad. Dude, it's not just your channel.

Could also be that we were in between takes and there was some confusion about who was going to talk. Usually we fumble over our words quite a bit and have to say things more than once. Sometimes we change our mind on who's saying what when that happens

I agree, no offense but you do that in all your videos. You need to let her talk a bit more. I don't see the point of her being next to you when she only gets to say two words in a 17+mins video. Even though she seems uncomfortable talking but give her a chance to practice. Just food for thought.
