I went to a rabbit show for the first time ever a couple days ago with my mom and cousin. I would say it was somewhat fun, but I was pretty disturbed with the way they treated those rabbits. First of all, their nails were EXTREMELY long and sharp. I saw people grooming their rabbits, but I never saw them clipping their nails. I got a pretty bad scratch (it drew blood) on my hand from one of the rabbits, which wouldn't have happened if they had kept its nails trimmed. Every time we asked someone if we could hold their rabbit, they picked up the rabbit by its scruff, which also concerned me. I don't even want to talk about the living situations those rabbits were in! My mom told me that those owners didn't actually care about their rabbits' well-being, they just cared about competition. I've thought about entering my rabbit in a show before, but that experience changed my mind completely.

I always love how you continue to keep educating people for our long eared friends. I had the issue with Morty of sore hocks it is such a process it can come up fast! And I feel so bad for my little man he needs constant hugs and cuddles he is glued to me! Won’t let me go anywhere when he got it. At first I thought bedding ditched it for recycled dust free, all is well he is back to his usual self he like to jump on his cage ledge and he poops through the bars to make a neat pile of cannon balls and the other side is for pee he is super neat about his cage keeps waste to one small part of it the rest is for lounging his cage is stupid huge and he always has an open door to leave as he wants. So I figured he would never get the sore hocks again because he is always welcome to any part of the house and he does stairs no problem to the second floor he likes to be under my bed or my son’s bed. He is just getting over it again for his second time. Although his cage is the largest I have seen for any animal and the size I have is super rare the ledge he like to be on to poop and pee is the culprit and hurting his foot. Now I will have to make a new enclosure I know you don’t like the cage but Morty likes his and chooses to be in it as he knows it is his private leave me alone space, a safe space that all of us respect when it comes to him. He is the star of our troop the apple of our eyes! We have this relationship because of the tips you have helped me with personally when it comes to rabbits there is a finesse to it. The lack of paw pads is the very reason rabbits can tolerate wire flooring, rather than walking on flesh they walk on very think fur that protects there feet. The wire needs to be the right type though, large 14-16 gage 1 by 1/2 inch. Hardware cloth seems kinda bc the gaps are smaller but in actuality the small gage is sharper and can scuff off the thick layer of fur once that happens then you get sore hocks. Some rabbits are also genetically predisposition to have thinner fur on there feet making them prone to sore hocks no matter how soft their flooring is. There is no more sanitary way or eco friendly way to keep a caged rabbit than on wire. Just make sure it’s the proper type and that your rabbit came from good breeding.

I would like to say something Abt #1, while there are some stereotypes of "scruffing your bunny" the main reason it's bad is bc most ppl use the power inappropriately. A rabbit who is more than 3-4lbs shouldn't be scruffed at all period but a rabbit of the appropriate weight will experience no pain while doing so. yes it is uncomfortable just the same as it is uncomfortable to muzzle a dog but it is not painful to a rabbit of the appropriate weight. Alot of people like to argue with this that they don't have scruffs like canines which is true but a canines scruff is just extra skin, the same thing a rabbit has just more. Also if you have a larger rabbit who is bitey or needs a swift move from one spot to another, scruffing and then placing a hand under the bum holds them upright so they cannot nip while also ensuring thier weight is in your hand and not on their neck. The main stereotypes of scruffing came after it was merged with the idea of picking up by the ears. While you should NEVER pick you're bunny up by the ears "scruffing" is okay as long as it is used appropriately

I really need feedback on this please! So, my parents agreed to a bunny a while ago. But, I came up with the idea of free roaming in my bedroom, but putting a home base under my bed. Now, my bed is gigantic in height terms. And in width it is a full size. I said I could put foam matts/specifically foam letter matts under my bed, and cage in the undersize with an ex pen. I could figure it out with the litter box (I'm planning to use a cat litterbox) And I've got everything worked out that deals with future rabbits health. Ex pen will stay open as long as I am not leaving the house. And I will make sure to keep a good diet, and give it plenty of attention and exersise. I'm going to be moving into my own place in a couple of years (I'm 17 right now) once I'm out of highschool, and my parents want me to stay home for college as well. Is this an okay idea? They want to get a bunny from a shelter about an hour away from my house for Christmas. I really trust your judgment so I really hope you're able to see this!

I once accidentally had a bad nail trim with my Sophie. The quick was involved. She cleaned herself up better than I did! As I tell people, they’re self cleaning like an oven or cat, but without the gross coughed up hairballs. 🙂 Sophie does not like to be picked up, but once she is, she is a little cuddle bun who does not leave my side. Lulu on the other hand goes absolutely crazy when on a lap. Nail trims are a challenge and once in awhile I have had to resort to trancing to get a long overdue one in. I’ve been working to calm him since I adopted him, so 5.5 years now. He loves to come to me for attention and I pet him on his terms. He’ll jump on my back, but brushing and nail trims are a battle. We all learn to be better though. I remember your Lennon video of treating her like a baby. It seems like you’ve stepped away from that type of video too which is awesome. I had a rabbit that would have lived the rest of her life in a cage. Typically, I would say I'm a dog guy. Rabbits are so subtle in comparison. If I was awake and at home, the cage was open for her to run around. I noticed that she always was in a place where she could see me. When I'd cook, I'd always give her the leaves from the celery or the rest of a bunch or parsley. She loved parsley. Towards the end of her life, she got head tilt a lot. I swore I wouldn't get attached but I did. The saddest thing was chopping up some celery and bringing her the leaves and realizing she was gone.

I have a totally loveable bunny. He loves cuddles and pretty laid-back concerning touch or petting. I can pet him at feeding time and pretty much all day except sleeping time. From day one he immediately got very comfortable and displayed his superman moves. Those that mistreat a bunny shouldn't have one nor ANY pet for that matter.

Lorelei, your rabbit animal husbandry is second to none. I follow several other rabbits on KZitem. There's one channel in particular that has used treats to arouse the bunny's interest, but then delays the reward. It's obvious that the rabbit feels frustrated and thwarted. Do you ever reach out to content providers to try to educate them? I want to say something, but I don't have the creds (I don't have a rabbit). How do you approach rabbit keepers who are unintentionally making their pet into a neurotic mess?

I agree that bathing your rabbit is something that you shouldn't do. However, just last week my bunny somehow jumped on a shelf and squirted lotion all over his behind. I didn't want to bathe him, but I had to. I just filled a container up just enough to where it would soak just his behind and legs and not his full body.

Our bunny liked her temp pen and then her new pen that was a lot bigger and she refers to be in there than out of it. maybe because our home is new so she feels safe in an enclosed area and she likes her digging box and uses it as her bed and used it as her litterbox. We also have a dog but she stays on the main floor and goes in the basement and our daughter's room is bunny space.

I know everyone says a rabbit needs a rabbit companion, but...this is what happens! With prarie dogs, they say get one, make a pet of him, then get him a friend. If there are always two+ it's hard to bond with them. If it's just you and the rabbit they adapt to you. If there are other rabbit friends he/she will not meet you halfway

Same here 😢 2 years for us. I just deal with it but it’s like I have so much love and cuddles to give my solo boy bun! I’d never hurt him and I think he knows that? But he’s still skittish and takes a few min to warm up, if I lay in the floor he’s fine with pets but he won’t jump up on sofa or let me carry him around. I’m SO thankful for this channel really teaching me about bunny behavior and remind myself all the time, he’s a prey animal 🐰 so my feelings don’t get dashed lol. @@lazyhomebody1356 I adopted a young adult bonded pair over 4 years ago, after having only one rabbit (that I got before he was full-grown) when I was a kid. The single rabbit was much friendlier and more affectionate than the pair, which I had not realized would be the case. When you think about it, though, who needs petting from a human when there's a rabbit who will lick your ears and face all the time? The only part of me they lick is my hands when there is food residue on them, whereas the single one licked my nose (and only MY nose) like mad. Looked at another way, though, it's better to have two so they don't get lonely and naughty if I'm away all day.

I once read a book that said that before people started holding their bunnies by the scruff, (This was a book I bought in the early to mid 90's, so yes, it's quite outdated by now.) magicians would grab the rabbits out of their hats by the ears, so they would wiggle around and show the bunny was real. :< This one probably goes without saying with anything that has ears, but please don't grab your bunnies by the ears. :(

While I generally agreed with a lot of your points. I believe that as long as you keep a close eye on the rabbit and following the proper steps, introducing them to predators isn't bad. Plus, some predators are more, gentle than others. I believe if I plopped my bunny next to my cat, the worst thing my cat would do is slap it in the head a few times. I never really understood my cat, but she probably never hunted in her dreams. Better safe than sorry but still that cat was pretty much harmless to everything.

Not feed it carrots ALL THE TIME. It can be harmful for health reasons and might lead to obesity. We should give them lettuce or smth grassy. We might have though that it is OK because we see it in cartoons but that's not quite the thing. We should also give them small amounts of fruit and healthy stuff they eat.

What other things to not do iny personal opinion because I have one as well is Don't make your bunny sniff everything you do and one other thing keep them away from the dirt that appears as sand throughout grass fields because there's a bunch of unnecessary things crawling plus to top it off no objects that are not bunny chewy safe. just a question, can rabbits live in hutches? Not like those little small ones, but a spacious and big one. My rabbit (rescued) will be living in one soon and i want to make sure it is okay. I am getting a big hutch and it is only for when the bunny needs to sleep, rest, or take a break. My bunny will be free roam for most of the day, and will not be kept in the hutch for long periods of time. here is the story of my rabbit if anyone wants to read. ⬇️ my mother rescued a bunny off of the side of the road yesterday. The road was next to the park, a typical place for people to ‘abandon’ bunnies. People are so careless that they dump these fellas into the wild.. thinking that they know what to do.The bunny was very friendly and easy to catch. Many people struggle to catch domestic rabbits but this one was super duper friendly and social. The rabbit was a holland lop and weighed about 4 pounds and was a decent size so i think it is an adult rabbit. No idea if spayed or neutered, and i don’t know the gender. they stay in a bin (temporarily bc i have no pen yet.)! Your vids helped me find out how to care for my new little companion! I will bring them to a vet soon to find more info abt this fella. (Name is snowball if anybody wants to know.)

depends on how big the hutch is, really. Do you have any measurments? Plus: you can't cage a rabbit when they "need to sleep" since they don't sleep for a long time. They only sleep for a few minutes and wake again.

Yeah my concern too^ From my personal experience rabbits wont sleep the entire night and might be more active at nighttime than daytime so having them caged then might hinder them from getting out their energy But if you have an enclosed and predator safe outside area around the hutch maybe he could stay there?? Also just wanna say, really appreciate what u do! Ty for helping the little fella, im sure you guys will become good friends^^ Goodluck!

No hutch is big enough sadly! Hutches don’t keep them cold in the summer and warm in the winter! I do think rabbits can live outside but there’re lots of conditions. First of all no predator should be able to go near the bunny’s and you may think it’s all predator proof but they will dig stick there claws trough the bars and try evrything to get to the bunny’s. Tbh the bunny’s shouldn’t even be able to see predator my Benny died by just seeing one so yes that can happen sadly. They should have a large indoor space like a shed. They need to be vaccinated because there are lots of chances you’re bunny can get sick, indoor bunny’s should be vaccinated to. Sorry if I misunderstood but I think you ment outdoors right? And if no then it’s just better to get a pen!

Thank you Lorelei for all your content and information! ❤ I would like to recommend if you could please do a video on bonding bunnies. 🙏 I have 2 neutered male bunnies, who are brothers. When I got them, they were babies and they were already bonded. I started researching them and found you right away, and continued to binge watch you. I've learned so much and it changed the way I raise them. You saved them from the outdoor hutch, I got them neutered, and I treat them better, all because of you. 🐇🐇💝 Thank you! But, like clockwork, as they came of age they began to fight just like you say & I separated them right away and got them neutered. They have been separated for 8 weeks total (1 week before neutering & 7 weeks after neutering), and I'm ready to start rebonding them now. But there is so little information on bonding, and it's contradictory. Can you please do a video on bonding neutered male rabbits. I saw one from 101 Rabbits called How to Bond Rabbits. I'd be curious what you think of it. She's stress bonding which I feel like you'd possibly disagree with. Other articles say start with a large space vs she says start with a small space & work your way up. A video like this would be invaluable for me, and others like me, especially considering how much I respect your knowledge. Thank you Lorelei! Have a Wonderful day! ❤

Mine was in a cage but also got free roam around my bedroom and even around the house. Got along well with my cats and dogs. She was an angora. She sadly had something genetic wrong or bad luck and died young. She would jump onto my bed and scratch at my blankets next to me until gave her pets and scratches. Often would rest in my window sill with my cats as well. She was super affectionate and social when she had her free roam time! Even would run down the hall and hop onto my mom's bed to visit her for loves. She taught me they're pretty cool pets!

I keep meat rabbits for less than a year and I can assure everyone, not all of them are alike. I tried the famous "Internet" for clues and recommendations, most of the real know-hows of rabbit keeping are NOT there. :DDD Even picking them up seemed to be a problem, cause they were not like in these videos where you can just pick up a catatonic half kilogram rabbit fluff with a smile.... Picking them up by hugging, supporting, grabbing them is out of options too. Yeah, if we talk about a rabbit that spends it's days in a cage, OK! They will probably be scared sh*tless and won't do nothing. I started out by building the rabbits that I was given bigger pens, so they can actually RUN and JUMP...so that's what they did, their legs got waaaay stronger. The buck that spent 1,5 year in a cage got stronger in just 2 months. We could NOT hold him, so we did not force it.... we just spent time with him on daily basis, and we did not leave him until he got back into his pen. Now he is exercising free for 6 hours a day outside. They trade places with his son, the young buck is out excercising from the morning, and his father in the afternoon. They know when they must go in and when there is time for dinner etc. We never disturb them when they eat cause they eat ALL THE TIME... when they want. Not when they "beg for it" or "behave well" like the video says :DD They cannot be put into "trance", hell I barely manage to lay them on their side when they are exhausted from playing.... they do whatever the hell they want. :D Forcing cuddles are out of question... I tried once, got fangs to my face and arms. So yeah people tend to forget that these are wild animals, but they also forget that they are intelligent and very social. If someone does not acknowledge these 2 facts, they should not keep a rabbit. If they do, well they can learn the rest from experience. :) A really good thing the video mentions is WIRE FLOORING. This is the only video on the internet that I have seen mentioning it. I dunno how every, literally every breeder thinks it's OK just cause it's easy... they don't even provide natural mulch, cause it's easier that way. So yeah, thanks for pointing out that it'S not cool. :) Should be the first point, cause it's rare that someone mentions it... Cool video all in all. Lots of info, good presentation. Just don't forget that all bunnies have different personalities, big or small. A healthy one will let you know what it wants. A sick one (even mentally) will be really obidient and still.
