Love the German halftracks. The 8 ton was really more of an artillery tractor, being unarmored. Only downsides compared to American M2 was the front wheels were un powered and interleaved wheels would get packed with mud . My brother had a 1941 M2 White halftrack that we drove around and it could go over small trees going uphill. Lots of fun! And gas😂

1)it's awesome; 2)it being awesome doesn't change the fact that germans turned the whole idea of halftracks on its head😅 Context: halftracks are made because at the time they were simpler, cheaper and more reliable then full wheel drive AND fully tracked vehicles. Germans decided to make heavy halftracks with interleaved roadwheels to make them as complicated, expensive and unreliable as competitors. That's the joke. Kniepkamp loved his interleaved roadwheels to lower the strain on rubber bandages as all rubber was imported. But it's still funny.
@wolf310ii

Replacing the rear wheels of a truck with tracks doesnt make it cheaper nor less complicated
@TheArklyte
@@wolf310ii it makes it cheaper then designing all wheel drive offroad truck OR then designing fully tracked vehicles. That's why Kettenkrad exists for example. De facto it's an ATV. Retaining the turn wheels allows halftracks to have simpler transmission then the one that would be needed for turning on fully tracked vehicles. Having long track instead of second pair of wheels allows it to spread weight and force over more area and thus avoid having complicated gearbox of all wheel drive. Do you have a sense of deja vu when reading the last sentence? 🤣
@wolf310ii
@@TheArklyte You have no clue about halftracks or mechanic in general, do you? The US halftracks WERE all wheel drive, with the back wheels replaced with tracks. Tracks have a lot more parts than wheels, wich makes it more complicated and more expensive. The German Halftracks had complicated gearboxes like fully tracked vehicles and are more complicated than fully tracked vehicles too, because the frontwheel steering had to be combinated and syncronised with the track steering. The only reason for the German 3/4 halftracks having front wheels instead of being fully tracked, was the smoother steering on the road, in heavy terrain the front wheels became pretty much useless, especialty on the Kettenkrad.

It seems to be at the World War Museum in Overloon in the Netherlands. There is an Event every year that called Militracks, where you can visit the Museum and drive as a passenger with different WW2 Vehicles such as the 8-ton and many others. The next Militracks Event is from 25.05-26.05.24
