Few things on buying trekking gear cheaper: Renting may not always be possible, and at many places (such as Sankri) the rent for trek gear at local shops is close to their cost and also poor in quality/dirty. In such cases buying is the only option. On place to buy them cheap is pvt military goods shops. Every big city/town have a cantonment area, and generally in nearby you'll have a market having many military goods shop catering to personal needs of soldiers living nearby. For eg: Gopinath Bazaar in Delhi Cant., Topkhana Bazaar in Lucknow Cant., Pathankot, etc. At these shops you can find thing such as Trek pants, shoes, boots, rucksacks, Dry fit tshirts, gloves, warm socks, etc, of good quality and much cheaper prices. Just that colours options are limited to mostly black, green, brown.

Such a valuable tip! Thank you! As for renting gear, there are several online stores you can rent from. We have our own store, then there are stores like Sharepal. They are very affordable.

@@Indiahikes Thanks for telling about Sharepal, but unfortunately its not available in my city. Have rented from you on your treks, experience was good just that one needs to book early, sometimes its gets stocked out

Train >> Aeroplane. 1) If in group train rides are fun 2) Save money (~66% in AC and more in Non-AC option) 3) Slowly get used to the cold weather in the northern region as you travel. Disadvantage: 1) Save a Day 2) less fatigue as you reach quickly

Sometimes planes are better. I'm from Chennai and there is no direct train from Chennai to Dehradun. Chennai to Delhi on a fast train 3AC costs 4k. It takes 29 hrs. But Chennai to Delhi costs 7k which is 4 hrs. And I'll take an overnight train or bus to Dehradun. I'll get a whole day in Dehradun which I can use to explore other places to get my money's worth 😁

@@vickyashok9839 yup makes sense for that much distance.... Max 12 hrs of overnight journey - trains are better, else plane!

Rent equipments! Trek poles, bags that one can be okay to sanitise & share .. or borrow from fellow trekkers who have different dates of travel.... Or thrift them.

Amen to that. So many ppl spend over 20,000 on just trekking gear, which is not required. Renting (and even better, borrowing from your friends and family) is the best way to go.

It is better to purchase your trekking shoe before the trek or take it on rent?
@Indiahikes

Definitely better to rent. Especially if you're trekking for the first time. If you make it a regular habit, then it makes sense to buy.

How does incognito mode help?
@sivachandra34

So that the cookies stored on your computer don't give information to the websites so that they can't Jack up the prices based on your search history
@Indiahikes

Exactly what Siva said. Most websites store your search history and increase the prices the next time you make the same search. When you're incognito, they cannot store the cookies, so the prices will remain un-increased even the next time.
