An upgrade to improve safety, and possibly allow some higher speed service using existing equipment, would be to have the road cross under the tracks below grade level. How many accidents every year, deaths and injury and damage to property could be prevented? Would allow consistently higher speeds for passenger trains. Probably won't happen here because of investment required by federal government. Florida has a problem with a high water table in coastal areas.

Other than the Lake Shore Limited which can be a fairly long train needing two units most double headed runs with only a few cars are just for loco positioning or mechanical issues with one unit. @FFred-us9tw
3 жыл бұрын
Al summed it up well. But to add, while many of the shorter long distance trains could technically be pulled by one locomotive, it’s never a good idea for safety and reliability reasons. If that one Loco breaks down you now have passengers stranded and potentially with no power. But using at least two locomotives you add redundancy for keeping the train moving and keeping power available for HVAC and lighting. On the corridor it’s not really an issue since their is a very high frequency of passenger trains. A train that breaks down can be easily and quickly rescued by another train. But the long distance trains typically operate on foreign railroads with minimal, if any other passenger trains. So a breakdown could be hours before a freight locomotive showed up and they would have no ability to provide power to the coaches. That could be disastrous for passengers in hot or cold weather.

FYI, diesel trains aren’t necessarily “old”. Plus, they’re not strictly diesel, they’re diesel-electric, meaning that the locomotive is actually an electric locomotive with a built-in diesel generator. That’s much more efficient than direct diesel, which hasn’t been used in ages. There’s nothing stopping one from designing a high-speed train using diesel-electric, since the drivetrain is electric either way. (Europe has diesel-electric routes, too, by the way.)

Even if he's standing a safe distance from the tracks, the railroads don't like that. Legal liability and all that. Best to stay on the public road surface asphalt or sidewalk, and behind the crossing gates, and make sure you get a clear shot of yourself standing on public property at least once during the take so you can prove that you weren't trespassing. That way the railroad can't say anything to you. Use a telephoto lens to get those shots of the trains coming down the tracks from a distance instead of walking down the tracks. Nobody in large numbers are willing to pay for that on a continental scale for a 19th century transportation system based on 18th century prototype ideas. Canada, US, Mexico, and the smaller Central American nations all have a majority of grade crossings. We developed a system in the 1940s and 50s that made all grade crossings disappear for continental mass transit. It was called airliners and interstate/interprovince limited access highways. Like it or not 99% of travellers use those systems and 1% ride the rails in upper NA. Even with coast to coast elevated rail at 300mph, that ratio is unlikely to change.

Isn't it great that America has High Speed Rail once again something we had figured out in the 1930's & 40's the C&NW and the Milwaukee Road both competed for passenger traffic on the 85 mile Chicago to Milwaukee Route. They had an Agreement they would both schedule a 90 minute trip. When C&NW bought 4 Brand New E-7's for exclusive use on that route The MILW viewed that as a violation to their agreement they already had assigned to that Route their Alco built Hiawatha Streamlined Hudsons and cut the running time to 67 and a half minutes. You do the Math on that one and yes there were Station stops in between. There is a well known picture of a sign taken on a curve in Northern IL stating reduce speed to 90. Other Interesting ancient history High Speed Rail Facts. 1) PRR Electric GG-1's pulling 10 Heavyweight Coaches could accelerate from 0-100 in 1 minute 2) PRR's Abused and unwanted Duplex T1 4-4-4-4's were occasionally pushed by crews across flat and straight OH and IN up to 130-140 MPH to make up time on a late running train. they were all scrapped within 8-10 years 3) The CB&Q's Magnificent 4-84's could make up time on a running late passenger train at well over 100 MPH 4) The Santa Fe's Giant 4-8-4's routinely were pushed to 100 MPH going across the Desert 5) Don't believe me? I have a Book that has a picture of a UP 4-8-4 going across an unprotected crossing at 100 MPH somewhere in WY. So we were doing that 80 years ago what is the big deal we never should have lost it.

We invented a higher speed train called an Airplane and short trips of under 200 miles were faster by car after good roads were built than any train could achieve even at 100 to 200mph when you take into account the total travel time of getting to the station, parking, ticketing, loading, speeding past your actual destination, unloading, renting a car, driving to your destination. Railroad companies killed their own passenger service by choice... Then dumped the aging equipment on Amtrak as a government salvage buyer. They made money on mail and fast perishable freight packages before 1965. Passengers were just a bonus, that nowhere near paid for the train infrastructure.
@guntrain212
3 жыл бұрын
@@STho205 That's not presently the case. Amtrak wasn't formed until 1971. The Northeast Corridor is profitable. Empire corridor is also generally net profit or very close to net profit, on passenger revenue alone.

Well sounds familiar Amtrack similar to its almost forgotten sister in the Philippines the former MRR (Manila Railroad ) a company founded during the American colonial past now named PNR ( PHILIPPINE NATIONAL RAILWAYS) The only difference now was the railtracks Amtrak rails were properly laid and stone ballast keep train rides so smooth the PNR rail system still predates during the American colonial time. Still waiting for an upgrade. Anyway new trains units ordered from Indonesia arrived recently but I believed without upgrading the tracks metal fatigued will run down the new trains . More power to Amtrak for keeping the American rail system alive .

For all the people who are doubting this is 110MPH.... Nothing ever looks as fast on video as it does in person. And the larger the object, the slower it looks. There are cab ride videos here on KZitem in a P42 going 110MPH where you can see the speedometer. There are video's of Acela's passing stations with radar guns showing the speed. And yet they never look as fast as the actual speed is. The line in this video and the equipment shown is all rated for 110MPH. So it absolutely could be traveling 110MPH. But since trains sometimes are going slower than MAS (Max Authorized Speed) just because you film in a location where the speed is (for example) 150MPH is not a guarantee that every train that passes will be going that fast. But the simplest way to prove this phenomenon about the larger the object, the slower it looks on video, go search on KZitem "A380 taking off". The A380 is the largest commercial aircraft flying today. It's MASSIVE. And in order to take off it MUST reach 195MPH on the runway. It HAS to. Unlike an Acela which may only be going 100MPH through a 150MPH section, aircraft can't just one day ignore physics and magically take off at a slower speed than the aircraft is designed to. So if you watch an A380 leave the runway you are seeing an object travelling at 195MPH. I have seen them take off in plenty of video's and in person as well (At Newark Airport). The video's make it look slow.
